Vox, July 17, 2017: Mitch McConnell is breaking the Senate
This Vox article is about Mitch McConnell and his own obsession with power and why he always chooses party over country.
“The cardinal rule of McConnell is he will do anything to acquire more power, or to achieve an outcome he thinks achieves his political interest,” says Adam Jentleson, a former aide to ex-Democratic leader Harry Reid.
“I don’t think he’s a conservative; I think he’s a transactionalist. I think he wants to keep the title of majority leader,” says Jason Pye of the conservative activist group Freedomworks. “His vested interest is taking power.”
Mitch McConnell use of the filibuster rule to block Obama's agenda in his first term was the unprecedented in Senate history. He blocked not only controversial deals but also uncontroversial ones. "The filibuster became an omnipresent threat through which McConnell could extract concessions, delay action, or waste precious Senate floor time. “He ramped up the tactics of mass obstruction in a way we had never seen before,” says Ornstein."
McConnell was able to do this with impunity because he knows quite well that the American public is very ignorant and uncaring of what goes on in Washington. His strategy for gaining power was quite simple and effective. Block everything Obama wanted to do...and I mean everything. And then blame Obama for not getting the job done. That strategy worked beautifully. Even liberals turned against Obama. I know because I interviewed many of them when I canvassed for Obama. It shocked me how little Americans knew about their government.
However, now his latest tactic to push through Trumpcare without debate is not working. Don't underestimate him though. A guy consumed by power is capable of anything to avoid any defeat. He is ruthless.
But America is waking up (as the title of this thread asks). Americans cannot rest in their efforts to protest loudly to ensure that Trumpcare never replaces Obamacare. Never!
