Like the vast majority of Trump's nominees, Sam Clovis was utterly unqualified for the position he was nominated for. Although he had no science or agricultural background, Trump nominated him to be the chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture. When it became known that he had ties to some Russians during the Trump campaign, he withdrew his name for consideration. (Today's Washington Post has more details).

For now, the Agriculture Department, and the rest of us, is safe from the damage Clovis could cause.

None of us really has any idea how many of Trump's associates had/have ties to Russia, but I would not be surprised at all if Donald Jr. gets dragged in by the Mueller team in the very near future.

It seems like an uncurable decease: he appoints all kinds of people who have the opposite of what they should know.

Like a Trump appointed guy who said the "dirty" climate/air is good for you; it helps kids lungs to adapt to the pollution. How crazy can you get. It gets sicker by the day!!

Thanks Arizona. It is just so hard to understand Trump's thinking in nominating someone so unqualified for the post of "Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics, the USDA's top science post. The nomination attracted attention because this post is traditionally filled by a scientist, and Clovis has no science background. A statute requires that nominee for the position be chosen from among "distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics". Clovis has no qualifications for that position...nada, nothing.

I suppose the anti-science Trump saw this as another defiant snub at the science community. However, his real qualification in Trump's mind is that he is another "anti-Obama". Clovis has blasted Obama saying [from Wikipedia] that Obama "uses his self-identified race as a bludgeon to assault anyone who might disagree with him... The fact that he is a socialist, does not believe in Natural Law or Natural Rights, is incensed at the mere existence of the Constitution and cannot accept the exceptionality of this nation, probably has nothing to do with why so many people disagree with him and his value system."

Yes, Clovis withdrew his nomination not because he didn't think he was qualified, but rather because of his connection to the George Papadopoulos Russian collusion. We will hear more from Clovis in Mueller's investigation.

Um, Sam? There is no such thing as natural rights. Despite Jefferson’s flowery rhetoric rights only exist inside the framework of the body politic. As for natural law that sounds suspiciously like the argument against inter-racial marriage let alone gay marriage.

Oh, and Sam? One more thing, Obama is as much of a socialist as you are, you half-wit. Of course if you support farm subsidies that work for agri-businesses benefit then maybe you are a socialist.
