WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's business losses in 1995 were so large that they could have allowed him to avoid paying federal income taxes for as many as 18 years, according to records obtained by The New York Times.

In a story published online late Saturday, the Times said it anonymously received the first pages of Trump's 1995 state income tax filings in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The filings show a net loss of $915,729,293 in federal taxable income for the year.

That Trump was losing money during the early to mid-1990s — a period marked by bankruptcies and poor business decisions — was already well established. But the records obtained by the Times show losses of such a magnitude that they potentially allowed Trump to avoid paying taxes for years, possibly until the end of the last decade.

Trump's campaign released a statement on Saturday lashing out at the Times for publishing the records and accused the newspaper of working to benefit the Republican nominee's presidential rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

"The New York Times, like establishment media in general, is an extension of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party and their global special interests," the campaign said, calling Trump "a highly skilled businessman who has a fiduciary responsibility to his business, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required."

The statement added that Trump had paid "hundreds of millions" of dollars in other kinds of taxes over the years.

Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, used the Times story to needle Trump about not releasing his tax returns and contending during his first debate with Clinton that not paying federal income taxes would show he was "smart."

Mook said in a statement that Trump apparently avoided paying taxes for two decades "while tens of millions of working families paid theirs. He calls that 'smart.'" Mook added: "Now that the gig is up, why doesn't he go ahead and release his returns to show us all how 'smart' he really is?"

Since 1976, every major party presidential nominee has released tax returns. Clinton has publicly released nearly 40 years' worth, and Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, has released 10 years of his tax returns.

But after initially saying that he would make his returns public during the course of his campaign, Trump switched course, citing what he said were years of ongoing IRS audits and the advice of his attorneys to keep them private as those audits proceed.

Former IRS officials have expressed skepticism that anyone would be audited so frequently. And IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, when was asked at a House committee hearing on Sept. 21 whether people under IRS audit are free to release their returns or IRS letters informing them they are being audited, said they are.

In its story, the Times said the three pages of documents were mailed last month to a Times reporter who had written about Trump's finances. A postmark indicated they had been sent from New York City and the return address claimed the envelope had been sent from Trump Tower, the newspaper said.

Trump's campaign did not directly address the authenticity of the excerpts from Trump's tax filings. Former Trump accountant Jack Mitnick, whose name appears as Trump's tax preparer of the filings, confirmed their authenticity, the newspaper reported.

On the campaign trail, Trump continued to veer from scripted economic arguments to personal attacks on Clinton.

At a rally Saturday night, Trump questioned Clinton's loyalty to her husband, adding an explosive personal charge against his Democratic opponent to a turbulent week when he repeatedly veered off script.

"Hillary Clinton's only loyalty is to her financial contributors and to herself," Trump told thousands gathered in Manheim, Pennsylvania. "I don't think she's even loyal to Bill if you want to know the truth ... Why should she be, right? Why should she be?"

Trump also seized on a leaked recording from a Clinton fundraiser in February, where she expressed empathy for young voters who were siding with her primary opponent, Bernie Sanders, saying that for people who don't see any economic opportunities, the idea that "you could be part of a political revolution is pretty appealing." The hacked recording was published Tuesday by the Washington Free Beacon

Clinton called them "children of the Great Recession" and added: "And they are living in their parents' basement. They feel that they got their education and the jobs that are available to them are not at all what they envisioned for themselves."

Trump sought to turn her words into a new pitch for Sanders supporters, although Sanders himself has endorsed Clinton and denounced Trump. The businessman contended Saturday that the audio shows Clinton "demeaning and mocking Bernie Sanders and all of his supporters" and added: "To sum up, Hillary Clinton thinks Bernie Sanders supporters are hopeless and ignorant basement dwellers."

I would like to add as follows; Question: Are people smart who loose just about an billion and don't pay taxes? I talked to him about the Trump Shuttle and tried to put sense into him, but he knew it better and wanted his name in LARGE letters on the fuselage, which you can't do on smaller less fuel burning planes which would have been more efficient also with lower landing cost fees and an frequency attractive to commuters; then I learned what the guy was all about. But it was an fun lunch for sure!!!

Get ready for it. If elected this is the type of potus we would have. For 18 months 75 pct of this country asked for and later demanded his taxes. Yesterday a package shows up (it should have had a freaking bow on it)

Trumps taxes. 30 years worth ? HE'LL NO ! It was the "one year" that serves him. Makes him look like a victim. Poor Donald :( - well don't have the FBI check this for prints. Don't check the saliva that licked the envelope. Trump and his people just played you.

