Ruth Ben-Ghiat, The Atlantic, August 10, 2016: An American Authoritarian
Somehow I missed Ruth Ben-Ghiat's excellent August article in the Atlantic written three months before the election. She makes a comparison of Donald Trump and Benito Mussolini - focusing on the rise of fascism in Italy and the similarities in the Trump campaign. It is particularly unnerving as we now see the antics of the elected Donald Trump more clearly and can look back at Mussolini's playbook and see the same thing. I cannot copy and paste from the article, but in any case it is worth your time to read it in it's entirety.
I am back in the USA now having just spent seven weeks in South Africa. That will be a subject of a different thread.
Yes Schmidt that is correct; the people here are way too stupid to realize what they have done. All the signs are there that this guy wants to be an dictator as Mussolini was. Making stupid calls even now and then scolding China, while he's not even inaugurated.
He'll create more and more enemy's for us, because he does not think, before he does something. His huge "ego" is running the show; that will be his undoing, I hope.
Discussing the "Taiwan call" just now on Msnbc... It was said he doesn't just want to be the king of the USA, he is a provocateur. He wants to be the king of drama.
That was heavy. I believe he's a man child and this is a game to him. The selection of Sec. Of State was said to be down to four. Now it may have grown to a group of eight. Somebody please..... tell him this is serious.
Tony, yes you said it right he sees all of this as just an game; I just saw his "act" on TV where he accused Carson of being an bully and hitting other kids and even stabbing an kid with an knife, but sure, appoint someone like that . Wow. Sorry being President is no "game" you are playing with lives and "humans" all over as well an possible nuclear war.
Unbelievable how stupid this country is to vote for this dangerous individual.
Posted on this thread because Trump in subject.
Nafta, Did I say I would cancel that ? I said a lot of things.
Sure Trump will have to back off several of his outrageous campaign promises, but he'll do so deflecting criticism in his usual style and Tweeting vitriol at 3:00 am (sniffing time) against anyone who goes against him.
Regarding NAFTA, however, I disagree with many of my liberal friends that it has been a bad deal. Some jobs were lost and others created but overall a boost to the economies of all three nations. It needs some improvements, which would be incorporated in the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement not yet approved.
Vox has an excellent article on what Bobby Jindal's policies of gutting heath care budgets has done to the poor in Louisiana. Is Louisiana a prelude to what Trump plans to do to America? Scary proposition.
Vox, December 7, 2016: I visited one of America's sickest counties
Most of the Jindal cost cutting is described in the second half of the article.
Excellent article; and this country claims to be number one in the world? Sorry it is an banana republic as I said before.
Like the article said; nothing will improve for these people under Trump, but will only get worse. He only cares for the rich and his own ego; it shows in the selections he made.
