Dutch -- Yes our system of government is not perfect, and yes the two party system has its flaws. It has worked okay for the most part for 200 years, with ups and downs. It's what we have, and we're not going to change it, so bitching about it is wasted energy. What we need is an informed electorate that will vote in candidates that are willing to govern and compromise rather than obstruct. People vote their emotions rather than engaging in an intellectual thought process...that is when they're not staying home sitting on their asses.

I don't believe our government system is the problem. Rather it's the voters who vote in the dumb asses. My biggest contempt is for the people who don't vote. In the 2014 election, there were 144 million people who were otherwise eligible to register and vote and chose not to.

A few years ago (2010) I read a book, Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free

I think the author, Charles P. Pierce, pegged us pretty well. From the Amazon review:

    Book Description

The Culture Wars Are Over and the Idiots Have Won.

A veteran journalist's acidically funny, righteously angry lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States.

In the midst of a career-long quest to separate the smart from the pap, Charles Pierce had a defining moment at the Creation Museum in Kentucky, where he observed a dinosaur. Wearing a saddle... But worse than this was when the proprietor exclaimed to a cheering crowd, “We are taking the dinosaurs back from the evolutionists!” He knew then and there it was time to try and salvage the Land of the Enlightened, buried somewhere in this new Home of the Uninformed.

With his razor-sharp wit and erudite reasoning, Pierce delivers a gut-wrenching, side-splitting lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States, and how a country founded on intellectual curiosity has somehow deteriorated into a nation of simpletons more apt to vote for an American Idol contestant than a presidential candidate.

With Idiot America, Pierce's thunderous denunciation is also a secret call to action, as he hopes that somehow, being intelligent will stop being a stigma, and that pinheads will once again be pitied, not celebrated.

I think that sums it up pretty well. The problem isn't the government function. It's the people who elect the people who run our government.

Schmidt, sure but it paints only part of the picture; you are again forgetting the "money/corruption" side of elections; why do people stay home? Because they feel their voice is not heard anyway or they are fed up with "promises" and "dirty politics", which mostly affects the "little man" not the billionairs. They see politics as an disease which does not go away. So who cares if you vote or not; I won't be able to get a decent job or food on the table, regardless of who is running this country. This creates apathy; no way out for these people. As long as "money" determines who wins, I can imagine that even educated voters stay home.

Dutch -- Yes, some people don't vote because they are indeed fed up with the "dirty politics" as you call it. This is exactly the Republican strategy. Obstruct, obstruct, and make life miserable for the middle class...and then assign blame. The more people that are pissed off with our government and not voting, that's a win for Republicans. The Christian crusaders amongst the Republican voters will always show up and vote in large numbers at the polls because they believe passionately in their cause to make our government into a Christian nation. Despite polls showing that young people are embracing religion less and less, they do not vote in large numbers. Their block of puny votes matter very little in comparison to that of the crusaders.

The "money/corruption" is certainly a part of the broken process, but that process exists because the Republicans like it that way. The Dems have to play that game, otherwise they'll have even smaller numbers. We can trace the problem back to mid term elections and other elections in which a large part of the otherwise educated populace stays home and lets the "idiots" decide.

I will do my part again, ringing door bells and taking the message to the neighborhoods. My part will be miniscule by itself, but the more and more of us that do that, we can make a difference. I never give up hope, although I have to admit I was really down after the 2014 election. I'm ready to start all over again for Hillary's sake, and for all the other liberal/progressives that run and want to make a difference. Standing on the sidelines and bitching never wins any votes.

I bolded your last sentence because it's something I talk about with my progressive/liberal friends who have given up on voting in federal elections and only focus on local politics. It is true that all politics is local, but sitting out of national elections and allowing a small fraction of our country to pick and choose how the federal government functions affects us all.

I've always felt the country is a lot more blue than our current representation at the federal level reflects, but voter apathy and our rigged boundary system that gives outsized power to rural counties makes it seem as if the country is a lot more red than it really is.

