Nicholas Thompson, Fred Vogelstein, Wired Magazine, February 12, 2018: Inside the Two Years that Shook Facebook and the World

Thompson and Vogelstein and the staff at Wired Magazine have done an investigative report of life inside Facebook corporation and the way they went about their business as Trump partisans and Russian trolls used Facebook to disseminate false news to a select demographic favoring Trump in the 2016 election. It is a very long article, but you can skim the parts that might be more boring to get to the more revealing stuff towards the end.

The byline for the article reads: "How a confused, defensive social media giant steered itself into a disaster, and how Mark Zuckerberg is trying to fix it all."

    That fits...

We are under attack from Russia was on the news. I question if we're going to keep waiting on trying to get some control of the mess that shifted the '16 election and are certain to be used extensively until they're told to stop. This should anger every American. Our leader won't challenge Russia and we are going to have another election dirty with Russian hand prints. This should be socially escalated to cause the news to question the administration. Errr

The problem is that the Russians are ideologically closer to Trump and the new Republicans on the far right, so any actions that Trump or Congress might take to mitigate the Russian involvement in our elections hurts Republicans. It's as simple as that.

Putin certainly seems to have leverage over Trump. Who knows what...collusion, money laundering, or just sex. Sexual allegations, of course, have not undermined Trump's base one iota, so it has to be money laundering that will ultimately take him down.

It is scary to me how it might be "business as usual" in the 2018 elections as social media (Facebook, Twitter and Google) are used effectively from a far to influence our elections. And right now, there doesn't seem like there is much we can do about it with the man in the White House calling the shots and Republicans ready to declare, "hail victory" or something similar in the German language in enabling their leader.

Yes Republicans are in bed with Putin but American citizens should shout loudly "Get the hell out of our election process". Then insist it not be diluted and dismissed.

Remember when all elections were muddied by invasive Russian trolls between 2016 and 2028 ? That question can never legitimately be asked.

If this isn't a priority soon, we as a country are screwed.

If you see the "news" here, then it is clear that no one has the guts to tell it as it is. Trump (and his cronies) WANTS the Russians to meddle in the fall of 2018 and in 2020. So he can "win" again. He is begging they do that! I hope Mueller investigates this as well.

If it's Autumn on 2023 when Mueller files his report, Trumps best / greatest presidency will have an asterisk *
