The Pakistani Taliban attacked a military-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar and slaughtered at least 141 people, 135 of them children, in apparent retaliation for the killings of their own relatives by the Pakistani army earlier this year.

This is a terrible tragedy and one that should be condemned by everyone regardless of their political viewpoints. Purposefully sunning down children and teenagers in a tit-for-tat way is abhorrent and goes against every rule of warfare there is.

Speaking of warfare, we often forget that Pakistan is engaged in a civil war. It is not on the news, because our media tends to not really want to pay attention to those kinds of things, but Pakistan has been on the brink of becoming a failed state for quite some time. The most recent conflict began in early 2004 and has continued unabated for the past decade. This tragedy is just another in a long line of tragedies that has hit Pakistan since the war began.

This bombing also brings up the topic of moral equivalency. While it is despicable that these Taliban fighters slaughtered these children and teachers, is it not just as despicable that the Pakistani Army has been killing thousands of women and children in Northwest Waziristan? Do the lives of the 48,000 unarmed civilians who have been killed in that region not matter as much as the 141 children who lost their lives in today's tragedy?

I am by no means justifying today's terrorist attack, but I am trying to explain that war is not just the 'good guys versus the bad guys.' It is a tragedy whenever a civilian dies in any conflict and both sides should do whatever it takes to keep that from happening. But, we also must remind ourselves, that war is hell and bad things happen in wars.

The United States has taken sides in this conflict and the media coverage has been largely reflective of the side we took. That is not what the rest of the world sees though. The war in Pakistan is an extremely complicated and terribly sad example of what happens in a civil war that lasts over a decade. It is not, as I said, the good versus the bad.

They should have unleashed our troops when they were there.....we could have turned the taliban into tomorrows fossils. It would have probably only took a couple of cities but they would have gotten the message..We could have named theses holes in the ground...BEDROCK

Theres no place on earth for people who do this

I agree with your last sentence, but how did the whole 'unleash our troops' thing work out in Afghanistan? It is a failed state after almost fifteen years of American involvement. Not just that, the country is now the largest opium distributor on Gods Green Earth.

Northwest Waziristan is a brutally mountainous region that is pretty much impossible for our troops to access. They can be bombed to oblivion, but then these types of shootings happen in retaliation for those bombings. Like I said--it's the question of moral equivalency. Nearly 50,000 civilians in Pakistan have been killed by American drones and Pakistani troops. This is a war and war is hell. We chose our side, but there will always be retaliation and consequences for the actions the American and Pakistani military takes.

I agree with you on this, one of the he reason why we don't do what is necessary and that is to bomb back to the era that they chose to live in, which nis the stone Age ,is because of the political ramifications, anytime that political needs trump the military needs for ending the conflict , this is a disaster in the making. War is the result of the failure of politicians to reach a solution , Generals then fight their wars for them, never mix the two , war is for Generals not politicians, just consider the results of what political considerations and meddling have wrought, Vietnam, Korea, the mess in the Middle East, plus numerous idle incursions that have resulted in nothing more than lost lives, Somalia comes to mind. Either the US takes a firm stance against these monsters and kill them wherever they can find them or stay out of it. War is not about negotiating, it's about inflicting the most pain on a nation until they realize the only way to end the pain is to negotiate, then in steps the politicians. Winston Churchill it has been reported that when English broke the Nazi radio codes that he allowed an entire city to be bombed to ensure that the Nazi's did not find out that they had broken the code, lately our leaders have some insane notion that we allow the enemy to know of our planes in advance in hopes that it will frighten them into negotiating. Allow the military to do the job that we as nation pay them for, we spend billions of dollars on war tools (toys) , so allow them to use them, very seldom do you ever hear of a fighter having an ongoing conversation with his opponent during the fight. There is a good reason for it, it causes the fighter to lose focus on the job at hand.

What about the place on earth for the people who kill 50,000 innocent women and children? Where do they belong? Does God have a special place in heaven for them because they are on 'the right' and not 'the wrong' side? Does God not care about those 50,000 dead women and children because America chose the other side and they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? War is hell and one action is typically met with a reaction.

