What will the U.S. look like in 10 years? Social programs, fuel and food cost? Economically and socially? If things remain as they are? Realistically this forum discusses the past and present on a daily basis but never the future. I welcome objective responses to this question. Do any of you see China stepping in and replacing us as instigator in other countries affairs....because we still have the most powerful military on earth?

If the Republicans win the 2016 election and then the 2020 one there will be even more inequality, poverty, racial unrest and social injustice than we have ever seen before. We will be facing racial and class warfare as never seen in modern times as the oppressed minorities and poor become the norm and the old, white males struggle to keep a hold on their power base. Fortunately for me I'll probably not be around to witness it but I fear for the rest of you. I consider myself very fortunate to be a pre-baby boomer and to have experienced life growing up without constant fear and economic chaos. A time before TV wasn't in every home (my family got our first 12" b&w TV when I was seven years old), the news consulted on a half hour of reporting of the day's events, a time when a father could support his family without having to work several jobs and have no benefits, a time when kids could just go out and play in the neighborhood without fear of being shot, attacked or kidnapped. Of course, I'm talking about white, middle class experiences only but even the poor of the day were better off than they are today. True there is more racial diversity in society today and that is very good but not good enough.

Good question! Mostly I agree with PGR he's a great thinker. I only want to add; looking at the state of this country that indeed we will no longer be a world dominant power, because we will have our hands full fixing this country at that time, because the "rich" will have expanded their power (including the Koch brothers) and did not support the "little" man on the street. Fergusson will be a small riot compared what will happen then. Also because of our polution and lack of infrastructure more disasters will happen as well new virusses will pop up. Global warming will cause more natural disasters for which we will not be prepared. Air quality will also deteriorate rapidly. China will become the new worldpower. The middle east will become a huge dangerous entity for the western world. Sorry to be negative, but the trend line is there already; I wish it would be different.

In any of these possible situations that you and PGR point out do you at least see a change in our citizens even though things would be that bad...you see, I agree with the both of you. And I believe that we are so divided as people that this division is the core reason that I see no change.....maybe one day people witill shock me and rise.....I don't see it in 10 years...maybe 30

I can see where the new race will be to the stars, that's universal and not Hollywood. New technology will continue to obtain blazing speeds into the commercial market and we will experience a dumb-down approach that only the youth will be able to utilize these new products. Older people will be set in their old fashion ideas and obsolescence that the youth will just ignore us as we ride our horsey into the sunset. The brightest concepts will be in space, with Mars, and beyond making headlines. Resources coming from the stars and planets will begin promoting more worldly production. The world fight will be a stage for who gets their flag on a planet the fastest and who will make a stand that this planet is theirs and nobody else's. There will be world court battles and just maybe wars on earth.

I can see where diseases, plagues and famine will continue until people start working together to eliminate social issues. The bickering between people on religions and racial divide have a potential to wreck a large part of our prosperity. People have a propensity to ridicule and criticize others for the sake of power and persecution. Even in his Hub, responsive players show this as a disregard for other people. If you can get over this people against people idea, we may have a chance.

I see a continuance of political drama on parties struggling for control of the population especially for those in big business and power hungry establishments competing for their dominance in a world market. The recent Voter ID decision on Texas is just another example of a political system fighting for dominance over people by denying their right to vote. SCOTUS Ginsburg has a great report on the SCOTUS scandal on the United States Justice system. These political battles will continue as well as the electoral candidates against each other.

Although wars threats, disease possibilities and political struggles appear to end our society, the world will pursue and conquer many obstacles on missions into space. We haven't seen anything, yet, so hold onto your shorts, because amazing things are about to happen within 10 years, more within 20 years and a hell of lot more in 30 years. I'll be in my 90's by than, probably still on my IPAD4 and driving the same Ford truck. Of course, I'll still be a practicing Christian supporting whatever I can for the Glory of God. I'm still waiting for that "ALIEN", so that I can talk God with him/her. Maybe I can swap my Ford truck to the Alien for a galactic hopping taxi.

