The Montana GOP candidate acted as an total asshole by body slapping and punching an reporter of the Guardian news paper (British)

However the same newspaper published an great story about this GOP guy: The guy is an multi millionaire who got huge investments in stocks etc. in companies in Russia, which US citizens are not allowed to trade because of the sanctions. Furthermore he has ties there. Fits right in with the Trump "mafia", thus the "web" of Trump only gets bigger by the day.

Being a former Montana resident, I have been following the news of the election and the misdemeanor assault by Greg Gianforte against the Guardian reporter. Gianforte had the endorsement of several major newspapers in Montana, but at least two of them (Billings and Missoula) have rescinded their endorsements this morning as people go to the polls today to vote. Unfortunately for Robert Quist, his Democratic opponent in the election, about two-thirds of the ballots that will likely be cast have already been cast in early voting and mail-in ballots. Gianforte was a slight favorite before this episode but he is not widely liked. He is mostly known for his wacky anti-science views including his belief that the earth is only 10,000 years old. I saw him as a weak candidate for Republicans.

However, Democrats nominated Rob Quist, a folk singer, and very liberal. He would not allow any mainstream Democrats to campaign for him in the state...only Bernie Sanders. That was unfortunate because he has largely cast his lot with the Bernie supporters to the exclusion of more moderate Democrats. Hence the endorsement of Gianforte by many Montana newspapers may have been one of "holding your nose".

Montana is a red state, but it has shown it can elect a Democratic governor if that person is more centrist. Montana's last two governors were both Democrats. I certainly hope Quist wins, but if he loses, Dems should do some soul searching as to why he lost to a weak candidate, a guy who already had lost the governor's race to a Democrat. They will blame the money, but not the choice of the candidate.

Despite what the media are saying, this is a referendum on the Bernie movement. Quist made it that way. He didn't have to.

I saw also an picture of Gianforte with the son of Trump. As the Guardian said his ties to Russia are also questionable and may be illegal related to the sanctions. How low can this country sink???

The Democrats being pummeled for denying the progressive liberal part of their party in favor of the one world government neo liberal conservative ( that sounds so wierd ) billionaire class.

That is why To Perez was attacked just last week . That is why Hillary lost . So in a red state, where the electorate is looking for a conservative democrat , the party in all it's wisdom , or for some reason we regular people cannot understand , they run a liberal . And the devil wins again. Another Russian asset installed .

You have to wonder sometimes what the hell is going on ?

This GOP candidate took a page from the Trump playbook, "I'd like to punch that guy in the face"!

Do GOP voters and backers care? I doubt it since most republican minions are violent by nature, look at videos of Trump rallies, that tells us something. Do republican voters care who their politicians have ties to? like Russia? I doubt it.

Montana's governor is Democrat Steve Bullock. He beat Gianforte by 3 points in the 2016 election, the same election in which Trump beat Hillary by 20 points. Prior to Bullock, Montana had another Democrat as governor, Brian Schweitzer, who won in 20o4 by 3 points and was reelected in 2008 by 33 points. Montana's senator Jon Tester is also a Democrat.

All three of them could best be described as center left. So the notion that Montana is a red state based on Trump's big 20 point win over Hillary is false. Given the right candidates Montanans will back Democrats or Republicans.

The point that I wanted to make about Rob Quist not wanting Tom Perez to campaign for him in the state is that it sends a message that divisive politics are here to stay. If you're a Bernie supporter you have a true friend in Rob Quist. Anyone else...well maybe and maybe not. Montanans want people who can work both sides of the aisle. They made a mistake in electing Trump, but history will tell you that over many years they try to elect the best person...not an extreme ideologue.

I'm not saying Quist is an ideologue...only that the way he campaigned suggests he might be. Voters observe that.

The guy used far right talking points. He has previously said semi (suggested) threatening comments towards "liberal media members".

I heard 70% of mail in early votes are in and nearly every Trump voter loves him. Surprise, surprise. He will likely win comfortably and this would help not hurt him. Be a bully while bashing liberals and watch the popularity rise.

That's what it's about TJ, be aggressive with media and anyone else that looks or talks at them in a way they don't like.

Yes Gianforte is headed to a win. He has a big lead with 72 percent in. Disgusting. House Republicans will probably give him a standing ovation when he arrives in Washington.

The state of this country and it's citizens makes me frustrated and angry. I long for a clear path towards change but don't see it.

I still think this election was lost by the Democrats and Quist more than it was a win for Gianforte. Dems are not over the Hillary - Bernie split, and when they huddled together and chose a well liked folk singer with zero experience over two well qualified experienced politicians it raised some eyebrows. In other words, they believed that going with a candidate with a clean slate and "no government experience" would have appeal, but as they were to discover, Quist had baggage and the Republicans exploited it ruthlessly.

This is an election that could have been won with the right candidate. Furthermore, when Bernie Sanders and Tom Perez were on their nationwide tour together trying to gin up support for Democrats, the folk singer said "no" to Tom Perez. Only Bernie can campaign for him in the state. I think this sent the wrong message on unity, especially for a guy whose website says he will be a representative "for all Montanans and Americans". It was a move designed to appeal to the Bernie supporters, but he already had that support. He needed the center.

    My opinion.

Again as I said many times this country gets what they deserve, especially Montana can be proud of what piece of dirt they elected. But just wait until they loose out on their healthcare and plenty other things. Yes in that State the world is indeed only 10000 years old and did sent another Russian lover to Washington. Where is the barf bucket?

Sometimes paybacks are a bitch, someday that representative will meet Mr. Right or Ms. Right, who will defend himself/herself and punch him in the face, or worse.

Huffington Post, June 10, 2015: Noah From The Bible Didn’t Retire, So This Likely GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Doesn’t See Why You Should

In a February talk at the Montana Bible College about how to find “godly purpose” in work, Gianforte explained why retirement isn’t consistent with biblical teachings.

“There’s nothing in the Bible that talks about retirement. And yet it’s been an accepted concept in our culture today,” he said. “Nowhere does it say, ‘Well, he was a good and faithful servant, so he went to the beach.’ It doesn’t say that anywhere.”

“The example I think of is Noah,” he continued. “How old was Noah when he built the ark? 600. He wasn’t like, cashing Social Security checks, he wasn’t hanging out, he was working. So, I think we have an obligation to work. The role we have in work may change over time, but the concept of retirement is not biblical.”

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Gianforte's worldviews are not unique. Christian evangelicals share his worldview and that's why Social Security is always under attack by Republicans. Now they have one more in Congress who will ask everyone to work without Social Security until they are 600...like Noah did.

We're not making this up. This is the wackadoo that Montanans just elected to represent them. Montanans voted...or maybe I should say 54.2 percent of Montanans voted. The other 45.8 percent of registered voters stayed home.
