Washington Post, December 29, 2014: Neil deGrasse Tyson explains why his Christmas tweet wasn’t ‘anti-Christian’

On Christmas Day Tyson tweeted: “On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642.”

That tweet put the Christian right wingers into a hissy fit, prompting some additional tweets by Tyson to explain his position, one of which read:

“Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA).”.

You can read about it at the Washington Post. It would appear that Tyson has provoked the Christian right into making absurd statements and accusations against Tyson, but why? In one sense they seem to be acting like the Muslim community when their Prophet Mohammed is maligned?

Or maybe it's just Neil deGrasse Tyson himself and his much despised Cosmos series that promotes science and evolution.

    Whatever...it's revealing.

Schmidt, These two statements are great; On Christmas Day Tyson tweeted: “On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642, and: “Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA).” I don't see anything wrong with that. I think Newton did more for the world than a hippy middle east preacher.

Some people just like to get their panties in a bunch and then let everyone know how and why they feel offended, Mr. Neil Degrasse is a learned scientist, did someone actually think that he would espouse a certain religion over science. Again , some people just like to hear themselves complain.

They complain because he is correct. They complain because they have no faith. The moment at which they feel attacked is a display of how much faith they have.....NONE.

I think the ole Bard himself got it right ,when he said "Methinks the lady doth protests too much", these so called people of Faith are not strong in their Faith and they feel threatened because they don't have any answers to the questions posed by Dr. Degresse, Dr. Dgresse is no threat to anyone but the uninformed and those who choose to remain ignorant, I embrace his theories as to me they further prove the existence of God.

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is in his own right perfectly right in his belief, but it is not shared throughout the world. Dr. Tyson may have all the eloquent words of science, but he will admit it is not proven as a fact and he is among other brilliant scientists that will say Dr. Tyson doesn't know what he is talking about. Just like religion where many tangents of thought exist. We will believe what we are comfortable to believe in with hope for an eternal life with our heavenly Father. Today a good message was in the newspaper by Billy Graham, who I enjoy reading each morning and he spoke on "Faith". "The Christian faith isn't just a set of beliefs or a list of rules, it's a personal relationship with the Living God".

Dr. Tyson is comfortable in his belief of science, which I am entertained by his publicity and discussions on things I cannot explain. Since I am comfortable in my belief, I assume that one day, Dr. Tyson and I will merge in thought, meeting to read Billy Graham together. Dr. Tyson and I are mere beings swimming in this pool of humanity and on a given day will exclaim in unison..................oh! that's how it works! That is why I am comfortable in my faith with my heavenly Father.

What cannot co-exist science and faith ? Sure they can, some even had said that science itself is a faith, but anyway , why can't the two be compatible, man is always searching to prove or disapprove the existence of God, Why, no one really knows, but if you look at the splendor of the Universe in all its complexities with other galaxies, nebula's ,there just has to be a higher power, this cannot be just random, what you call fiction I believe is called faith, the belief in something that the human mind cannot comprehend, if you look into your own body with the all of different cells and the symbiosis needed to exist, this is not random, there is a purpose and I choose to believe in the triune God to help me and guide me thru this mortal life.

    AMC,
Please, if you can.... name all the astro physicists that disagree with his "opinion"
You see, this guy ain't your gardner. For you to even comment that his belief is just an opinion in theory, then I ask that you show me you credentials in astro physics.
I never tell a baker that his cookies are theory, especially since I don't know how to bake. You dismiss his data as simply being an opinion as if somehow both of you have a 50/50 split on the matter. He is an astro physicist.....You, TD Jakes, The Pope (POOP), your priest...or anyone else behind those silly robes have ZERO credentials to even comment on his work.
I'd sure like to see your math on the whereabouts of heaven, please show me your research..... a map, coordinance, gps...something????
How about your own equations?? Show me your work.
There's plenty of math in support of his work. You sir are an engineer.....You've taken upper division math, calculus, chemistry, etc.. You had to prove your work then.....Was your degree at MIZZOU an opinion? Was the work not neccessary??
I would very much like to see your math regarding the parting of the Red Sea....that should be easy for the guys who know how life began....Oh, the virgin birth...I need to see that. There isn't a mathematician on earth who's been able to figure that out......But you know.???

Believers spend a whole lot of time commenting on what is already known, but never bless us with their own work and research.

