    3 US girls went missing from Colorado. They were found in Germany on their way to Turkey/Syria to join ISIS. They were 15 and 16 years old. They were of African descent. The idea sounds crazy to me. What kind of existence would that be ? ISIS is known for raping their women. Sounds like they made a very bad decision, but I wonder what their motivation was.

    Their reasoning isn't a whole lot different than our so called "American heroes/patriots", I.e. Recent high school graduates (maybe) who gave been brainwashed their whole short life to believe that by enlisting in the military they are supporting the USA instead of the reality that they are only dragging the country down.

    That response is so totally out-of-phase with people joining the ranks of our armed forces. PGR, must be the beer talking to you, which is zero intelligence. People join the armed forces for a variety of reasons, which enhancing skills and education is the most pronounced personal reason to join. Others join because it is historically in their family or they have had revered moment in life that someone they know that was a service member made a honorable contribution. That honorable contribution to God and Country made a pronounced achievement that this person what's to do likewise. Than there are those that join because they have "No" other means for a job, or school and income. These people joining have to learn the hardest to make it in todays armed forces due to the competitive edge in being successful. There's something about those who join for a personal conviction and those that join for nothing else to do. Anyway, since America requires maintaining armed forces at the ready at all times and having a valued skill set within the work force, there are great jobs and opportunities for youth that no college or university can ever produce. On-the-job training is best in the military, although some service men and women are not always available for the choice jobs. However, the brightest and most opportunistic individual will study and work to obtain the career choice he/she chooses.

    To categorically compare those three girls in Germany going to ISIL with youth joining the armed forces, that is lame and in bad taste that only someone who is mute to serving in honor can make in poor contrast.

    God Bless our Service Men and Women!

    You're problem is reality! Most kids join the military because of a misguided patriotic idealism they've been brainwashed with their whole life, because they come from a "military family" for what that's worth, they can't find a job, have no skills, are troublemakers, gun nuts, bullys and on and on. The military (and society) wants us all to believe the hype about "a few good men" "leadership",etc, etc but the reality is they want dumb, young, easily impressionable kids they can mold into robotic killing machines and then abandon they when they wake up or get discharged. There's really no difference about how religion works it's same "magic" on the young, easily fooled church members and how the military does the same thing on its recruits. One would expect strongly reliefs people to also be strongly militarily oriented, and you prove the point!

    Typical AMC; I guess you are forgetting that this country pumps in "militarism: day by day, as well the NRA promotes weapons; then on top of it the media promotes killing via the "games"," series" all the time. But the kids are told not to kill otherwise you go to jail; however the "hero's on TV always get rewarded the more they kill the bigger the hero. this is a very sick country; including people like AMC who promotes killing blessed by his own little "god". No wonder kids want to join a group who shoot at everything without restrictions; the squirels, cats, possums are already shot dead so they want some real targets. Love the mentality here; again I repeat look at the serie on PBS "Loosing Iraq" then you get the real picture of dirty politics and a murderous army. No wonder a large percentage come back home as a vegetable or total nuts.

    PGR right on; miltarism in this country has become a national shame; looks like the Hitler Jugend all over again. Check out the series "Losing Iraq" on PBS and the Bush/Rumsfeld push to get things his way regardless of killing hundreds of thousands civilians. The chickens have now come home to roost costing us (until now) another 424 million since the new air attacks started; with what results? They will only hate us some more.

    Well there are no doubt fine young men and women serving in the military, during the Iraq war the standards were lowered to attain quotas. This 2012 article by the Guardian, addresses some of the problems when undesirables are allowed to join.

    The Guardian, 31 August 2012: The modern US army: unfit for service?

    "Gone are the days of the all-American army hero. These days, the US military is more like a sanctuary for racists, gang members and the chronically unfit."

    The author, of course, has cherry picked some bad recruits to write about, but I know that many soldiers do not fit this stereotype. It doesn't take too many bad apples though before everyone gets a bad name.

    Read the article. It is rather long but revealing.

    Thanks "Schmidt", as a matter of fact you can't blame the "army" itself; a lot has to do with our militaristic culture as well our leaders. Often modern wars are "far" from "me" killings; one missile from a plane can kill dozens, but the pilot does not see the "dead"; that makes our modern killing methods so hypocritical. Sorry to say there are no "hero's" in our present wars; killing without being attacked yourself is pure murder, especially in countries which you don't know, but soldiers are being told to go there by our fantastic leaders and raise hell.
    Pls note as well; some of the "bad recruits" may have ended up in our police force by now!!

    ====================

    Unfit for service......very good article. Not just Nazi's, Skin heads, and gang members but also people put in jail are given a chance to get out by joining the military. The few, the proud, the misfits who comprise our military. Some will put them on the tallest platform but the truth is hard to deny.

    Looks as if the military needs more than just a "few good men"?

    I got nailed not so long ago for stating, that also our police is infiltrated by these same persons coming from the army; so I'm glad some others are realizing such.
