Most of us are old enough to remember the 1964 dark comedy starring Peter Seller, George C. Scott, and Slim Pickens. The subtitle was"how to stop worrying and love the bomb".
I thought of that movie this weekend as I read through the February 12 edition of Time magazine, which details Trump's pans to restart nuclear tests again for the first time since 1992. As I read through the article, I was reminded of the fact that Trump is clearly insane, which is why Chuck Schumer said he was "the most dangerous president ever" last October.
The last time that we could bomb our victory was WWII (as detailed in the CANADIAN version of "Fire and Fury by Randall Hansen.) Operation Rolling Thunder" during Vietnam was a complete failure.
Due to Trump, the Doomsday Clock" just got 30 seconds closer to midnight, and the recent scares in Hawaii and Japan did not help either. Virtually all of our allies now consider Trump to be a loose canon, which Elton John would agree with:
We need to get Trump out of office as soon as possible, Our precious bodily fluids depend on it.
Today's Al Jazeera had a story that quoted China as saying that the U.S. had s "cold war" mentality - and they are absolutely correcct:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/02/nuclear-plan-china-accuses-cold-war-mentality-180205085714251.html
According to the chart on pages 22-23 of the Time magazine, the U.S HAS 6800 warheads, while China only has 270. Russia still has 7000, which should make all of us nervous.
It is estimated that it would cost $1.3 TRILLION over the next 30 years to refurbish our existing weapons. According to Rachel Maddow, in her 2012 book, "Drift: the unmooring of American military power", we have better options - and building MORE bombs isn't one of them.
