Called iCompare, this is a study to see if medical residents could be more efficient with longer hours on duty during residency. The residents have overall longer hours and then the program will be evaluated to see if care is more effivient or not. The official position is with shorter shifts there is more time spent handing over patients. Longer hours keep the doctors more in tune with patients. Seems an odd way for a comparison. I would think that shorter shifts with relieving shift coming in early to overlap would give better continuity of care. Longer shifts with longer off times would have a chance for dramatic changes in patients conditions. Thereby giving the new shift more to catch up on.
