What's going on in Chicago and other major cities is really sad.
I think people, especially the poor and people of color, don't trust the police. It's as simple as that. Decades, actually centuries, of overt and covert racism against people of color has created an "us vs them" mentality that won't be going away anytime soon. The people don't trust the police and the police don't treat the people like human beings. That's a recipe for disaster.
That explains why people are afraid to "snitch" on someone after a crime. They don't trust that the cops will keep them safe if they do. And when your life is on the line you will always default to whatever it is that will keep you alive. Why would anyone tell the police what they saw if they know the police won't protect them if they do?
I hate to say it, but the police brought this upon themselves in many of these large cities. This so called "war on drugs" that has locked up nonviolent "offenders" and ripped apart millions of families is coming back to bite us in the ass and then some. And instead of doing anything about it we keep digging our heads deeper and deeper into the sand and think that locking up a million more people will fix everything.
That, and you know things are really screwed up when it's easier to get your hands on a gun than it is to get your hands on fresh vegetables.
