Reuters: U.S. Justice Dept. cites missteps by police during Ferguson unrest

Reuters likes to keep things as apolitical as they can in their reporting, but the upcoming report by the DOJ that Reuters and other major networks were given early access to lays blame on the Ferguson police department for their heavy handed tactics in the seventeen days following the murder of Michael Brown.

I'll release a link to the full report as soon it is released, but here's a few bullet points from the Reuters review of the report:

*Using dogs for crowd control during peaceful protests

*Placing snipers atop armored vehicles who pointed their guns are peaceful protesters

    *Deploying teargas without warning

    *Inconsistent use of force

*Police removed their nameplates to avoid getting in trouble for their brutality

These are only a handful of the 45 findings of wrongdoing the DOJ found. The full report will be released soon.

Doesn't surprise me. Another example of violent and unfair inequities. Only resulting in jail time and death if you're on one side of the fence.

    I agree.

The entire Ferguson PD needs to go. It has now been proven, beyond any doubt, that they target their black citizens while letting their white citizens off with a free pass whenever they do something illegal. The black population in Ferguson is 67 percent, but they make up 85% of traffic stops, 90% of citations, and a staggering 93% of all arrests.

The most sickening statistic though is the number of black police officers in a predominately black town. Three...yes, three...of the 53 officers in Ferguson are black. A town that has a population that is 67% black has three black police officers.

It's time for the State or County police to come in and sweep every single officer out and start over.

Maybe, maybe not.............because of a few you can't diminish the good that Ferguson Police do. Using your solution, you might say that about any group that has bad apples and just throw the whole bunch out. That's like the old saying, "don't throw out the baby with the bath water". There's reasons for justice and no radical or no common sense thinking is just as bad as the crime. History is full of aggressive genocidal solutions to removing any and all who are associated with groups. Removing all the Ferguson Police, just compounds the problem and provides nothing intelligent to solve the Police issues.

Ok, so, maybe you don't believe any of the above and you stick to your nonsense. Where are you going to get the Police candidates? Blacks in Ferguson will not come forward or seek to "Protect and Serve" their community of Ferguson. Most eligible Police candidates have to live in the City of their employment. Missouri cities have rule in effect because it supports the Police to "Protect and Serve" THEIR community.

I'm waiting for your sensible answer..............how are you going to get the blacks in Ferguson to step forward? This is not a joke, but I do find it amusing.

Ha, ha! I doubt many Blacks would be welcomed to the force, just a few for the sake of "image". It's long past the time police and other civil servants are required to live where they work anyhow. It's nothing but total BS to keep the under informed American voters and taxpayers happy. The Blacks know they would be taken down and put in their place if they ever dared to try and join the police force. A few Uncle Tom's don't mean shit!

I agree with Jared, to make a clean "ship"; as an extra point take the militarism out and retrain these recruits the way it should; "serve" the people. don't shoot the people. Also make sure the population balance is represented. In that whole St Louis area there must be enough people who want that job; unemployment is high.

Just like the Marines.............."The Few"......are qualified to serve in the Police. Anyway, Ferguson is not St. Louis. A Ferguson Police Office will more likely have to locate residence in Ferguson, City proper. Additionally, you have to have a hiring of Police based on coming forward to serve, not a conscription. Many that may be qualified to approach the Ferguson Police for a job, most likely do not "DESIRE" to work for a living. This cuts down the recruiting class for Ferguson.

Now, Missouri can send Police from Cities, Counties and Townships, but only if they choose to do so. The City of Ferguson are on their own to solve this delicate problem of modeling a more quality Police force.

They can't be police because the police are too busy arresting and charging all of the black citizens in Ferguson. The Ferguson Police Department, and nearly every police force throughout this country, don't hire people who have a record. It's a never ending catch-22.

And what does any of that have to do with the current police department breaking the law against protesters who had a First Amendment right to make their voices heard? The riots didn't happen until after it was announced that Darren Wilson wouldn't face any charges. This report has to do with the Ferguson Police Department's heavy handed tactics in the days and weeks following the death of Michael Brown and before the DA announced that the grand jury was letting a murderer go free.

It's easy to try to muddy a discussion by changing the topic, but muddying a discussion is all that you are doing.

I felt the need to resurrect this thread now that there's a "new" video that seems to call the official police account of Michael Brown's death into question.

The video, that the police always had but chose not to release, shows Michael Brown at the same convenience store he was accused of stealing cigars from hours before the incident that wound up taking his life. It shows Michael Brown apparently selling marijuana to a store clerk in exchange for a box of cigarillo cigars around 1 am on the day of his murder, but Brown then comes back and hand the cigars back to the clerk so he could presumably pick them up later.

What's really weird is that the police only released the video showing Brown entering the store eleven hours later to pick up the cigars and not both videos showing Brown in the store.

Here's my guess. The police chose to hide this video because it didn't conform to their stated version of events that led to Michael Brown's death. They wanted the public to believe that Micheal Brown robbed a convenience store; the police were called; Brown fought with Darren Wilson; Wilson killed Brown because he feared for his life. This video would have called that into question.

Anyone who has been on this website for awhile knows exactly where I stand with this case. I believe that Brown was killed because a white police officer got trigger happy. This new, or should I say years old video that was hidden from the public, only reinforces my belief.

Hmmm The good the bad and the ugly. Not just a movie. The Ferguson situation was bad on many levels. Was bad then and now is a reminder that people die because you don't always need to have a good reason. Just need to be more white than the victim.

Legal systems, law enforcement and the corporate prison systems have created a very profitable business and that business is Prisoners. The more prisoners the more profits and at $50,000 a year per prisoner that is big time profits.

If the prison system spends 45 cents per meal and gets $10.00 per meal one can figure how profitable it can be.

This profitable business explains why more and more Americans have ended up in jail for years waiting for trial because they could not make bail even though they may be innocent and also explains why more people are arrested for minor violations of the law and couldn't afford to pay the fine so they are arrested and jailed.

These profitable private prison systems encourage jailing the poor that are unable to make bail or pay fines or are peaceful demonstrators and in a word the whole thing really STINKS!

Agreed. Probably worthy of a new thread on for profit prisons. A bad thing without question.
