Dock I'm glad you agree; the others on the site still think he cares for his "base'; no he cares only for his own "pocket". Since he's an con-man and always dealt in construction, then he knows the tricks of the trade and can pocket millions while they built this "wall". People are super naive in this country and fall for his tricks.

Washington Examiner: Trump says 'beautiful' border wall will be made of 'artistically designed steel slats'

“The Democrats, are saying loud and clear that they do not want to build a Concrete Wall - but we are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it. It will be beautiful and, at the same time, give our Country the security that our citizens deserve,” Trump posted to Twitter Tuesday evening. “It will go up fast and save us BILLIONS of dollars a month once completed!”

    =========================================================

It's hard to say what Trump really believes, but his statement that "it will go up fast and save us BILLIONS of dollars a month" is absurd. Certainly Trump thinks only of himself, but his tweet and other actions to build the wall are directed at a segment of his ignorant base. Trump launched his presidential campaign on the wall, and he needs it as a face saver if nothing else.

Is n't time that the more intelligent part of the country educates this asshole; the influx of immigrants will not be less; there are many other ways to enter this country. Thanks to our antiquated election system and lack of proper education and lack of proper vetting of our leaders in this country we get these idiotic things. All of this is an self inflicted huge wound.

I saw on Century Link that the Trump supporters have started an "money" collection to help pay for the wall, this includes some billionaires. I would think it would be illegal to do so, unless Congress approves such. If Trump gets this money sent to him, it is pure bribery because the Government is not allowed to accept gifts. Such money will likely disappear, just like the 105 million fund for the inauguration, which is now under investigation. If the Congress voted against the "wall" I don't think, you can still built it, even if you have the money for it. On top of that you need permits to built on the farmers land or federal land or who owns property there. Also if they run out of money and only a piece is built, what then? But yeah it proves again that his "base" only consist of ignorant/naive dumb asses.

It looks like Trump is going to get his government shutdown. After hearing criticism from the likes of Laura Ingram, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, he told Paul Ryan he will not sign any short term funding bill that does not include the money for his wall. Then he contacted Rush Limbaugh to reassure him that he will get the money for the wall or the government will shutdown. Limbaugh relayed Trump's message on his radio program.

This is insane. Trump takes marching orders from Rush Limbaugh and then messages him back to report. Sheesh.

    Attaboy.

    Dutch:

Apparently, the "crowd fund" for the wall had raised $1.3 million in a matter of just a few days. However,if you did the math, if the crowd fund managed to grow by $1 million per day, it would take more than 68 years to raise the $25 billion that it would take to build the wall.

    Schmidt:

I breathed a sigh of relief this morning when I read that the Senate on Wednesday had agreed on a continuing resolution that would keep the government funded into February, but things went south the next the day when the bill got to the House.

He reversed his position again, and now wants $5.7 billion for the wall - which the Senate is not going to approve.

Since 800,000 workers will be furloughed, or forced to work without pay if the government shuts down at midnight on Friday, Trump has apparently had decided that it would be unwise to take a 16 day vacation in Florida over the holiday.s

Yes we have a shut down; congratulations dumb asses Republicans. Sure this makes this country great again , for sure!

I don't hope that the Dem's give the "baby" an inch, but I'm not so sure looking at the record of the past.

It is time to show some "backbone" and stick with it.

The other thing is that they refuse to show on TV why he wants that "wall". I've written about that before but received only weak replies.

    So I'll explain again:

    1) He wants it because he can make hoards of money from it. The "contractors" already have been approached by him; the one's who give him the largest "kickbacks" get the contract; he's always done so.

    2) It certainly will not stay the "5.6 billion" ; every time they "used" that amount and run out, he will request new funds; the amount may end up to be a "100 billion" if it ever gets finished. He can leave the government as an "rich" man.

    3) The construction may take years and if the Dem's get the "power again in 2020, likely this project will be scrapped.

    4) If he selects an slatted steel fence, then the fun starts ; it is very easy with an "bottle jack" to spread the slats and crawl through; "drugs" will be dropped from "drones" anyway or "refugee's" use boats or other means; we had them already here on Sanibel island at the coast here.

    5) The cost will sky rocket if Trump's tariffs on "steel" are maintained.

    6) The "freedom caucus" lives in la la land and still live in the stone age; they are clueless about the world around this "island"

    7) Sorry to say there will be more refugee's coming because of the situation in certain S. American countries. Obama was smart to "invest" in"humanitary" help in those countries ; Trump withdrew such help; results known.

Dutch -- You've discussed the real cost of Trump's wall several times in this website. Here's an article of interest that backs up your claims:

The National Memo: An Engineer Explains Why Trump’s Wall Is So Implausible

    An extract:

"Twelve million, six hundred thousand cubic yards. In other words, this wall would contain over three times the amount of concrete used to build the Hoover Dam — a project that, unlike Trump’s wall, has qualitative, verifiable economic benefits.

"Such a wall would be greater in volume than all six pyramids of the Giza Necropolis."

"Concrete, of course, requires reinforcing steel (or rebar). A reasonable estimate for the amount of rebar would be about 3 percent of the total wall size, resulting in a steel volume of 10,190,000 cubic feet, or about 5 billion pounds. We could melt down 4 of our Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and would probably be a few cruisers short of having enough steel."

The article was written before the steel tariffs. Those tariffs would add significantly to the cost

There's more on logistics and such in the article but I'll just leave it at that. You can read more at the above link...

Why does not anyone gets the message; it is not the cost or construction. IT IS WHAT TRUMP POCKETS FROM IT ; he will be the "deal" maker and gets "royalties" from it. Are Americans that "dumb" that they don't see this?

Montana Standard, January 9, 2019: Senate president wants Montana to send $8 million for Trump's border wall

"Montana Senate President Scott Sales plans to introduce a bill that would have the state of Montana direct $8 million in funding to a wall along the U.S. southern border.

"It's just providing for the ability for us to approve around $8 million in funding for the border wall," Sales said. "We have, just within the current rate of revenue that's coming in, we can afford to pay for the $8 million.

"Sales added that if Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock believes the state has $30 million to spend on a public preschool program, the state could also help pay for a border wall. The preschool funding is in the governor's budget proposal."

This is not a joke. Trump wall supporters in the Montana legislature want Montanans to help pay for this idiotic wall and compare it to funding preschool education. Sheesh.

Schmidt most of that money ends up in Trumps pocket and parked in the Cayman's anyway. Why are the people in this country so terrible naive; it is an con-man and stays an con-man. Just believe me he gets rich of any such wall!!

CBS is reporting that Every congressperson along southern border opposes border wall funding

"Nine congressional representatives serve the districts that line the 2,000-mile southern border. They are men, women, freshman politicians and Washington veterans. The Democrats among them span liberal ideologies, while one of them is a Republican.

"But they all have one thing in common: each is against President Donald Trump's border wall."

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez who represents the McCallum Texas district said he had a private dinner with Mr. Trump last year in which Gonzalez suggested a "virtual border wall," using the latest "technology and existing military surveillance equipment currently not in use. But Mr. Trump wasn't interested in non-physical alternatives."

"At the time I thought we were going to be able to have a reasonable conversation," Gonzalez said. "I had no idea it was going to get this crazy."

This is more than just about the wall. The fight has become Trump's "line in the sand" to hold onto his base and presidency. If he loses this fight, he believes he would lose in the next election. Actually it might come quicker than that if the rumors that Mueller might file his report in February. Trump is looking increasingly desperate..."almost delusional" as Nancy Pelosi calls him. I would drop the word "almost".
