It is all about showmanship to his avid base who has no idea what's going on. As per this CNN article, they might not be doing much of anything on the border:

CNN, April 6, 2018: Trump's border troops may not have much to do

The National Guard are not the same as regular army troops. They have civilian day jobs, and don't know much about building roads or bridges, unless it means driving a grader down a road washed out from rains. What rains? Ha.

They certainly do not have the authority to engage in military actions. So maybe they'll sit around and play cards.

From the CN article, "President Trump continues to use every cynical political trick in the book to ignite anti-immigrant fervor," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. "His needless militarization of the border is motivated purely by political calculation, not our national security."

I guess people here forget the "main" point: the president never should have such authority without the consent of the governing elected people. Like I said in many of my threads, the president here has way too much "power" and "authority" compared to other civilized countries, which is asking for "dictatorship". Again an self inflicted wound.

Yes, Trump did sent 4000 plus National Guard troops to the border right now and they are supposed to stay there until the "wall" is finished; cost nothing I guess. How crazy can you get just to please his "stupid" base. But yeah, as long as we want an "dictator" then that is what you get, if you don't have proper laws and proper limits on Presidential authority.

It's a good thing none of the troops will be armed, because that would create another set of problems for CBP agents who prowl around in the dark.

I would rather see them assisting local police stopping crime and violence. If they are going to be used.

Another "waste" of taxpayer money for nothing; which could have helped the poor or a better healthcare program. Wasting money is this governments priority. Trump's "trips" costing already over 200 million, for "nothing".

That's exactly what some guests said on Washington Week, I watched bits and pieces of today. Some guests even went as far to say that trump is still operating a reality show, and that he is still in campaign mode, which I believe too.

I think this is far more about pandering to his base than anything else. The military and/or the National Guard don't have the legal authority to detain anyone crossing the border illegally. That falls squarely in the purview of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

So basically the National Guard or military would be forced to twiddle their thumbs while sitting in their lawn chairs as people cross our border and walk right past them. And if no Border Control agents are nearby then there's a decent possibility the people who cross wouldn't get picked up.

Sending military to our border is a colossal waste of taxpayer funds, but Donald's base loves it so to hell with worrying about wasting billions of dollars.

I believe that's true Jared, I came away with a different point of view after watching journalists on Washington Week on my local PBS channel. They said that Trump was doing something to get his base riled up again. Just the same when he tweeted DACA was a dead deal, he was seeking attention for his base of fools.

Again Jared, as I said an President here has way too much power; compare such with other Prime Ministers in Europe.

It never should be possible that a President can order troops to do something without the consent of the governing body; neither impose "tariffs" on its own. When is this country ever going to learn not to rely on 1800's made laws? Yes an real "banana republic"; every day proves this again.
