during the reign of King Richard I in Chicago (1955 to 1976), there were allegations of some "voting irregularities", but shady politics in the City of Broad Shoulders goes back a lot further that that ..

Hinky Dink Kenna and John "Bathouse" Coughlin were Chicago aldermen at the dawn of the 20th century, and they allowed places like the Everleigh Club to flourish

Schmidt, and others, have expressed their frustration at low voter turnout on various threads on this site. During the 2014 mid-term elections, only 42% of the American public voted, the lowest turnout rate in more than 30 years (according to Al Jazeera) but it's actually worse than that. According to PBS, voter turnout in the 2014 mid-terms was 36.4 %, the lowest level since 1942, when a large portion of young American men were overseas fighting the Axis Powers.

This morning's Al Jazeera had some solutions to the problem, which the national Democratic Party should seize on with a vengeance.

Too many voters don't see much difference between Republicans and Democrats, so having Bernie Sanders in the race is actually a blessing for the Dems. As often as possible, they should also trot our Elizabeth Warren to remind our fellow Americans that there are REAL differences between the two parties, and there is absolutely NO reason to vote for any of the members of the Republican clown car.

I additionally support the "Donald" for the Independent Party, which may have the impact to drive a wedge into the Republican Party. All the better for my gal Hillary and the Democratic Party. Bernie may be genuine, but he is no Hillary, no woman, and no credible force in the world of politics. Bernie is an unknown around the world, but many and most foreign countries know Hilary. In part for having been an ex-Presidents Wife and a previous Secretary of State, Hillary has shook hands and parlayed with more dignitaries and diplomats than Bernie could ever achieve in his remaining years. As a American standing abroad, Hillary is Stateswoman, Ambassador and a World Leader. The Clintons Humanitarian Organizations are only helping Hillary's approach to being our next President. You go "girl"..............and forget the noise from Cruz, Trump, and all those Republicans........you go, "Girl".

Yes vote and vote early because Democrats must go to the polls in waves of rising support for the Democratic Party.

I have voted in every election except 2, when I was out of town. But in my state, the GOP have been known to infiltrate the Democratic Hdqtrs, taking over the process, & stealing the money for booze & parties. In the last 2 years, when I go to the Dem Hdqtrs, the same process appears to still be going on. The people there do not seem to have a genuine interest in meeting any "true" Democrats, every time you go there, the chairs do not appear to have been moved, since the last time, like nobody is having meetings, or telephone solicitations. The campaign buttons are all scratched & mangled, so nobody would ever buy any of them, and they refuse to order "new" undamaged ones, The chair table arrangements do not appear to be arranged for real meetings, or serving any purpose. It is all disorganized, & chaotic, & they certainly do NOT encourage anyone to really try to do the business of a campaign hdqtrs. (Many years ago, I made phone calls & tried to recruit people & to get people to vote, but they do not even try to do that now). If you call them, at a random time, they are in a bar, boozing up the $. My Red State is virtually all corrupted by GOP right-wingers, so gradually true Democrats have learned just to keep quiet & roll with the flow.

Corruption is rampant, every so often our GOP "officials" run off with the Public Housing Funds, & never go to jail. Millions of dollars "just disappear" -- & the guilty party never has to pay taxes on his sudden new wealth. Repairs to water facilities & public power are not always taken care of in a timely fashion. Sewer pipes are prone to burst occasionally. But even with it all, we do have a city that I enjoy living in, & it still has the facade of a fine, productive modern city. If only we had a few more progressive leaders elected, it could be almost a paradise. (Fair people & honest government can be priceless).

Eternal, you hit the nail on the head. Again I am fully aware that this country is run by money not principals; that is where the problem lies " grab as much as you can; then run as hell before you get shot by the people who "protect" you. Is anything yet normal in this country?

The differences between the two parties are finally starting show again to after a couple decades of it being basically impossible to tell the difference between the two parties and we can thank President Obama for that.

I hate to speak ill of Bill Clinton, but he was quite a conservative President. That may have been because he was President shortly after the Reagan revolution that convinced large swaths of the country that the government is the problem and not the solution to problems. I give him credit for trying to pass a Single-Payer healthcare system, but after that fell apart it was hard to tell the difference between him and the Republican's who controlled Congress at the time.

Things are different with President Obama. He sticks with his priorities and doesn't capitulate to the Republicans crazy demands. And he has ushered in a new civil rights movement in this country that will be felt for generations to come. He also has highlighted the clear differences between the Republican and Democratic parties. That will be felt for generations to come, as well.

The Democratic Party has been on a winning streak lately and has had some striking victories in the courts and at the ballot box. Gay marriage is the law of the land; Obamacare is here to stay; and we are finally starting to talk about real criminal justice reform and shining the light on police brutality. We still have a long way to go with the latter, but we will eventually get there. Regardless, the Democratic Party is finally finding its own footing and we are beginning to see clear cut differences between the two major parties for the first time in a generation.
