I just finished watching the entire ceremony honoring the five slain officers in Dallas and I have to say I came across deeply moved by all of the speeches. Former President Bush gave a wonderful speech honoring the slain police officers, but I was most touched by President Obama's nearly 45 minute speech honoring the slain officers while at the same time calling for both sides to come together and have a dialogue about the distrust between so many citizens and the police who are sworn to protect them.

He spent time talking about the impossible task we ask of our officers of being a social worker, drug counselor, peace officer, and protectors of the general public. The overall theme of his speech is that we ask too much of our officers and that things will only be fixed if we fix the root causes of so many societal issues.

I'm quite sure many Republicans listened to an entirely different speech where he bashed officers and stood up for the "thugs" of the Black Lives Matter movement, but I surely hope that he got across to some of those people in the middle who want to respect our police, but also understand that there are deep societal divides in this country and there's no black and white answer when it comes to how to fix them.

I'll update this thread whenever the official White House page posts the entire proceedings on their YouTube channel.

One of the most incredible speeches I have ever heard. It surpasses his break in convention speech. My wife asked me if it was extemporaneous or prepared. I said the verbiage and construction is typical of a brilliant mind like Obama's. It has every right to be recognized as a monument beginning to unite USAmericans against hateful actions, organizations and organizers. Strictly my personl problem was the esoteric reference to unrest when he could have identified livlihood.

I watched the speech and yes I agree. It was another memorable speech by Obama. I read somewhere that this is a speech he wrote entirely himself...perhaps minimal help from speech writers. These type of speeches always bring out the best in Obama as they are given with such sincerity and empathy. The audience listened intently. I haven't seen any Republican reaction to it yet.

With respect to the 'police being asked to do too much because the rest of government or society doesn't do its job,' all that largely revolves around Deficit Terrorism and/or neoliberal ideology. I don't know how long we can go on living with a government, press, and mass democracy that all seem to think the government can or has run out of US dollars to spend for public purpose. This inexorably will lead to more dead cops and civilians. We are at war with ourselves. Austerity is anti-police.

"all seem to think the government can or has run out of US dollars to spend for public purpose."

Carlitos, Ability to spend is not the problem. The right wing has turned public opinion against spending except for right wing projects. Spending is an economy. We are destroying the economy. Austerity is anti economy. An economy by definition is spending.

Speeches don't fix anything; Obama's 9th speech at an funeral; did it help? Are there less guns on the street? Up to the next killing. Amen

I finally was able to find a good YouTube video of the entire speech. I encourage everyone to watch it and then try to say they aren't moved by the Presidents remarks.

Public opinion supports progressive public policy and spending for public purpose. The problem is they think the government is broke and can't spend without raise taxes. Both parties are responsible for that misinformation, and arguably the Democrats are more responsible because they are more articulate.

    I agree 100% that "Austerity" is anti-economy.

I actually enjoyed his speech for the first few minutes anyway, until he went off topic at the memorial for 5 slain police officers just to make political statements regarding gun control, even to include the killer of these officers in his speech plus the still ongoing investigation of the other shootings was just inappropriate at the least and disrespectful at it's worst. And to say that it's easier for a child to get a Glock than a computer is just ludicrous and outright lie.

He would have done the country a bigger service by telling the truth instead of kissing the cops asses like the rest of the country! If he had come out and said the truth that cops are dead because of the kill first ask questions later mentality, protect other cops at all expense to the truth, militarization of the police, bulling mentality and bigotry it might have made a difference. Instead, he took the easy, political way out and told us what heroes and wonderful people cops are and how they need our respect.

When cops give all the public respect they will finally earn the respect they feel they deserve, until then they better start looking over their shoulders 24/7 because a very huge segment of the population has finally become tired of being their subject of the hate, aggression and killing and are ready to fight back.

P.R. I repeat: Speeches don't fix anything; Obama's 9th speech at an funeral; did it help? Are there less guns on the street? Up to the next killing. Amen.

It is as you say ; militarization of the police and stupid antique gun laws; which no one dares to touch

Thanks for the hate rant because that is what we truly need ,,more hate talk because it accomplishes so much,, but it is not a large segment of the population that hates and disrespects our Law Enforcement Officers as you suggest but very a small vocal minority mainly in the large urban areas where crime is very high in their communities so there is a lot more police contact, many of these so called disenfranchised people are there merely to act out their aggression's and it has very little to do with cops killing civilians.

When is the right time to talk about the inherent racial biases in many of our nations police forces? It is impossible to overlook the fact that the officers were killed during a **peaceful** Black Lives Matter protest. Was he just supposed to brush over that fact?

I figured that conservatives would hear an entirely different speech than the one he actually gave because conservatives hear what they want to hear and not what is actually said.

No, it is not. It's also easier to get a glock than a fresh apple in many of our inner cities too.

Sorry JC but it reality, hate has nothing to do with it. Your response only highlights what the problem is and why, until your bros in blue wake up, things are not about to change.

When society needs police to police the police, we are in deep shit. Personally I'm wearing my Wellies from now on!

Pr. you honestly believe that less than 2% of the police who go and do things against the oath of their office represents the other 98%, you also refuse to believe the stats that bear that out,so if it's not hate or bias that you show and post about , then what is it?
