About the singer (famous Hawaiian musician & singer): Israel (Izzy) Kamakawiwo'ole
He was born in Oahu on May 20, 1959, and died in Honolulu, June 26, 1997 -- he died from severe respiratory problems (from obesity) at age 38.
He became famous in 1993, with the release of the record "Facing Future" containing a medley of the songs "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World." .The whole day of his funeral, the Hawaiian flag was flown at half mast. His body was laid within the Capitol Bldg in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him. Later, his ashes were publicly scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach.
Izzy was also remembered for being one of the last full-blooded Hawaiians,
who was always smiling and optimistic, and was particularly appreciated for the enormous love he felt for his land and his people. He has been gone 17 yrs now, & it is certain that his music will be his immortality.
