    The Situation in Hell

    An essay

    .
.....The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

....Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

....Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following…
    .

.... First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

....As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.

....With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

....1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

....2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

    ....So which is it?

....If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "It will be a cold day in Hell before I go out with you", and take into account the fact that I went out with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

....The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore extinct… leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being, which explains why last night Teresa kept shouting "Oh, my God!".
    .

....This student received the only "A".

When you all get to "hell" let us know the answers. That's if you can find a phone to call somebody........that's "hell" by itself.

I suspect Hell will be much more fun than Heaven, particularly if there are NO believers there!

This is a very interesting post. Unfortunately I believe it has no simple answer. First of all, Human bodies don't go to Heaven or Hell. (( We don't know for sure if there is a Heaven or Hell )) If those places exist, it's only souls that go there. In my view, a soul is equal to a 3" x 5" piece of rice paper. The whole burning sinners issue is not like a bonfire with 8 billion cords of wood..... I believe that's symbolism. In simpler times they needed to represent something horrible. I think if there is a Hell, the replacement for actual flames is any generic form of misery. Hell, there could be flames also.... I / nobody knows. But I think the detriment that religions use to get people to not be bad is that if you end up there, you'll suffer a lot. Actual burning ? I don't know. There are a lot of ways to hurt and suffer.

Very interesting post though pgr. Good job !

Hell is not located yet; but I'm affraid it must be on earth all over the place done by people who believe in "heaven" for themselves and then throw bombs on other thinking people who then end up in hell on earth. I only wonder how it is possible that these bomb throwers are "blessed" by their churches and flag waving people. I think they belong in hell themselves, if it would exist, frozen over or not.

I know a few married people who are always telling me "Life is Hell". Not sure what they are saying but none of my single friends ever say that.

Thanks PGR; it shows that even youth here gets sidetracked. Tony; my point is quite simple; once you are dead everything stays on this earth and goes into the recycle bin. Nothing leaves a dead body; so there is nothing to burn nor play the fiddle on Mars without hands or a brain; unless you made a backup of your brain; put it ona CD and FedEx it to..........? Ask the Russians may be they can help with a rocket. Sorry, "hell" is on earth for a lot of people.

The concept of Hell always fascinates me. The idea that I must follow a book that was written hundreds of years after the death of Jesus or face eternal damnation is hard for me to accept. Jesus never talked about hell; Jesus talked about fighting the rich and helping the poor, which is pretty much the exact opposite of how a typical modern day Christian behaves. If anyone is going to hell, I have a feeling that it will be many supposedly righteous people who use religion as an excuse to justify police brutality and racial hatred.

I'm hedging my bets that just being a good person who helps the poor, destitute, and sick will keep me from facing an eternity of torture, but who knows? If there's a God out there who is that jealous and vengeful that he condemns people who don't follow a book that Constantine's First Council of Nicaea hobbled together over a thousand years ago as an addendum to the Torah then I'd rather not meet him in the first place.

I was initially playing with the member....but for me...it's taking a survey about fantasy....just as if someone asked me to take a survey about who's a better super hero....who cares, they're fictional.
I was just kidding around with the guy,,,,religion has got me wore out. It's getting harder to respond to that topic

Why waste your energy on such dribble on hell? I can give you a decision to make. You come to a fork in the road. To the left is hell where eternal damnation exists for bad people, people of questionable behavior and character that you just would not like to sit at the bar with. To the right is heaven where eternal bliss and joy exists for those people deemed good and acceptable under the faiths of our God. To the left is a terrible prison with much pain and to the right is life endowed with many gifts of enjoyment, no pain, and pools of splendor. Now doesn't that sound like it is better to discuss Heaven than hell? Nobody should aspire to go to hell for if they do, they will weep and gnash their teeth upon arriving.

AMC, as usual you'r mistaken; there is no "fork" in the road, neither that you can drive a car up there or have a GPS. Once you're real "dead" you won't even see a "fork" only pure blackness; you won't go anywhere except six feet under. that is the real end. Science has proved that nothing at all leaves your dead body; once the oxygen is depleted in your brain then your brain is totally dead and all storage of any data is gone forever. So simply said there is no "heaven' nor "hell" or judgement as is being preached by the "snake oil" sellers unless you can prove such by interviewing "real dead" people.

Of course, you should know Dutch, you've been there haven't you? Now we attempt to indicate or prove that science is the only truth for us? How accurate has science been historically? For every theory, law and postulate that has ever been developed, there has been and there will be a redaction. So, in that case, science is not so perfect, is it? Science cannot explain the eternal life issue, because heck we haven't even broken the light speed barrier with our spacecraft, yet. Science once dictated the world was flat and that Earth was the center of the universe and just recently, the Einstein's Theory of Relativity is being threatened of......he goofed on his math. The Periodic Table is multiplying with new discoveries of particles unheard of and unseen, oh my! I'll believe in science when it works, so until that happens..............my faith, beliefs in God and eternal life will be my destiny. Mankind is so ignorant as compared to the realities of God. God is overwhelming in Glory and power exceeding anything that science can prove. Mankind's science is like that the tinker toys you put together to make something achievable, whereas God sits watching and possibly cheering us on to His Grand Plan. Mankind is as small as the smallest of nature compared to the enormous being of God. God waits for all of us to make that decision on our lives, right or left or is it left or right or is it straight ahead, anyway it is a decision that is only personal and cannot be made by anybody but YOU. Science is fun, but don't convince yourself it is the "ONLY" truth. Science was created by man, wasn't it? So, how many mistakes does mankind make? God doesn't make mistakes.

    God Bless us all!