I'll answer for a change; first of all the "alien" wants something more than your old Ford truck; second "it" has certainly never heard of a "human" called "Jesus"; third our space exploration will find more evidence that "religion" is ridiculous; fourth the budgets will be not there for space, because all the money is wasted on our wars and the Pentagon. ( we will be still in Afghanistan over 10 years as just decided; plus likely still cleaning up the mess in the middle east ) Maybe over 10 years you will come to your senses and have become an atheist and learned to differentiate between facts and lies.

The only thing thing that technology will bring is more unemployment. Machines replacing human labor. Our government has already killed our space program so there won't be a race to space. AMC...there is no evidence of aliens either...only rednecks on meth claiming abduction from a superior being...only to be sexually molested on an alien gurney. people can't pay their bills now so who will be purchasing this technology you speak of? I believe that things will get to a point that jesus won't be an issue because people will be too busy surviving

Case in point............where has that new space vehicle that landed been the past "TWO YEARS"? Space race dead..........only shows what some people know, which is not a whole lot. Those who pursue the outer boundaries of our planet just don't have to tell everyone. It's by chance we get a treat to read what is going on. There so much going on that you and everybody else (including me) don't have a clear picture of where the investment is going. There are small to large secret shops having a tremendous amount of success right under our noses. There're so secretive that you can't even smell them, let alone see them.

Yea,...chicken little...the sky is falling..........it's falling into a better view from my lawn chair.

The two trends that could cause social instability in the USA in the coming years are economic inequality and climate change. Taken together the situation could be even more aggravated. In Syria, for example, the social instability that led to the rise of ISIS is the long prolonged drought that caused their agricultural industry to collapse, which magnified all the other social problems...most notably the lack of employment for young people.

The economic inequality in the USA, largely caused by the lack of opportunity and upward mobility, is at it's highest since the Great Depression of 1929. We are near a tipping point where it wouldn't take much to ignite major social unrest. Could that be the California drought? Reservoirs are drying up, and the loss of the California breadbasket could have major implications on the US economy and employment opportunities.

In countries like Syria, the rulers used their power to squash rebellion. In the USA, the super rich oligarchs have grabbed and retained power through dividing the middle class against itself. The Koch brothers driven by greed have effectively driven wedges through the middle class using social issues. Fox News is the propaganda outlet and the five Supreme Court conservatives also step in to ensure that power doesn't shift by killing any kind of campaign finance reform, undoing civil rights and voting protections, and pretty well aligning themselves with their corporate benefactors.

It is not sustainable. Something has to give...but when?

However, China will not step in to replace America in our "world policeman" role. They will largely stick to the borders of their country perhaps inviting conflicts with their immediate neighbors like India and Japan.

Chiken little....90 percent of what we know about space was tax payer funded....and for public benefit...you would not benefit from private industry running a space race...you could if you can afford it...get ur information correct....Nasa was a great institution for universities technological and medical research. They allowed these corporations so that they can charge tax payers an inflated amount... AMC... u have a very twisted view of our planet and it inhabitants....go ask your Jesus and some of your Alien advisors how you should respond..... clearly you always have such great knowlege on the non-existent. Also, where did u get this top secret info about our secret bases? You must be CIA

"schmidt" now you are making sense; especially your last line; indeed our "policeman" role will be our undoing; In China they are a lot smarter than us and don't dictate the world; improving our own country should be the prime goal; not creating terrorists who hate our guts.

Earlier I posted that the citizenry would awaken in about 30 years. I was wrong.... more like 300 years. Last night my wife and I went to see "Fury" (great movie). As we're waiting and watching the trailers for the upcoming movies, we saw the trailer for the movie "Exodus"...which basically tells the story of Moses. Well, when Moses parts the Red sea...people actually applauded in the theater. ...Here we have a man that seperates 2 bodies of water by his command and people in this century actually believe this event.....we are in trouble in this country.

The Glory of it...................God Bless people's ability to make movies enjoyable. Moses parting the Red sea is better than watching mayhem from some lunatic shoot-up children, some wild sicko rape a human being, or thieves taking off with people's hard earned money/property. I would especially enjoy watching this herald story of the Bible. It will be hard though to beat ole Charleston Heston playing Moses. Maybe someone on this post would enjoy watching Spiderman.
