most people (even moderate Republicans) are aware of the damage being done to our country by the Koch brothers, the Tea Party, and FOX "news"

there WAS a time in our history when business leaders plotted to overthrow the government in order to further their own interests, and to establish a FASCIST government ..

then, as now, the people at the core of the plot were America's richest businessmen ..

it happened in 1933, and the plot was directed at our newly elected President, Franklin Roosevelt:

if you review the information at the link above, you'll notice that are some interesting parallels between 1933 and what's happening today

"You know the American people will swallow that. We have got the newspapers. We will start a campaign that the President's health is failing. Everyone can tell that by looking at him, and the dumb American people will fall for it in a second…" (remind you of FOX "news" viewers?)

The businessmen also promised that money was no object. (the Koch brothers spent $412,670, 666 during the 2012 election cycle)

in the early days, many businessmen openly admired Mussolini because he had used a strong hand to deal with labor unions, put out social unrest, and get the economy working again, if only at the point of a gun (ask the teachers in Wisconsin what they think of Scott Walker)

The Committee whitewashed the public version of its final report, deleting the names of powerful businessmen whose reputations they sought to protect. The most likely reason for this response is that Wall Street had undue influence in Congress also. Even more alarming, the elite-controlled media failed to pick up on the story, and even today the incident remains little known. (News Corp, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, owns both FOX "news" and the Wall Street Journal)

Needless to say, the survival of America's democracy is not an automatic or sure thing. Americans need to remain vigilant against all enemies... both foreign and domestic.

    Arizona --

Thanks for sharing this. The rich and powerful have always been at odds with democracy, and fascism is a political ideology that suits them quite well. Of course, the word "fascism" is out of vogue following it's disasterous self promoting policies leading up to and during World War II, but that doesn't mean that the various traits of fascism have been cast aside. They are just repackaged under a different name.

The rich and powerful, many of them corporate CEOs, are a very tiny minority of the population, yet control tremendous wealth. For them to be able to push their "fascist like" policies requires that they identify and use wedge issues to divide the middle class. And they also play on emotions...fear, anger and hate.

The wedge issues are numerous...public debt and deficits, immigration, religion (Christians versus Muslims), cultural issues (gay rights, abortion, contraception), deep seated racial biases, taxes, hyper-patriotism, wars, guns, heath care, jobs, welfare and food stamps, and more. They get the populace to hate our government, calling it "Big Government" while continually feeding misinformation to an angry ignorant public.

The number 1 media source driving the oligarch agenda with falsehoods and ginning up anger is billionaire, plutocrat Rupert Murdoch's Fox News who profits by selling hate and anger. However, there are others like Rush Limbaugh that feed at that trough.

They use think tanks like the Heritage Foundation to twist the facts and provide a phony basis for supporting their discredited "trickle down economic agenda". Freedom becomes synonymous with free markets and government regulations designed to protect the public are cast as inhibiting jobs growth. The word "freedom" is applied to every one of the oligarch fantasies...it resonates.

The employ ALEC to write legislation favorable to their agenda. And they have bought off the Supreme Court to gut campaign finance laws and roll back parts of civil rights laws all to advance their cause.

Today, the Tea Party is the champion of their cause. Before that it was the John Birch Society. History is full of their movements and causes, and the one defining attribute common to all of them in history is that they continually need to feed false information to an ignorant public, and they need to continually play on their emotions. No time for critical thinking.

Some of the most WILD stuff I found out lately, is the fact that the John Birch Society put the "Wanted for Treason" posters of JFK into the Dallas, TX streets and newspaper on Nov 22, 1963. This shows that there is some reasonable PROOF that they had something to do with the JFK assassination.

On JBS national council was Revilo Oliver, who was involved with William Pierce in founding a Ku Klux Klan orgn ("The Alliance") & later on, started a NAZI orgn, ("The National Vanguard") that were used to foment racial hatred and anti-semitism all over the USA. They used issues of prejudice & hate to create their angry mobs to be used whenever the right-wing wanted an avidly patriotic group to advance their agenda.

    eternal flame:

the link below will take you to a picture of the poster:

    http://thenewliberator.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/jfk_wanted_for_treason.jpg?w=500

as is true with the "morans" of the right who can't even spell the words on their protest signs correctly, the Birchers managed to misspell the world "marriage" on their poster ...

the link below gives your more details on the story itself, and further reinforces the fact that history DOES repeat itself:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/11/22/922161/-The-far-right-in-Dallas-in-November-1963

a few key phrases (again) from the link above:

Even though Dallas was one of the regional capitals of the far-right, with lots of active Birchers backed by billionaire oilmen who hated paying taxes and what little environmental regulation there was back then.

Back then, the far-right was also working in lockstep with the 1960s version of the Religious Right (Billy James Hargis, the original Bob Jones, etc.), like now mostly fundamentalist Southerners.

A new generation of white Texans has inherited the violent rhetoric, belief in absurd conspiracies, hatred of the other, and inchoate rage of the 1963 Dallas Birchers (think Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the "invasion" by "illegals" from Central America etc) ...

Scary indeed; however the "voters" keep on voting for this party; I guess they are totally ignorant of what is going on in the world let alone in Texas etc. So in other words keep them dumb then we (GOP) will win; the "church" will also help to achieve that goal.

C.J. Werleman, AlterNet, July 16, 2014: America Is Ripe For Authoritarianism

C.J. Werleman has an interesting article in AlterNet in which he points towards all the ingredients of fascism present in our society today.

"America is on the precipice of a fascist uprising. While liberals have consistently leveled the f-word against opponents on the right, much the same way conservatives have appropriated socialist or Marxist against those on the political left, there is now data showing that proto-fascist movements are on the rise."

He quotes Noam Chomsky: “It [USA] is very similar to late Weimar Germany. The parallels are striking, and the United States is extremely lucky that no honest, charismatic figure has arisen.”

Perhaps this is an exaggeration, but still as I look at the 14 common traits of fascism certainly there very vocal and angry factions of the populace that mimic that of Weimar, Germany. They are a minority, but I don't like the trend. Many use the Tea Party pulpit to drive their agenda. Ignorance and hate rule. They just need a charismatic authoritarian leader. They seem to have a lot of authoritarian followers ready to march.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders is talking about Koch Brothers making the move to buy this years Senatorial election and how the US has become an oligarchy because of people like the Koch Brothers. And he really isn't wrong.
