Does any American citizen have even the slightest idea why we are in really fighting in Afghanistan? I think not. 16 years to fight a war that is totally meaningless to us for no other reason than to keep the military busy and make huge profits for American big business. We have an ignorant population that is ready to believe any BS they are told if it will "cut taxes and make them safe".

The very people who voulenteer to join the military so they can go and "fight" to protect our "freedom" are the enablers who have curtailed our freedoms. Fighting all these needless, immoral and expensive wars for years and years only serves the 1% that profit from them at the expense of ignorant, undereducated, macho fools who become nothing but cannon fodder to MAGA!

Is it any wonder most of the civilized world just looks at us and shakes their hean in amazement that a country can be controlled by a few ignorant voters and a clow president? We have become the laughing stock of the world and it's only the fear of our needless military might that keeps us on time. We are always fighting the wrong people for the wrong reasons and because the politicians wrap it up in patriotism the gulable masses accept it.

We have learned nothing since Vietnam Nam and I fear we never will.

Oil & Gas Pr, it's about a gas and oil pipeline proposed many decades earlier by Unocal, that was never built because of instability in the region. It's route would or will have cut Russia out of the scheme to get the reserves flowing to anywhere, except Russia.

Of course it is but do you believe any of the "patriots" that are over there fighting for "us" understand that? They are all disposable pawns of the 1%. Feed them some patriotic BS and tell them how exceptional they are and they all march off to oblivion and fight to their death. Of course, the lucky ones that get back home get to sport those fancy Veteran license plates on their pick up trucks so their comrades in arms (the police) won't stop them for any violations. Oh, and they also get that 10% discount and a lot of retailers.

No need to MAGA it still is ;(

Yes P.R. how beneficial have been all these wars since WWII been for the US? I guess we are not any safer because of it. Who wants to invade us? NOBODY!,because then they have to deal with all the shit going on here and totally revamp the government and don't want our debt either. We could have used all the trillions lost a better way; now other countries are way ahead of us and have decent healthcare/no debt as well an super infrastructure.

Who do we need to have a war against ? No country is a threat to us in any way. That's bad news for war toy manufacturing sector companies. The R, word benders will shape their self serving narrative. War on terror is what R's will try to sell but that potential base covers about 35% of the globe. Keep them (depl.) stupid and scared and buy more military related stocks.

Yes TJ you've got the picture; sorry to say you are one of the few. All our wars had only one motive: fill the pockets of certain people, as well how can we "rule" the world and rob them of their resources etc. Thus no benefit at all for the common "people" of this country. ( are there still "common" people here; who are not indoctrinated by the "church or "army" or "Hitler" style like propaganda news? Like Fox, Breitbard, Sinclair, Enquirer etc.

NBC said last night Generals or commanders are confused. Join the rest of us Mr./Miss/Mrs. Commander, we're confused too! Re-deploy to Guam, Trump's new hot spot!

Today they are discussing the continuing disaster the US has in Afghanistan. I hope and pray they don't do the most stupid thing like inviting "Blackwater", to do the "policing" there; this is asking for an even bigger disaster. I heard that they are willing to pay a billion a year for their services. Of course "Blackwater" wants "profit" nothing else. If they decide to sent more troops, then we are there fore many more years, costing us dearly as well. Trump and his cronies want an "win"; but it will never happen. It is time that this stupid country learns that if you meddle in the world that it will always bite you. We never were able to do nation building ever; let alone win wars. Afghanistan has been on the chopping block forever no wonder that this country fights back; it is an sovereign country which does not belong to us or anyone else. They should determine their destiny themselves and not dictated by this "island" what to do.

It's good to focus on the amount of money we have spent in Afghanistan, as well as the value of the valuable resources that the country has, but what isn't talked about much is how many people have died because of our war on terror.

If you guessed 500,000 people, you would be pretty close to the truth:

As of September, 2016, the direct and indirect costs of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is $5 trillion:

Yes Guy, I wrote about this many times. What did this country get back for all this waste. Nothing at all.

Trump is regardless of those numbers even spending more and more on the "tools" of war, instead of making this a better country. The deserts here are full of war junk rusting away. But yeah, it seems that this country never will learn, let alone the leaders we get. Due to our present policies, the standing of us in the world is rapidly declining. My feeling is that plenty of countries are re-evaluating their view of the US. We've had wars since 1945, but did it do this country any good?

Even if we stop all these wars we still will be paying fortunes for all the veterans who survived and need help for a long time to come. Let alone for all the maintenance of the existing expensive war junk.

Dutch, There are a lot of problems. There is a solution. The solution is not looking at a lot of problems and trying to solve each one. The solution is looking for a common denominator and addressing the common denominator. The common denominator is profit. The problem is profit is used to excuse every action. The solution is regulations. Profit has to be assigned a purpose.

Chet, sorry the only solution is to start over again, or start an revolution. As I've said so many times, there are so many loose ends as well an convoluted law system which is piecemeal and not working, except may be for the super rich.

Due to the fact as with everything, once a country gets to large to govern, like here with over 325 million people in 52 States with their own problems as well wars all over the place and a huge difference between rich and poor, let alone what nature does to this country, it is just about impossible to govern, if the central government (run by incapable persons) of having control of all the bits and pieces of this large country, it becomes just like any industry which becomes too large to control. During the 1800's when the population was thinly spread, then it worked with an Constitution. Now it has become an "noose" around the US's neck, because this country has outgrown this document, which even an zillion lawyers can't fix. Let alone an "leader" who belongs in the "loony" house and breaks all the rules or necessary rules are missing for such job. The world is laughing at us at present.

Stan Laurel used to say, " that's another fine mess you get me into, Ollie".

The modern version of Oliver Hardy is Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, whose current ideas could get a LOT of people (mostly the people of Afghanistan) into a lot of trouble.

Although he was a hawk when he was congressman from Kansas, he has now going completely the other direction. He is advocating pulling ALL of our troops out of the country by October, 2020 (conveniently, a month before the election).

The basic outline is this: a complete withdrawal of America’s 14,000 troops from Afghanistan within 14 months — that is, by October 2020 — in exchange for a promise from the Taliban not to attack our forces on the way out, along with some kind of vague assurance from them that Afghanistan will not again become a base for global terrorism. A source familiar with the deal says there is no explicit requirement for the Taliban to renounce its ties to Al Qaeda.

Critics of his plan should be dismayed by the idea that we are doing so in plain indifference to Afghanistan’s government, which wasn’t invited to the talks because the Taliban won’t deign to speak to what it considers a puppet government.

The White House has confirmed the death of Hamza bin Laden, son of slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and himself a notable figure in the group.

The younger bin Laden was killed in a US counter-terrorism operation, a statement released on Saturday said, adding that the operation took place in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

After Trump cancelled the Camp David meeting with the Taliban, the group went to Moscow a few days after Trump said peace talks with the group were dead.

Russia wants the peace talks to resume.

And the showmaster went to Afghanistan to impress people with his showmanship, touting negotiations with the Taliban. What will he do? Offer them millions of $$$$$ not to kill Americans? He seems to forget the Afghan militias kicked the Russian's asses till they went home with their tails tucked between their legs (1979 to 1989)

U.S. - Afghan war, 2001 till now, today, no end in sight.

Trump acting like a big shot turns my guts inside out.
