When I re-read your original thread this afternoon, I noticed that you referred to the fact that some people still think that the moon landing was faked. As near as I can tell, that group of people is as much as 20% of our population. The moon landing, of course, is not the only wacky idea that some of our fellow Americans believe to be true. Here are a few more examples:

I'd recommend watching the video about the hermit of Loreto because (1) it claims that a man named Thomas Zimmer predicted in the 1980's that Trump would be elected president, and "lead our nation back to God and (2) it claims that 4 angels transported a house from Jerusalem to Croatia OVERNIGHT, and then moved it 3 more times to its final resting place in Loreto.
As far as maturity and self-awareness, we (society) are still very much children, and in couple hundred years, our ancestors will look back and see a lot of absurdity and immaturity, much like we look back out our own history of 1600s - 1800s. As just one example, in the past there was perception that Witches were 100% a reality, yet today we know such things do not exist, and ever have existed. We know now have a much better idea of mental illness and other reasons that cause people behave irrationally.
As the classic question: Who is more ignorant\dangerous, the leader with bad and unhealthy ideas, or the people that follow without questioning?"
One person, such as trump, could be evaluated and determined to suffer from one or more mental illnesses. And as we have discussed in these forums, its likely trump does have mental heath problems that causs him to make very bad decisions for anyone other than himself, but that does not explain the 30%-35% of the people who believe that every single thing he says or does is coming from a master genius that can do no wrong. They don't see him as unstable and\or mentally ill, they see him as their savor that will correct everything that is wrong in their personal lives, and wrong with our national, and wrong with the entire world. For his base, trump never does anything wrong, they "have faith" there is a method to his madness (lying, serially cheater, blaming the victim, etc), even though they can't explain he behaves more like con artist trying to sell them worst car on parking lot, than ethical man striving to good. Somehow all the he does that is wrong\bad\unethical by normal standards, is perceived by them them as being signs of a savory.
Trump base = cult.