    JC,
Whatever scientists choose to investigate they seek an answer based on the data they've discovered. The existence of a god isn't part of that research. As much as you'd like to believe that scientists wake up every morning and say " Today, Im going to continue disproving god"....God isn't a factor.

You say' "no one really knows"....If that's true then why do you insert god into the equation. If no one knows...they say, I DON'T KNOW.
Zealots never comment on the UNKNOWN...only what is known. Everyday brings new data that confirms the current data.....you present ZERO DATA.
As I asked AMC, show us your work because clearly you disagree with the current Data and should be able to provide your own data in support of your claims.

Science and myth will never coexist......As much as you would like them to...NEVER

As astrophysicist go, none of them hold all the answers and as they rely on science and math that is their crutch that appears to hold them up in esteem and importance in the world. Where we in faith go, there is no math or science. It is as it is, "faith". I would advise don't even try to disprove our faith, you would be wasting your time. As all those scientists, astrophysicist and highly degreed professionals try as hard as they can, there will always be someone who disproves their findings. Even Einstein has been disproved in many of his theoretical concepts and why? Because his math and ideas was proved wrong. As humanity evolves we will be disproving many of Dr. Tysons findings. Science only sees what they want to see and can explain. It's the unexplainable things that makes us stand in awe of the glory of God's presence. Faith is a strength as it is a relationship with the heavenly Father. I'm sorry, I don't have any answers you seek. Some things you have to accept on faith. Ask God, when you meet HIM, I'm sure He has all the answers.

Maybe so.....but Albert Einstein was in the Ball park. They've disproven a lot of what Darwin said...but he pointed us in the right direction....and that was just on his observations. Albert Eintein was also correct on much of his theories...not bad for almost 100 hundred years ago.
The Pope (poop), TD Jakes, your priest and the rest of the robed alter boy worshippers gave humanity a wrong start.

Yup, we hold these scientists in high regard because they deserve it. They're smarter than you and I. They gave us micro wave ovens, cell phones, computers, automation, medicine. Infact...just about everything. A snowball that keeps getting bigger and bigger.
The Pope (poop) gave me a headache, a manual on deceit, and a housefull of pedophiles..... Hmmm, who holds more credibility? KNOWLEDGE v. NONSENSE.

Again, if it's unexplainable, why insert god..... trust me, I'm not trying to change your mind. We need bad examples out there, to show people good examples.
Believers are needed to prove just how wrong were.

L.A. why waste your efforts on these people; just believe what you yourself want to believe; J.C. and AMC both live in la la land and want to stay there; I wish them a lot of success; at least in "their hereafter" you don't need brains because these are dead meat then anyway and left behind as dog food.

LA: , never is an absolute, most scientists don't believe in absolutes because there is always something else, they search for infinity and they will never find it, much like Christians today who believe in their God although they will not see him in this life they believe in that there is something else. Science and Faith go hand in hand, they may think they serve different gods but they don't , its all about faith in what you do and for what reason. If my belief in the Triune God allows me to have faith in what others may do to benefit me, then why can't I believe that thru His Grace he allowed these men to make these great innovations in all of the sciences to benefit all of God's children, for you to believe otherwise is your right as well as your choice, as is mine is to believe.

I'm not attempting to change your mind. But when great minds are discredited or minimized in order to make a square peg fit in a circle....you may want to either change your thoughts or take a new approach
Spooky guy never allowed any innovations because science never stops moving. From Betamax to Bluray. With you reasoning God allowed us to watch videos but he he started us out with Betamax. He created cancer and allowed it to kiil you years after diagnosis. He allowed medicine to beat it, Oh no, then it comes back and kills you anyway.
It's this type of reasoning that makes a belief in any deity infantile.. I don't choose to not believe. I choose to believe in fact. I would love to live on forever and be with fallen family and friends......But that's not gonna happen. I accept the truth. I pick door number 2....absolute nothingness......Why? because I'm mean bitter non believer,,,No sir. I have no choice in the matter. I must accept that.

have comfort in knowing that there is no memory, no pain, no regrets, no nothing when you're non-existent.
I often wonder why mommy's take thousands of photos (family, vacations, friends).....why do we take photos, In a couple of generations no one in your lineage is really gonna give shit about your trip to disneyworld a 50 years earlier.....Life moves on and we are forgotten fairly quickly.....So, go out there and be with hookers, smoke dope, eat what you want,,,,live life the way you want to.....It doesn't matter in the big picture.