Hillary is not my first choice, but if she is our candidate then I will join Schmidt in canvassing for her because anyone the Republicans nominate will take our country backwards and work to undo all the progress that we have made in President Obama's tenure. And if you question what progress was made then I encourage you to reflect back to what life was like during the Bush years--two wars with thousands of soldiers killed, tax cuts for the wealthy, divestment from the middle-class, and a catastrophic economic meltdown. And don't even get me started on the strides we have made on gay rights and other social issues in these past seven years.

If you want us to get back into the sectarian wars in the Middle-East, lower taxes on rich people, and see income inequality reach epic levels then sit out the 2016 elections. If you don't then listen to Schmidt and don't sit on the sideline and bitch--do something about it.

Jared/Schmidt, both your statements are correct; sure sitting on the sidelines irritates me as well, but I guess you don't know FL; all my neighbors are GOP; if I would canvas I probably get shot. If I would go to N. Ft. Myers, I would get shot too, but for different reasons. Then we have a Governor who is an evangelical thief and criminal who bought himself into that job and started a huge fight with the fed's about Obama care. Fanatics all around me like Baptists of all kind; a billion churches with GOP stickers, so I think you probably suggest I should move to China. Sure call me "negative"!!!

I know it is hard to realize reality; but the US is going down the drain rapidly; it is already too late to turn this Titanic around. You have no clue on how the rest of the world views the US today; it is more negative than ever. The whole of Europe is now being flooded by refuge's; they are thanking the US for that for sure, Just getting a new captain on a sinking ship does not help.

In reading various media sites about Hillary Clinton, and why people don't support her, the most common reason seems to be: "I don't trust her". It's a talking point repeated over and over again. It's like a Pavlovian response...automatic.

So what comes to your mind when those of you say that you don't trust her. Give me some anecdotes. Do you have to pause and think about it?

No, Schmidt ,I don't need a pause; it is simple: she's a Washington insider; knows all the political tricks in the book; knows how to "wash" her hands; knows how to manipulate the established bunch in the Washington environment. It is that simple.

Every one of you has made some great points. You have to stick your neck out, if you canvas for voters in your own neighborhood. It sounds harmless until you realize that the lunatic fringe GOP are all gun nuts, and they have a gut wrenching desire to "hate" all liberals. NONE have been told that the Founding Fathers were all liberals. No telling what junk will be found now, in our kids Text Books, which will most likely be raising more devoted little Birchers & brain-washed little knee-jerk fascists, who learn NO science, and a perverted sense of History, and a skewed type of Reality. HOW DO YOU UN-DO THAT? It has actually been going on behind our backs for a whole Generation or two. Who really noticed how the News has been gradually perverted, (like Fox News) giving a totally false vision of the world and reality? The Net Result is that at least a generation of our kids are brain-washed little robots, who will echo pure nonsense, thinking it is so cute and so funny, and "popular." Who cares about being RIGHT, and knowing the TRUTH, when you can be a "Winner" and so Popular by acting like a total FOOL, and being Proud to be Stupid? Gee Whiz, Mommie, the most popular kids in the school can't spell, can't reason, can't think logically, & everybody in the class applauds them, & votes them in as class leader. (But if you are great in logic and debate, they jeer you & push you aside, like a rotten apple).

Sports trumps intellect, all of the time. The Teacher's internal "bias" is critical, to how the class is taught, - & many schools, even religious schools, are teaching what the Right Wing wants them to teach. After all, as Donald Trump says, he has Tons of Money, & can BUY the results he wants. Many of our school text books come from Dallas, where the right - wing Bias has been going on since the (1963) murder of JFK ---50 years ago. THEY HAD ALREADY brain-washed the school kids to think JFK was a Communist 50 yrs ago. (Read: Claire Conner's book -- "Wrapped in the Flag" (2013) Beacon Press). She was in college in Dallas & went to see the motorcade go by. Fifteen minutes later, JFK was dead. Her parents were leaders in the John Birch Society (JBS) & she knew how the right-wing hated JFK. Her father was on the JBS National Council, She herself suspected the JBS had killed JFK. Her father said to shut up & get a lawyer.