I get that Jared.....innocent people will die. But we never really unleashed our troops.....I would have turned those mountains into dust. That would have let everyone know what was coming. Our government played these stupid games at the cost of so many people.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended that war. When you see a city go up in a plume of smoke, you know the games are over. Surrender or everyone dies. That ultimatum usually convinces people that it's over.

It would take hundreds of billions of dollars worth of bombs to turn those mountains into dust. This is one of the most treacherous places on earth. No amount of soldiers would be able to handle a place like that. Add in the fact that the people living there have been there for thousands of years and know the terrain like the back of their hand and we would be sending our soldiers into a situation where they would be sitting ducks. It would basically bankrupt our country if we were to try to bomb that small place into oblivion.

That was when we were the only country who had atomic weapons. That singular act ushered in the Atomic Arms race and fifty years of the Cold War. Our Government stopped investing in the people and infrastructure and instead built as many bombs and weapons of war as we could. We also now have a military industrial complex that controls half of the American budget to make sure we can always wipe out the world at a moments notice. We stopped investing in education, our middle class, and the people themselves. Did the ends really justify the means there? Especially since we had Japan on her heels and would have eventually won the war with conventional means if we were just patient?

We also must remember that Pakistan is a nuclear armed state that wouldn't hesitate to retaliate if we decided to drop some nuclear bombs on them. India and China would then undoubtedly get involved because those are the countries that Pakistan would drop their nuclear bombs on. I'm sure Russia would feel the need to have their say in that matter, as well. Before you know it, we are having a nuclear war that wipes out billions of people because 145 people were killed at a school in Northwest Pakistan.

When I saw the documentary "Restreppo" I couldn't believe these savages were mad at a cow being killed.... they brought in a Major to settle this dispute.
Their kids are dying, clearly they needed someones help.....and they're disputing a cow. If you saw the documentary you could see the frustration of our soldiers...all that fire power and they got these kids up on a hill defending an outpost with M-16s..... That's not trying to kill the enemy. That's bullshit.

Kill everyone or never go there in the first place. It amazes me. We could have beat them easily.....2 cities and they would have realized that there would be no Taliban.....they would have gotten the message.

Again people forget who has been the cause of this; people here will not like what I'm going to say,but it is the US!!! Due to the fact that we've been going after the Taliban for more than 12 years, they "spread" to the Pakistan border, where we are hitting them with our drones all the time. So that is how the word revenge works. We also gave lots of money to Pakistan to fight them. This is the result of our invasion in Afghanistan; the Russians were smart and left. I said many times "bombs" and "drones" are never a solution; food and education are. The same applies here. We think we can solve the worlds problems purely with money and bombs that is where the problem lies.

This is the result of two groups of idiots fighting fantasy based myths.....it's time for god to go away. He can't even balance a check book.

L.A. sure, but it is always, even here, power over the people!! Relgious or not; how can I force my will onto others?; make them scared; Churches, Dictators, Rebels. terrorists etc. have been doing that for centuries, even our police!

Dutch, exactly. But I don't care who it is....you walk into a school and wipe out a bunch of kids (your own) like it's a sunday stroll.....I'm sorry, but you gotta go.
You have to leave earth ....regardless of what religion, party, belief or any other reason. You gotta go.
Thank AMC's God I'm not in control....I'd kill every last one standing......every single zealot on this earth would have to go. Nothing personal...you just have to go.....Change only occurs when change occurs. Enough is enough.

The human race don't stand a chance if this continues. Somebody has to go. Common sense has to kick-in at some point....And for all these religious crazies....we have a place for you....it's called vaporized for eternity.
They want to meet, adorne, protect and represent this omnipresent being....Hey, lets send them there.....Nobody wants to go to heaven on the express highway. Why is that???
If there was any factual evidence o0f a god, I would have checked-out years ago....why is it the one's who believe the most want to stick around? for what?

This is my first comment on this topic. These weak SOB's should be infested with a very ripe batch of the Ebola virus. Or send in seal team 6 with flame throwers and torch their asses. Then leave a message that if children are hurt or killed again, the response will be far worse. This is the actions of cowards.
