There will be a noticeably empty seat in the First Lady's box to memorilaze the thousands upon thousands of victims of gun violence that have happened throughout his Presidency.

I know this is something the Right Wing crazies will (and already have) freak out about, but it will be a glaring reminder of the true cost of our out of control gun culture in this country. There's a mass shooting in America nearly every day of the week and, unlike every other industrialized country in the world, we are doing absolutely nothing about it.

This empty seat won't get the NRA to end their idiotic "guns don't kill people; people kill people" stance, but it will hopefully get more than a few people watching tonight to think about the real costs of letting an organization dedicated to arming Americans to the teeth.

Sorry Jared; an "empty seat" memory will be gone in a flash; the ignorant Trump clan will only buy more guns; it is their right, they claim. I've never seen or been in any country were an "Amendment" can not be "amended" to fit the 21th century ; only here the Constitution and "Bibles" are considered the same; don't touch it!!!

now, now, dutch. of course it can be amended. why, there have been amendments put forth to make it official that the u.s. is a christian nation, to state that marriage is between a man and a woman only (with the man occupying the prominent position obviously as scripture says), to permit state-sanctioned prayer in school and so on. i would not doubt that there have been amendments for a variety of other reasons but touching guns? while perhaps someone somewhere put one forth it obviously didn't and won't get anywhere. it is interesting in the area of originalism that jefferson favored said amendment re: bearing arms as, iirc, he said man will have his gun yet we have scalia ignoring the writings of jefferson and madison on the subject of religion.

Empty seat was a nice touch. Will it make any difference ? Absolutely not. I watched much of the speech last night. Mr. Obama is a phenomenal speaker. I liked the speech very much. I think he is a gifted communicator. Sadly we have gridlock because of idiot R's and a large tide of racists.
