Motherboard, January 28, 2017: The Data that Turned the World Upside Down
This article in Motherboard was a wake up call for me. And it helps explain the scientific basis behind Trump's apparent Tweets that we so love to scorn. It has to do with the most sophisticated data mining tools ever developed by a private company called Cambridge Analytica. The database of profiles of millions of Americans that they have developed is based on several sources with Facebook likes being just one source. Every time you click on a Facebook story with a "like" it becomes a part of your preference profile that is mined by companies to categorize your political and social profile, that is then used to target you specifically in political ads. One has to marvel at the level of sophistication that Cambridge Analytica has used to not only mine the data but also then use the data to influence your vote with targeted ads.
Trump used Cambridge Analytica in a big way during the latter months of his campaign when the tide seemed to turn more in his favor. What is also scary is that Steve Bannon is a board member of Cambridge Analytica.
Read the article. It scares the shit out of me.
Something amazing is that so many apps request access to a lot of your personal information. Contacts is one that so many people give up for free apps.
