As a matter of fact, I personally know some poor lawyers. I'm friends with a couple public defenders and I can guarantee you they are overworked and underpaid. They do it because they love their job and love helping those who get swept up in our out of control criminal justice system. Not every lawyer is part of a defense firm that Fortune 500 companies keep on retainer.
The vast majority of lawyers in this country are swimming up a shit creek of debt without a paddle. Most of them will never see the inside of a court room and most of them will never run their own practice. A small fraction of lawyers in this country become what you would consider rich. That's just a fact.

Drumpf is not a JAG lawyer; he's a billionaire who inherited his billions from his rich daddy.
JAG lawyers are uniformed military officers and don't have jobs outside of the service because they aren't allowed to have jobs outside of the service. There are certain lawyers within the military that are part of the reserves, but they play more of an advisory role in different military trials.
I can pretty much guarantee you there are zero JAG reservists working on GITMO trials...which I remind you is what this thread is about.

Who am I defending by explaining how things work in this country and by pushing back against people who insist everything this country does is a grand conspiracy to take over the world?
I hate to inform you, but you also live on this "island." The great thing about this island is that there's an airport every 60 miles or so and since we're not a dictatorship then you can just drive to one of them and leave without anyone stopping you.
Trust me--there's millions upon millions of people on this globe who would love to take your place and not bitch about how bad they have it here.
Dutch Wrote: You've got no idea of how your tax money is squandered. I've had my head checked many times; how about yours? You are still a young guy and has yet to learn on how the real world functions; you'll find out the hard way..
I know exactly how my tax money is spent because I spend a lot of time researching how my money is spent. Not on conspiracy websites, but on actual, peer-reviewed websites that explain in detail how my tax dollars are spent.
The Federal budget is broken into two brackets: mandatory and discretionary. Believe it or not, mandatory spending doesn't include the military and the military doesn't have the biggest budget in the Federal government. Social Security, Unemployment Benefits, and Medicare/Medicaid budgets dwarf the military budget.
Would I like to see the military budget shrunk even more and shift that money to education, scientific research, food and housing programs, and other priorities here at home? Absolutely. But to suggest I'm just a naive young chap who is clueless as to how this government and the real world works is laughable.
To get back to the discussion at hand. The original posting on this thread said that closing GITMO was a budgetary issue and I called bullshit. I've said a million times that I want GITMO closed, but I want it closed because I believe it's a civil rights issue.
GITMO is not, let me repeat NOT, staying open because some JAG lawyers like their free flights there and it's not staying open because some unnamed private contractor wants to keep overcharging for toilet seats. GITMO is still open because the Congress passed a law explicitly prohibiting the President from transferring any prisoner to American soil and no country wants any of the remaining prisoners.
How is that so hard to understand? It's just simple civics. We have a separation of powers. The President is not a king. The end (along with the end of my participation in this thread).
