    Hi All

I started a petition to have Obama push through Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court without Senate approval (yes it turns out that may be possible).

    change.org/p/the-obama-white-house-appo...

I have no distribution network to promote something like this, so help to spread it is very appreciated.

    Text of the petition:

It is unprecedented for the Senate not to have a hearing on Merrick Garland for appointment to the Supreme Court, and it is partisan politics at its worst.

President Obama has the right to have his appointee be judged fairly, and since the Senate failed to do so, it has abdicated its right to do so.

It turns out that the Senate's approval is not strictly necessary in the first place:

We need Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court to deal with huge issues that are threatening our democracy:

*The voter suppression caused by the gutting of The Voting Rights Act.

*Citizens United has made politicians beholden to the special interests instead of the people.

*Gerrymandering prevents people from fairly choosing their Representatives in the House.

If we don't act now, there will likely be very little democracy left in four years for us to try to save.

Without a working democracy the problems our country faces will be insurmountable for generations to come.

Here is wishing the community here the best in these hard times.

Do the words Senate or "President elect" mean anything ? Why would the R Senate pass a 50/50 (conserv. / liberal) when they can wait 4 months and pass a 95 / 5 guy. Just saying, you want a compromise when they're making all of the rules. Disappointment is something we will all get familiar with. Stay tuned, it gets much worse.

Since TJ appears to disagree with the OP then it might be safe to constructively and objectively look at the proposed petition idea. By no stretch of the imagination can the words "by and with" be construed to be to imply non-conditional. Then to arbitrarily determine a reasonable time period would be a direct violation of checks and balances. President and Mrs. Obama both being lawyers constitute an ultimate combination of the most and best educated first family and probably any family. It would be safe to assume they are examing all possibilities as well as their team of how to advance the Presidents choice for a justice. In view of a newly elected President proposing to destroy Barack's legacy I would suppose Barack will do whatever he can to place his choice in the court.

I don't bet, but since I know on how Washington works, forget it. The scramble to "power grab" any position in this Government has begone, so they've got other things on their mind. No one expected this outcome so the "chickens" lost their heads in the turmoil. The GOP will absolutely reign and get their people into it for sure; we can object but things have changed; the "bully" will make sure he gets it his way. Congratulations America. Planned Parenthood no more, abortions then you have to go outside this country, LGBT people forget your marriage licence and respect. Etc.

I agree. Garland's nomination is as good as dead.
