This controversy is as stark as our race for prez.. Many see it 100% in one direction and give no consideration to the other side of the coin. Mr. Kaepernick suggests their are racial issues in this country. A trump supporter offered a solution..... just send the African Americans back where they came from. Crazy stuff. I can't believe the people who we dragged here in chains, enslaved, beat, raped and killed, eventually gave freedom to while never letting them get close to legal equality, refused to offer most jobs to or most homes to or any fairness in the legal channels, aren't quietly happily standing to say what a great flag that is.

Surprisingly there have been military members who have come forth with the statement: We didn't fight and/or die for your right to stand, we did so for you to have a choice to stand or not.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar made a statement yesterday supporting Kaepernicks right to have his stance. Many others say it's an insult to our military. Mark my words..... Equality is not arriving this afternoon (sadly in my view) and the tidal wave of white unhappiness is going to lead to a major state of unrest (including mass violence) in this country. Trump has sensed this and he's riding that wave towards our highest office. When you consider what could have been and should have been a recipe to great times in a great country.... you instead get small, scared, weak people who want to cower with their guns awaiting an ugly confrontation that would bring us to our lowest point ever. Even if/when Trump loses..... that hate, fear, and anger won't have gone anywhere. The small numbers in law enforcement won't be able to contain masses trying to whiten this place up.

Yes T.J. I told you so. The military should not see such as an insult; it should be pointed to our leaders who keep fighting and starting the wrong wars and use the military as scapegoats. The Bushes should be convicted of war crimes; not the military ; they just follow orders.

TJ -- Good analysis. Well said. Yes the hyper-patriotism of the Trump supporters will carry on beyond the election along with their hate, fear and anger. Trump is stoking fires that will not be easily put out.

Lew Alcindor commenting brings to my mind that the only thing I know that he has done is change his name. Disrespecting the flag is disrespecting your home. The right course is to respect the flag and battle the people that are trying to take it away from the majority. This is a Democracy and the rule of Democracy is the voice of the majority. Make the country great for everybody and then let the few losers protest by disrespecting the flag.

Chet, grow up. Are you on the Trump train. Kareem (yes with religeous freedom you can change who or what you follow) became a Muslim many years ago. On social media yesterday, the comments had many persons suggesting that Kaepernick has become a Muslim and thus he hates America. That's a statement from the sterotypical uneducated whites following Trump. If you're in that group, fine. If you're looking for reasons to join those ranks, that's fine too. Consider what it does to your image though.

If you believe everything is fine and dandy in the ole US of A...... you have every right to do so. It makes you seem a bit uninformed at best. Maybe you should get in your chevy and drive to the area across the RR tracks and get a glimpse of how the other half lives.

TJ, That was a good rant but you either didn't care, didn't understand or didn't read my post. A short version for you to understand is to protest at Wall Street. That is the source of all our problems, but people's knees start to shake thinking about criticising the owners .

Just on social media was a picture of Colin Kaepernick at practice. He was wearing socks with pig's in police hats. He does seem to love the attention. Myself, I love the socks. Many in red hats (make America great again) think that he is the devil and they pray that he'll be brutally injured. At the same time, the Dallas Cowboys and (my) Minnesota Vikings have lost their starting quarterbacks for the season. Sooo while some are hating the guy, others are wondering the risk of taking him as a new addition to their teams. Remember, he didn't injure a woman, a child, or a senior citizen. He didn't get arrested for drugs or alcohol, he didn't lie cheat or steal anything. He sat down. Some just can't forgive that heinous act.

    Kaepernick said:

"But I think the two presidential candidates that we currently have also represent the issue that we have in this country right now"

He didn't differentiate between Hillary and Trump. He should have at least been comparative and favored Hillary.

Colin Kaepernick has decided to donate his first one million dollars of this years salary to community groups who work towards justice. OMG, this on top of the fact that he sat down. Will the evil never stop. Some said put your money where your mouth is. He just did. At last nights game it's said that 3 football players sat during the anthem. Soldiers / veterans have said we didn't fight for a song or a piece of cloth. We fought for peoples rights. We may be onto something here. Stay tuned. Others want severe negative things to happen to him because he sat down. I saw a great story about this earlier today where a veteran is very much behind him being unhappy with the fact that over 1000 people were killed by cops last year and none (no cops) were found to have done anything wrong. Hmmmmm

Huffington Post: Santa Clara Police Union Threatens Boycott of 49ers Games Over Kaepernick Protest

About 70 Santa Clara police officers moonlight as security officers at 49ers games. Several of them are threatening to boycott the games unless the NFL takes action against their "employee". From the HP:

"Officers are angered by Kaepernick's comments about police brutality and accusations that officers "murder minorities." They are also frustrated by the San Francisco quarterback's decision to wear socks during practice that depict pigs in police uniforms, according to the association.

"The 49ers are allowing this to come out from an employee and it's making for a hostile work environment for us at the stadium," Saunders said.

The union's letter also stated that its board of directors have "a duty to protect its members and work to make all of their workings environments free of harassing behavior."

Since the officers are not acting in an official capacity but are rather paid by a security firm, it is their right to protest Kaepernick's actions by not working the 49ers games. The security firm will simply hire replacements from other locals.

However, it does reflect poorly on the police officer's brand that they would use political leverage to force the NFL's hand.

And still some people say there is nothing wrong with this country? All child's play!

Over 1000 killed and no charges against anyone.... In Maryland there we charges in the Freddy Gray case but that was just a formality. Once it went through fake court for cops.....charges were dismissed. I'll fully admit that if cops killed over 1000, 90% may have deserved what they got. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. When cops use a taser on someone 5 times while a group of 8 armed cops are holding them down. Folks, that's a problem. Tasers are said to hurt like hell. When introduced it was suggested that a blast would put you down harshly. Multiple zaps are a problem when the person receiving them has no weapon and didn't just kill someone. Recently taser shots to the groin are being done frequently. I think there are some deeper issues going on. Giving a blank check to cops has not served us well. People die - by cop - all of the time. Again, if a person kills two on a street corner with a gun and a knife.... put 18 bullets into them. If it's a lesser offense use good judgement. Grand Juries should be seen as the stupid joke that they are. If you live in a beautiful home and you're as white as Gomer Pyle, there is no problem with cop violence or racial inequity. This action (by Kaepernick), and remember HE JUST SAT DOWN..... is the first discussion this country has had on civil rights in many many years. I hope it continues being discussed because the machine in broken.

Historically there is a relationship between violence and income. Energize the country with more and higher wages and their will be a reciprocal decline in violence. Kaepernick can take a knee during the anthem in protest but if he wants a change he needs to sit down in front of wall street.

I still think it is the militarism in the police force; way too many ex military in it who only learned to shoot to kill. Ex military don't belong in any police force. The training should be serve and protect; not playing bullies or military force.

Use as an example the British bobby's who did in the past not even carry an gun.

Dutch , The reality is the reality. People don't want to be cops to promote the Peace Corp. They usually want to stop crime and are aware of the possibilities of danger and life threatening situations. It is naive to think that a person capable of entering a life threatening situation is also capable of changing immediately into a person that can extend the benefit of doubt. If you want safer police increase their numbers and equipment so situations can be difused. Putting anybody in a life threatening situation is dangerous. Increase the odds on the police side and the danger will decrease. All police units should be at least two officers and a K9. All the arrests I have seen on TV using a K9 resulted in immediate submission. No tasers or gun shots. If the country wants better safer police then spend the money.
