Pope Francis has just declared, "God is not a magician with a wand". Also stating evolution and the big bang theory as being real. This is enormous news to me. For decades and much, much longer, the Church has been outwardly admitting to be completely against anything preached other than what they consider to be true. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made statements which said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI. He went on to say that the theory's of evolution and the big bang are not incompatible with the existence of the creator. Saying instead that they would in-fact, "require it".

Fancis said, “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so. He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.”.

Again, this is quite shocking news to me. Anyone have anything to say to this? I'm sure there is an enormous amount of people in the world that are wildly confused as to why their matriarch would say this. Being that it (to me) is almost entirely different then what has always been preached, and what their story of time and creation is.

I often have doubts but I choose to believe. I have never thought the bible was literal. That would be insane. My belief of the Earth being created is that it was done in 7 periods of time. Each period of time fitting in with evolution. Many millions of years. The formation of earth over hundreds of millions of years as well. It's nice to hear that the church is acknowledging that Science and evolution can not be denied.

In my opinion, the current Pope is one of the best in my lifetime - and I was born in 1947.

Much to my surprise, I recently discovered that the "father" of the Big Bang theory was a Catholic priest named Georges Lemaitre. More information about him can be found at the tail end of the article published below:

    http://tohell-andback.blogspot.com/2014/04/out-of-africa.html

Sadly, roughly 1/3 of our country believes in the literal translation of the Bible, and some of them are our elected officials, who remain convinced that the world was created in 6 days as we know them.

Think about it....is the pope now overruling gods word? Is he now claiming that god was incorrect?? Is this now a new-new-new edition?? This must be the new-new-testament. The coffers must be lower than I initially thought. So evolution is now accepted along with pedophilia, murder, rape, and receiving stolen plunder. is the Vatican the supreme court for the afterlife??? After 3000 years the pope now claims that the word of god was mis translated???? And god doesn't send down his mighty lightning bolts??? This is blasphemous. Is the pope now a pagan??? Does a selfish god not retaliate for this blasphemous insult??? This is comedy. Theres no other interpretation of " on the 6th day he created man. Absolutely no references or.hint about any kind of evolution. There is only one way to interpret this....Literally. What about Leviticus??? Homosexuality is an abomination. Im not the sharpest tool in the shed...but clearly..that is a statement...And now the new pope decides hes going to ease up on Gods word....what a joke

Kind of strange; believers think the world is only 6000 years old so we must have developped in a very rapid way from a one cell fishy swimmer to a creepy land animal then a monkey to a neanthertal and then on top of that skin color changes and an I-phone enlarged ear. Wow all of that including some people who could walk on water; built huge "titanics" holding only animals but forgot kangero's; splitting whole rivers; human babies who all of a sudden became "god's; virgins burned at the stake (the pope's halloween) the crusades which started the mess in the middle east; an Spanish idiot who discovered America ( he should not have done that!) and made the church rich with stolen Inca gold. So anyway the Pope has an awful lot to review and correct; may be he should write a new bible; may be Barnes and Noble can help.

Many members in this forum have vehemently defended God's word. Now, the must find themselves in a bit of a quagmire. In no way can genesis relate to evolution. But, as I've always stated....wherever someone can interject magic into any topic the issue has no boundaries...so they'll be able to justify this new new new edition. They can change the name of the Bible to DINOSAURS, GODS, EBOLA, MONKEYS AND BANANAS. ..A NEW EDITION

I think the crazy logic behind the world being 6000 years old finally came to the surface. That having been said when just recently scientist found 49,000 year old bones in Siberia....... it became obvious that the religious story was far from accurate. That's why I believe the stories of the bible are symbolic.... representational..... far from Literal. Nobody way back then could have made such a huge boat (without modern tools) or collected animals from around the world. The bible is just representations of what the church wants you to believe. Most importantly....Be honest, Don't steal...Don't kill, Etc., Etc.
I'm not asking anyone to believe anything...... I'm just explaining my views on the book. Have a great day.

Look Tony,if it is proven that such book contains fibs; then automatically the whole book becomes a "novel" not a thruthful/reliable sourse.

