Trump's temper may have been the "last straw" for her. First reported in the Daily Mail and later CNN, Trump was said to be very upset with her "white lies" testimony to the House Intelligence Committee and berated her for it. It was reported that Trump in his anger told her, "how she could be so stupid".
Hope Hicks has been cited as being the most loyal of the loyalists reporting to Trump. But loyalty is a two way street, and Trump severed that relationship when he so strongly berated her when she would not lie for him in her testimony. Unlike Sessions who seems to dig in when publicly berated, the 29 year old Hicks is apparently more sensitive. She resigned and Trump immediately accepted her resignation unable to admit that he was wrong.
However as the Washington Post reports, Hope Hicks was way more than a Director of Communications. She was the one person he could go to when he needed reassurance and support. As a White House official said,
“I cannot over-state how important Hope is to keeping this thing together. She really is one of the only people who has the President’s trust and respect.”
As the WP article observes: "In a building riven with suspicion and infighting, presided over by an unpredictable, some would say irrational, boss, a key pillar of support is leaving."
Well maybe she was his "enabler-in-chief" but one way relationships cannot last. I suppose Trump's three wives could tell you that, although he still is holding onto Melania...or is it the other way around?
Trump will regret his move. He is now more alone than ever at a time when the walls of justice are closing in on him.