(Robt Welch, leader of the Birch Society, wrote into his 1958 BLUE BOOK (members manual) that "he believed JFK was a Communist" & s/b stopped). SO THE PROOF HAS BEEN THERE ALL THE TIME. (Birchers were a subversive organization, set up to destroy the legitimate US Govt, & install right wingers). And they did not intend to "wait" for yrs & yrs of legitimate elections, when they could arrange to takeover much faster, by murder). Birchers are Communists. And now, they are the modern day TEA PARTY. (Financed by the KOCH brothers, whose Father was trained in Soviet Russia, by "Communist" Dictator - Stalin).

The Republican Party = the John Birch Society = The TEA PARTY = ALL ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY --- financed by the communist KOCH BROTHERS.

And the common factor among ALL of them, is OIL // Bush & Cheney & all the OIL millionaires are involved in this international conspiracy, & they do NOT CARE how much the oil spills destroy our water supply, or ruin our country, or if their WARS bankrupt our country, because Communists do not care about America, they are much more devoted to Russia, & Communist countries. That is why they will ALWAYS insist we have Warfare in the Middle East, because that gives them easy access to ALL the OIL WELLS in those countries. That is the only thing important to Bush & Cheney & the KOCHS. /// Remember That. And never let them make you believe that JEB Bush is any different. (He can play the clown, & speak some Spanish, --- but he is just like the rest of them).

PROMETO LEALTAD A LA BANDERA, DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDAS DE AMERICA --- Y A LA REPUBLICA QUE ELLA REPRESENTA -- UN NACION CON DIOS --- QUE GARANTIZA LIBERTAD Y JUSTICIA PARA TODOS. (The Pledge of Allegiance to America) -- in Spanish. After 4 years of study, I also can speak a few phrases in Spanish --- but unless your heart is in it, -- they are just empty words. I TRULY MEAN IT. ---- but does millionaire oil man Bush?

About TRUSTING HILLARY ----- Of course we can trust Hillary ---- for God's sake, she has been First Lady of Arkansas, she has been a Lawyer, she has been a Senator in New York, she has been First Lady of the United States (under her husband, President Bill Clinton), she has been Secretary of State, for President Obama, & now she is probably the most qualified woman in the World to be PRESIDENT of the United States. NOBODY IS NEARLY as QUALIFIED AS HER.

The Right Wingers have NOBODY who could fill those shoes. (Who? ---- Sarah Palin? ---- ha ha ha) --- Or Michelle Bachmann? ---- ha ha ha). They do not even have anybody qualified to be Hillary's Maid. -- Sarah Palin needs a teleprompter to request her breakfast menu. She doesn't even know what magazines she reads. And in the Bush Family, their most qualified speaker is Mama Barbara Bush, who famously said: "America has already had enough Bushes."

Eternal, I repeat; you live in a dream world; politicians remain what they are; the same as your preacher who sells snake oil.

I agree with eternal. Hillary is the most qualified, and I will be one of her volunteers. If being a Washington insider disqualifies you to be president, then that would knock out both Hillary and Bernie...plus a bunch of Republicans. I guess that leaves Donald Trump as the "least Washington Insider." Is that who you support Dutch? Ha! Oh I forgot Carly.

Schmidt, sure she is the most qualified, I don't deny that. The point is as I said the danger exists that it will become the same old "buddy" hookup and the culture will be as always, follow the money, the generals, the same advisors and of course the arrogance of Washington.

I wished we had a "miracle" candidate, but until now I don't see that happening. Bernie I consider just a runner up. The rest of them are just in it for their ego's, and may be get connections on the "money" side so they can improve their status..
