Patrick Smith has a very timely piece in Salon about the fallacy of American excptualism, patriotism and where this country is going. It's a must read, unfortunately, most of us here already know and understand what is happening but perhaps a few "uninformed" citizens will read it and see the light!

pgr -- Wow and thanks. I'm going to buy the book. And yes Appy is preaching to the choir, but I identify with most everything he says.

Yes PGR & Schmidt; I've been preaching the same thing. One thing I don't get, why start with the Vietnam war? I guess the stupidity started way before that, with the Cuba and Korean debacle; We are still paying fortunes for Korea right now and have still troops there since the 1950's; Cuba ( bay of "pigs") was a total flop, because of that FL is flooded with Cubans and since we don't allow sugar imported from there, we are now poluting our Everglades and beaches with our owm sugar industry.( Cause and effect) Appy's books won't change much; you are either "indoctrinated" or " it's God's will" in this country; my feeling especially with the mess in the middle east and our noses stuck into it to our eyeballs, then the message is "we will never learn" and can't reform the world to our "model" which is flawed all the way.

I would go further back in time to the Spanish-American War of 1898. That war largely instigated by the Hearst newspapers after the sinking of the USS Maine gave Americans a "feel good" experience about American imperialism as we acquired Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines , and "Cuba independence" from Spain in the Treat of Paris. It's never been the same since...American exceptionalism was born.

i would go back farther than that. exceptionalism is tribalism on steroids. from various bronze age empires to rome to a particular semitic tribe to fill-in-the-blank empire grown out of the rubble of the middle ages and westphalia it is always about one group claiming superiority over another(s).

america has reached, if not passed, a crossroads. its military no longer can sustain its commercial empire. its commercial empire has furthermore been irreversibly damaged by short-termism, political corporatism wherein the state bends to the will of the corporation and the coming collapse of the westphalia system particularly for large geographic nation-states. the world is reverting to china being the dominant economy as it was for millennia. the fossil fuel underpinning of the industrial revolution bubble is eroding and the bubble will burst. when it does...

...watch the shitstorm. it will unlike anything we have ever seen. hopefully i won't be around when it happens. but if we keep walking the pat we are walking it will get here all the quicker.

Yes Lonely; indeed America is at the crossroads of whatever "shitstorm" ; if Ted Cruz is running for President that should be enough of a message that we are in downward spiral.

What suprises me is that regardless of all the modern tools these stupid "christian" kids refuse to do research about the total nonsense preached to them. Even applaud a total idiot who thinks he's a "god" himself; Indeed this country is going downhill in a rapid tempo.

What's even crazier is the very science that created cell phones and computers is the very science that proves there's no god. It's the same math. They can't even make that connection. Typing away and blogging about the spooky guy on the very devices that mathematicians created.. Science is respected and accepted in technolgy and medicine......and completely dismissed when it addresses climate and mytholgy. IDIOTS
