MSN News, NY Times: Case of Missing Lebanese Prime Minister Stirs Middle East Tensions
Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri made a sudden trip to his political patron, Saudi Arabia. The next day, he unexpectedly announced his resignation by video from Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
He remains in Saudi Arabia. As the New York Times reports, "the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement, part of his governing coalition at home, charged that the Saudis were holding him against his will, while the Saudis have said they were protecting him from an unspecified assassination plot."
Hariri's disappearance and resignation is bewildering, and taken together with the arrest of Saudi Arabian princes and wealthy businessmen last weekend and also the Saudis ordering its citizens out of Lebanon on Thursday — it fuels anxiety about escalating tensions in the Middle East and a possible military conflict.
Is this a prelude to a possible invasion of Lebanon by Israel? And what the hell was Jared Kushner doing in Saudi Arabia on a sudden secretive mission? Something is going to happen there soon. I just don't know how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together right now, but I expect we'll find out soon enough.