Lost nearly a billion should scream what a loser business man he is. Instead it portrays him as a victim who deserves another chance. That's what he wanted and it seems to be what he's getting.

Where's Mike Wallace (60 min.) Tick tick tick When you need him ?

Where is Jared ? Has he retired ?

I don't think attacking Trump on taxes is a good move. Unless he has done anything illegal he is only doing what every other American is doing. Taking advantage of anything in the tax code that is selfserving. I don't know of anybody that doesn't take the standard deduction on the short form or any deduction available in the long form. There isn't one person that doesn't recognize over seas and offshore tax shelters. Clinton's soninlaw, Chelsea's husband, has a hedge fund in the Cayman Islands that has zero tax rate on capital gains.

Not complaining about Trumps taxes rather the lack thereof. He will tell you he's charitable but won't prove it. He will say he's worth X but won't substantiate it. He will tap dance all day but no proof. He believes you're not worthy of those details and talk to his lawyers if you're trying to get to the truth. This man is seeking a position of ultimate control. Why is America allowing this reality tv host to take over ?

You're being a Clinton hater. Keep on track if you can. Trump and his taxes. If trump killed 18 in N.Y. you would report how close it was to Chelsea apartment. Focus.

I have to disagree here. I think these leaked documents make him look terrible. His whole campaign is built on how successful he is. Losing nearly one billion dollars during an economic boom isn't very successful.

To me this is a non-issue, as long as it was done legally whats the point of dragging up a bad business risk from 20 years ago,I am not a fan of either one of these candidates , on one hand you have a narcissistic braggart who is given to risk taking and then on the other hand you have a compulsive liar, who 's ambition far exceeds her moral code of ethics. I am going to have to vote for one or the another, maybe I 'll check out Gary a little more.

Not paying your taxes is a little more than a "non-issue." That means he didn't pay for police officers or firemen paychecks; for the wars he is for, then against, then for, then against; for infrastructure projects, food programs for the poor, and countless other things.

Calling Trump's gaming of the system and not paying any taxes a non-issue is quite chilling. His entire candidacy is based on his wealth and business prowess. Claiming a nearly $1 billion loss in an effort to never have to pay federal income taxes again is a pretty big fucking deal to me.

    Great idea.

Gary Johnson - someone who doesn't know where Aleppo is and can't name a single world leader he likes. He is so ready to take over the levers of our Federal government and become our Commander-in-Chief.

TJ, You still don't get it. You have to turn everything I say into Anti-Democratic. I point the things out that the campaign should avoid or do something about to win. If Hillary lloses it will be on you and her campaign staff for not protecting her back. And all I here from the campaign is how important I am to them and send more money. Get past the knee jerk and try objectivity. The dangerous part of this campaign is Trump Supporters and maybe supporters. The more Trump is defamed the more they defend him. Hillary supporters on the other hand tend to be more of everything that is better. They have a conscience. The goal is to avoid anything that pings that conscience.

If all the Hillary supporters were as devoted as TJ then there wouldn't be a problem but with the undeniable clear choice at 46% there is a big problem. That is why everything I say here I say to the Clinton campaign.

On MSNBC the question was raised not about Trump, but our government who does allow all these things to be legal.

In other words, actually an corrupt government which closes their eyes for such and supporting these practices. Indeed like what was said about Chelsea Clinton; her husband who parks his money in Cayman's, like Romney and pay no taxes on it. Furthermore since Hillary plays her game together with the "big" money as well for her campaign, I can imagine that certain people agree that this government is corrupt and caters to the rich. No wonder that the Trump crowd want change; however they are forgetting that Trump is part of the problem. Sorry to say the "rich power blocks" worked on this for decades to get things their way. It creeped into the government as an sneaky snake and made sure it did not get into the open until now. I bet there is much more hidden related to "lobbying" and tax "rewards" then is known.

TJ, is probably right that Trump leaked his tax form. Trump didn't do anything that any other person wouldn't do. I don't know of a single person that didn't take a deduction available to them. Hillary is getting set up for some embarrassing revelations. No, TJ, this is not Hillary Hating, it is Hillary Helping. Besides Chelsea's husband using a tax shelter he lost his investors 25 million dollars and a couple of months later bought the 10.5 million dollar condo. Is that good business? They need to have a back-up plan as this tax uproar goes on. You know my advice.
