I'm cautiously optimistic, but suspicious. What does NK have to gain by offering up denuclearization for what? Nothing?? I don't get it.

Is it possible T's demoralizing tweets and rants towards Un really may have worked? Hate to think so, but maybe like attracts like...

    Weird.

The South Korean security guy gave effusive praise to Trump, not because he deserved it (he didn't), but rather because they wanted Trump to meet Kim Jung Un on "equal terms". Unless you indulge in adulation of Trump, you are not going to get him to sit down with the North Korean leader.

Trump as usual will look at this opportunity as "what's in it for me."

And we can easily see that they offered trump a number things of honor to entice him to show up. The Grand Medal of World Leadership, 100s of photo ops where he is front\center\higher, surround by Korean leaders who appear to be smaller and more like trump subjects than leaders. Who knows exactly what is in their enticement package, but its bound to be a embarrassing spectacle where the rest of the world watches trump being played.

IMHO, trump does not care what really happens with NK, as long as he benefits from it and has great photo ops that make him look more like a king over them. China could invade and quickly take over both NK and SK, and trump would could care less.

The number #1 thing trump excels at doing, love him or hate him, he brings out the very worst of everyone. No leader can touch him on this one. trump is an anti-leader.

2 spot lights, no waiting. We will (say that we're going to) stop everything if you pay us...... dollars a year. No way ! Too much ! .... but sir, We will spend more fighting the problem and you can say it will feed the poor. The poor should inherit big money if they're hungry.

Calamity of 2 buffoons crying for attention.

Trump caught many of his own aides and Secretary Tillerson by surprise with the announcement. This CNN article outlines how it all went down with Trump himself not initially scheduled to meet the South Koreans as he was already tied up with meetings with the video game industry. It also shows the impulsive nature of Trump, acting to accept an invitation at an impromptu meeting on the spot without consulting anyone except the three generals who arranged the last minute meeting: McMaster, Mattis and Kelly. Or maybe they too were surprised that Trump accepted the invitation verbally to the South Korean contingent, but not only that had to go out and make it a big deal for maximum publicity.

This is how Trump controls the media and the messaging for maximum effect. Now he has to deliver. That could be very difficult for Trump without an experienced staff or even an ambassador for South Korea. I think Trump got played as the South Koreans appealed to his weakness -- the need for adulation. We'll see.

Schmidt, your last para says it all. Trump is the "kid" who always will start at "z" and not "a". In order to get anything "properly" done you need a team of "negotiation" experts well ahead of any such visit; which prepare and are prepared to to discuss things beforehand. If you sent Trump (in May already?) without any planning/preparation, then you will only find out afterwards where he screwed up. Of course he will play the "big boy" and boasts about himself. I personally predict that his visit will end up in a disaster, certainly if he has no experts around him to prevent disasters. But yeah he thinks he knows it all and hangs out as an "dictator" thus he can do everything "alone" . Tillerson will likely be pushed aside as well having no Ambassador in S. Korea makes the fun only bigger. Shaking my old head in despair.

You may remember that Jimmy Kimmel, a while back on Lie Witness news, asked people on the street what they thought about Dennis Rodman being appointed as ambassador to North Korea. A lot of people were not aware of the fact that we do not HAVE an ambassador to North Korea, so it made for some interesting viewing.

Since we now live in a very strange world, it is not surprising that Dennis Rodman. last December, asked Donald Trump for permission for a more formal role in the negotiations.

    What could possibly go wrong?

I was thinking that Ivanka Trump would play a significant role in brokering the meeting. We'll see. Besides Jared is there anyone else left that Trump would trust with such an important assignment? She more than anyone knows what her daddy wants out of this.

Too bad that Pence is not available; he really scored big at the Olympics by not standing up for the S. Korean national anthem as well the N. Korea's anthem. I just wonder what role China or Russia will play in all of this. Let the fun start!

I think Bob Woodward might be starting to loose it. On MJ this morning he was suggesting that the meeting with NK has been a well executed trump plan arranged through back channel communication, and trump sudden announcement wasn't impromptu, but a the brilliant idea of trump to appear as if he just decided to do it on a whim. Woodward appears to be in the camp that trump is a brilliant master mind of everything that knows exactly what he is doing at all times, and he just playing a role of a clueless, racist, womanizer, liar, & reactionary president to throw people off.... Naw, I am not buying any of that spy novel stuff.

Yea, Woodward really started to go downhill during the Bush years and then went full on conspiracy theorist during the Obama years.

He had this switch turn where he went from the fiery journalist who helped take down Nixon to a right-wing demagogue who thought everything Obama did was a vast conspiracy. I guess that's what happens when you get in the Fox "News" bubble like he did.

It's really quite sad when you think about it.

With regards to the whole Summit of the Narcissistic Sociopaths - I just have a hard time thinking anything substantial will come from it.

North Korea is not going to give up their nuclear weapons no matter what. Donald's handlers obviously understand that, but Donald can't help himself and has likely become convinced that he and he alone will be the person who finally solves the decades old problem on the Korean Peninsula.

The only way I think that happens is if Donald recognizes North Korea's right to be a nuclear state, which would expose his weakness at negotiating. He's set himself up for a trap and Kim Jong-un knows it.
