Governor Rick Scott may have sealed his fate after a very public temper tantrum at last evenings gubernatorial debate in south Florida. Scott refused to take the stage for the first four minutes of the debate because he was upset that Charlie Crist had a small fan inside of his podium. You read that correctly. Governor Scott threw a temper tantrum over a fan.
The Scott campaign claimed Crist broke the rules of the debate, but that claim was contradicted by the Crist campaign, who provided a copy of the
Candidate Letter of Agreement
both candidates signed.
It is quite amazing that a sitting governor wouldn't be aware of the terrible optics of refusing to take the stage on a televised because he was whining about something. Charlie Crist had the stage to himself for over four minutes and even got in a pretty serious dig about the governor taking the fifth amendment (in reference to the Governors recent refusal to answer questions over allegations of Medicare fraud at a company he used to own.) Scott took the fifth a reported 75 times in that deposition and even refused to admit that he started up the company. Last night's charade might wind up being more damning to him than taking the fifth 75 times.
The best part of the evening was when Scott's people were desperately trying to spin this as a positive development. They even had the audacity to say they didn't know if Crist was going to show up on the stage and that is why Scott waited to go on. That makes little sense considering Crist was on the stage by himself for over four minutes. How can you claim you were worried your debate partner wasn't going to show up when your debate partner was standing on the stage by himself?
What do you think of last nights episode? Do you think Scott sealed his fate and will be voted out of office or will Florida voters forgive him for acting so childish?

Jared:
According to the most recent poll by Real Clear Politics, Crist had a slight edge over Scott even before the debate, and I agree with you that last night's debate probably doomed his campaign:

Florida as a whole is only slightly more Republican than Democrat (Cook Partisan Index of R+2) so if the Democrat Party can "get out the vote", Scott is going to be history.

I guess he will have to go back to cheating Medicare after Dutch and others vote him out!

Wow, that is insane. Sounds like something a 3rd grade teacher would have to put up with.

Just heard Rachel Maddow cover this on her show. Wow. This is probably the governor race where I'm most hoping the incumbent falls. Rick Scott is a terrible politician and really just needs to go away.

Sadly as I watch the news on that debate, the focus seems to be on the fan incident and not on the substance of the debate. Maybe Rick Scott's ploy had its intended effect to divert attention from the real issues. The race is called a "toss-up" but that just shows how some people just don't pay attention to what Scott has been doing.

As I already said things about this total crook Scott who stole millions of Medicare as well takes bribes from the sugar industry who polutes our rivers and beaches; sorry this filthy rich crook belongs in jail instead. He has the guts in an add to walk on (I guess) an Hawai beach with nice clean water holding hands with his wife; which picture sure was not taken in Ft.Myers. Then holding little kids and babies while hoarding money from all sides. He is one of those super religious Republican hypocrites who is fully against abortion or birthcontrol, let alone proper same wages for women etc. A real "tea party" member. Sorry I hate his guts. I wonder about this country; neither is Charly Christ a sweetheart both are "shady"; so a no win situation.

Luckily, late polling shows Crist up by 1 point.

It's crazy that I find myself rooting for a former Republican, but Rick Scott is legitimately insane. I surely hope Crist wins tomorrow.

I wonder if Governor Scott of Florida still believes that Climate Change is a hoax?! If he does one can only wonder if he is in serious need of a brain transplant.

Unfortunately it did not cost Gov. Scott. He's alive and well. Sadly. Very rarely should a 3 year old thread be brought back. Another example of why I ask what the purpose is.

There is a Sunday Morning Public Channel Show featuring the Florida Governors office and some of the Cabinet. I drop in for a look when I am home and the only thing that comes to mind is hearing Scott raving over AG Bondi's ability to bring dogs in and get them adopted. I am glad of that because at least something positive is getting done.
