My opinion based on the plotted course of the container ship in the link provided and the weights of the two ships and pictures of damage. The container ship had to be fully loaded to have damage to the upper bow. Loaded that container ship weighs 40,000 tons. That much weight at 14.6 knots is an unbelievable unstoppable force. The plot shows the container ship making a right angle turn at the point of impact. A right angle turn on a ship that big can only happen when the ship is stopped. I follow the course and see the container ship stopping. The only thing that stops a ship that big is propulsion system. I say the container ship was backing down under full power and the collision happened just as the Crystal stopped. Then it made the right angle turn and proceeded on its way. International regulations require that ship to have stayed at the collision sight. For the damage to be as small as it is both ships had to be almost dead in the water. What makes it really bad for the Navy is the size and weight of the container ship. Right of way rules are superseded by maneuverability in open ocean and designated channels. The USS Fitzgerald was obliged to stay clear of and give right of way to the container ship.

I see. The NYT reveals a better conception of what happened. There seems to be a timeline discrepancy there. The ACX captain should receive a citation for leaving the scene of an accident.

FYI, all ships personnel certified to stand navigation watch are required to be able to communicate in English much the same as airline pilots.

Fitzgerald is equipped with AEGIS system. Somebody had to actively override and shut down that system to prevent destroying the Container ship when it's course became an attack on a US war ship. The impossibility of anything getting close to the Fitzgerald was materialized by the Container ship Crystal. The Dept of the Navy is probably assuming the scenario of a strike and destruction of the Fitzgerald having taken place. Hitting that destroyer is analogous to driving into Fort Knox with a pickup truck, loading as much as can be carried and then driving off down the road. Hitting the USS Fitzgerald is an impossibility .

Ships like the Fitzgerald aren't meant to detect cargo ships, they're meant to detect military ships or military threats. I read that somewhere on the internet, so it must be factual.

I guess we should change the title of this thread; not 7 but now 10 missing. This ship's name was McCain ( Probably S.S. meaning steamship; fits with McCain's age) I just wonder about what our Navy is doing; I guess since it is now run by the GOP it is dealt with as the "healthcare" disaster. Probably Trump appointed an "chicken farmer" who never ever has seen any "sea" to captain. Also the US think they own all the seas; but yeah there are also other ships who have rights and are much larger. Our government loves to be "obstructionists" thus practice such also on the "open" seas. ha ha.

    Time to discipline the admirals.

Stop the navy from cutting across shipping lanes. Consider how stupid it would seem to have the air force cutting across established flight paths. Absolutely ludicrous. Having another Destroyer hit broad side does not make sense. The Admirals are punishing the Fitzgeralds crew. Looks like the Admirals need a little discipline for letting 3 Billion dollars worth of our national defense end up in repair yards. The Captains of ships are automatically blamed. Another destroyer sidelined looks like the Admirals should be blamed.

Admirals are responsible for letting this happen again.

Sad for the men and/or their families. We need to lose 10,000 as a result of downsizing.

This is a current article on the topic.

1/2 way paying attention I saw the crash footage this morning and thought it was about the June crash.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Happened again ! Wow. Happens to be the USS John McCain. Symbolism. Vote against my healthcare / tax break Bill and I will damage the ship named after Dad/Grandpa.

You couldn't make this stuff up.

That was humorous. Like Gomer Pyle not catching a joke and responding to a literal interpretation. There's a name for it and I'll look it up. (That's more humor).

The oil tanker was much larger than the McCain destroyer, the captain must have thought no harm could come to the destroyer because he thought it was a solar eclipse. Until the destroyer got bonked, and he sounded general quarters because he thought the moon had struck it. That's what happens when you appoint chicken farmers to run a military, or any other form of government. Two ships in two months, is that a record? Terrorists can't even get that lucky.

The commander in chief should say, heads up asses ? Well it's on my watch and the buck stops here. Oh wait, I am respresponsible for nothing bad.

There, I fixed it for you.

Since someone brought up USS and another wrote the meaning of USS, what was the skipper's SS meaning? The SS Minnow.

I wish someone would come along and fix the thread title too, to lose instead of loose.

Next time I'll do it in Dutch; now happy. (SS means, in this case Sailing Ship or even worse the Nazi elite.)

Thus the story is the SS McCain lost its sails in an previous accident and its old wooden rudder was eaten by water termites. Problem solved. Forget the "U" ; we are no longer "United", ask Trump and the Alt Right.