First of all the whole book is pasted together from all kinds of different scrolls and periods; the New Testament is a total hoax as well; babies never will become "god's" especially if they first have to learn to talk, walk, learn not to fill their diapers, and absorb what and why humans do things. Also sperm does not fall out of the sky and people never learned to walk on water either. Just with these "little" mistakes, makes this whole book worthless. I wonder when will the Pope admit that there is no "heaven" or "hell", or that anything at all leaves dead bodies; that is until now the biggest lie of any church.

The Catholic church for 2000 years were gods gangsters. They understood the bible. Their god was a vengeful viscous god who required death for any type of insubordination. This is why the New testament is loved so much today. God changes his mind...."love thy neighbor" turn the other cheek. the new testament allowed people to police themselves, to enslave themselves to this loving new concept that allowed you to live as long as you paid taxes. But for everyone else who didn't believe, or didn't pay...they went right back to the Old Testament to justify the crusades. They stated "Dont kill"...unless of course they were doing the killing. "Dont steal" unless of course you stole in the name of god. And god needed his cut. Dont covet thy neighbors wife....but you can have his little boys. This is the core foundation of Christianity. TO ENSLAVE And since lately there's been a topic about racism.... this is what I find most troubling in the black community of all southern states. We can agree the most christians in the south are baptist. Which basically means that they subscribe to the beliefs of the king james version...which just so happens to be the same religion that their slave owners forced upon them. So...in the year 2014 racism still exists even though you have white and black people praying to the same Jesus. Do you not find that insane? Whitey forced this version of Christianity on you, and yet, you dont understand why racism exist. Slavery without shackles.

The next best thing to completely doing away with religion in culture altogether (highly unlikely) is to have religion not oppose science. It is a big step for the Pope to come out and be reasonable and yet another issue. A changing with the times on homosexuals and now possibly with scientific cosmology, that is marked progress.

I doubt it; the base of religion is not so much our daily life, but the so called afterlife as a intimidation "listen to us" or else......
The whole afterlife thing keeps the churches of all religions alive; because there is no scientifical proof something like that exists, but no one has the guts to go in against it because of the influence of churches in any society; it works like a social work place like the army. So I guess we will be stuck with it for many years to come. Since they sell snake oil (thus a bussiness) they should be taxed. I saw on TV a couple of Baptists church preachers buying a gorgeous house overlooking the sea on Hawaii. So they must be making lots of tax free money from selling lies.

I assume that you do not recognize the Amendment on freedom of religion if you have a desire to do away it from your perspective. Thus you do not recognize the Constitution and those that fought and died for it's content. What else do you want to take away from people. Are you really a Democrat or something else? What do you stand for that promotes life, liberty and the pursuit of Justice? Apparently, not much if you continue to persecute those that have faith. Nazism is closer to your belief than what you think, especially when you profess taking someone else's freedoms.

North Korea places restrictions on religion, which sounds like your place of a home. If religion is such a torment to you than why do you bother remaining in this country? Apparently, since religion does more good around the world, you don't want to recognize the contribution. Just who are the people (Doctors & nurses) that are coming back from west Africa having symptoms of Ebola? The news media reports they are part of religious groups providing help around the world............it's called, "Heal the sick". Just what healing do you do? Do you feed the hungry with your time and resources? Have you built a house for the poor? Have you went out during a frozen night and handed out water to drink, food to eat, and a blanket for warmth to the homeless?

Religion provides many soldiers in God's Army for the goodness and spreading hope around the world. I continue to have difficulty in figuring out why people are so disconnected from what goodness religion brings to society. Groups that are not religious are not numerous enough to do the same work that religious groups do. Those without faith appear more to have problems with helping people because they do not commit and think only of themselves. I've seen man times on this Hub responses that indicate people should be self sustaining, which is another way of saying, "people in need don't deserve help". That is so selfish and inhumane. Religion will continue and we will preserve our rights to our faith with our blood as it has been done historically on many battlefields. It's not nice to threaten our faith, but we will pray for you constantly.

    May God Bless you all!

Like I said many times; indeed you are free to live in la la land and keep on halucinating etc. No thanks, I do not want to be blessed by you; do me a favor and "pray" for yourself, that one day you get some common sense and reality in your head.

Dutch, I have to wonder if some of these people are still hanging on to Dr. leary's mind enhancing methods from the 60's? Please pass the mushrooms ;)
