While being highly critical of Trump and Republicans, at the end of the article he offers what he would like to see Democrats do. I think many in this website will agree with him.
Yes, for a long time I have thought of the republication party as being the party of people who look at life as a "glass half empty". To be clear, its a bit like sexual orientation, it's how an individual perceives everything, without the ability change that specific outlook even if they wanted to. If such an individual were to win 100 million in the lottery, they will complain saying "If god really loved me, it would have been 200 million. He is only giving half as much as I deserve". They can't identify with seeing things in a more balanced or positive manner. They love being miserable. This is just a generalization; it's rare for any specific individual to be a caricature.
At the heart of being a fiscal conservative is the idea that the free market can always do a better job and do it cheaper, and government efforts are at best OK, and always more costly. Take a look at Russia, the government controls nearly everything, and nearly everything sucks. And their government is extremely corrupt. The conservative perception is that the freer the market for everything, the better....
Liberals lean toward having the government highly policing or running everything business related because we have seen what happens when the free market is not properly supervised; an elite few get very very rich by taking full advantage of their position and power, and legally steal the life saving of millions of people, leaving them with nothing. Even after the collapse of several big firms in 2009, those in charge got millions in bonuses. Nobody at near the top was ever held responsible. Their punishment was they weren't billionaires anymore, they were reduced to being millionaires who had to downsize to a couple of homes, and one medium size yacht.
