President Obama just finished a far reaching and potentially game changing foreign policy address to the graduates of West Point. In it, the President called for a sea change in how we conduct our foreign engagements and his vision of how American military might should be used. The President's vision calls for the end of cowboy diplomacy and intervening in more countries than we can keep track of. He called for America to continue being the world leader, but insisted we can do that without resorting to military action every time something goes wrong in the world.

The speech will undoubtedly be met with outrage by the right, who often seem to think the only answer to anything bad going on in the world is to invade a country. He will be called weak and indecisive. And he will be chastised for not using the military power he has at his finger tips as Commander-in-Chief. I say bring it on. It's time for the left in this country to stand up and show there is a different way to do things.

Did anyone catch the President's speech today? What do you think about the foreign policy vision he laid out in the address to the graduates?

I was really disturbed by it; he wants to continue chasing terrorists ( determined by us?, that they are possible terrorists; which is impossible especially looking from a drone etc. who determines that anyway?) and to spent a billion or more to do so. This guy needs an education for sure!!! The more you chase them the more are recruted; the famillies and friends of the one's we kill will seek revenge one way or another. Sorry Obama is brainless in that respect. Keep doing such will have as result something worse than 9/11. Sorry he talked to Bush too much when they both were in Africa. I fully agree with Jamesn on this subject.

It's interesting how two people can watch the same speech and come to entirely different conclusions. I respect your opinion, and agree with you on a few points, but I must strongly disagree with you on others.

We both agree that combat drones bombing countries we are technically not engaged in hostilities with is not the wisest use of our vast military resources. We have undoubtedly killed and maimed countless innocent civilians in our fight against terrorism and our leaders need to learn that it's impossible to defeat an ideology with bombs and missiles alone.

Where we disagree is with the whole idea that our President is some brainless person who gets off on killing innocent people. This ideological conflict is not nearly as simplistic as you make it out to be and there are no easy answers. There are a lot of people out there who want nothing more than to attack our country and I have absolutely zero problem with using our military and other resources to prevent them from doing so. I just want them to do it wisely and not indiscriminately. We can read someone's iris from over a mile high in the sky. There should be a clear cut way for us to use that technology to our advantage so we only kill those who are actively engaged in doing our country harm and refrain from doing it at weddings or other functions where innocent people will get caught up in the crossfire.

I'm wondering what you want the President to do. He laid out the most dovish foreign policy doctrine since President Eisenhower's infamous farewell address in January of 1961 and you seemed to have heard something entirely different.

Thanks Jared; indeed Obama himself is not the "driver" it are the people around him. Sorry to say the US has and always will be "scared" because our media will make sure people stay scared for "terrorists" this is brainwashed into their minds. As we discussed this before, more people get killed due to many other causes in this country than ever terrorists can achieve. I guess over the years we killed more of our own people with guns, cars, accidents etc. Why don't we start with "A" instead we always start at "Z" ; so what is the cause of terrorism? (start with the CAUSE) Again we paint them with that title because we start with discriminations such as being "communists", "dictators", muslim sects" etc. Plenty of wars and our invasions were done because we dictate the world how it should live or on how it should be ruled. We kind of force them to think our way; steal their resources or see it as an "export of our goods" area. As soon as there is any conflict, we stick our noses into it.
The point is if you leave them alone and may be feed them , (but instead we supply them mostly with only money for their leaders or weapons, like with Egypt; examples enough) then they have no interest in attacking you. Just "attacking" is pure stupid; it does not solve anything; like fly swatting with a matchstick.

It's moronic to even consider dropping America's guard against Terrorism. Our countries call, "Remember Pearl Harbor", "Remember 9-11" and "Remember Beirut, Lebanon", all these examples are horrific accounts of an attack because public ignorance contributed to a downfall in intelligence and maintaining America's guard against those that threaten our lives and interests. I believe Obama has it right and the knowledge he has in America's military and influence around the world is exactly what this country needs. Our President has to balance the need for protecting our country, maintain America's influence and guard around the world, and at the same time keep the "Political Republican/Tea Partier" idiots at a distance obstructing Obama's ideas to improve America. President Obama has a tough job because of the internal threats within our own government. For Obama's part, his calling is from McConnel (KY) "make him a 1st term president", is still an injustice from a band of idiots.

One of many threads on this blog is about the information release in weaponry and modifying our military's strategy in offense and defense tactics. With this information, it is easy to determine that America no longer requires as many as 2 Million soldiers, such as in WWII. America no longer requires even 1 million, or 500,000. Numbers of active military are dropping annually because the tactics of war and protecting America has changed. The methods to utilize military strengths and successes has improved by the advent of technology. Apparently, what a unit of several soldiers could perform in the past is accomplished by one/two soldiers now. With automated weaponry and use of drones, our military has options in tactics neve seen before and it is continuing to evolve. This is why President Obama sees that an opportunity for America may use to please the public reducing numbers of military and at the same time increase the protection and strike force that America can option.

Even if President Obama was not the current president, this action to reduce personnel would be done by someone else in office. However, the main point here is President Obama trying to make clear is America will continue to hunt down terrorism around the world. Make no mistake about it, let your guard down and you will experience the horror of Pearl Harbor, 9-11, and Lebanon (Marine barracks). I remember the enemy in Vietnam would use children carrying a shoe box inside was a bomb to take out our soldiers. The soldiers unknowingly being kind and generous would allow that child to approach, thus child and soldiers were killed and maimed as a result of the cowardly act of the enemy. This is terrorism and is no different around the world. For any person to even think a strong military is not required, let see you go unprotected around the world and see how long you survive. It's not fair to criticize against military strengths and having to choose your country to visit. Let see you go around all the middle east countries and throughout Africa, and Pakistan, Iran and into Indonesia. Americans are targets around the world, because terrorism sees it profitable to manufacture terror.

Support our Armed Forces, Defense Department, Security Initiatives and support our America. If not, why are you here in this country?

Again you are a "militarist" and does not know any difference because you are totally brainwashed; congratulations. Statements like: If not, why are you here in this country? are typical you. You are also an "import" unless you are an American Indian. The only thing I try to do, is getting some common sense into your head on how other countries manage their safety and don't glorify "invasions" and "killing" others all over the place including the killing taking place in your own country, because of "money" and "politics". Stupidity reigns here; not common sense.

The more drones we use the more "terrorists" we create; even these simple things you do not seem to understand
We as a matter fact are the cause of terrorism, due to our "arrogance" and "greed" and "foreign policies" which have in general the oposite effect.

I think this is the right thing to do. How long can we invade, drop, post-up, and try to change the world to our way (politically speaking) of thinking? There are few places in the world that just plain stay out of everyone's business. And with that comes down to earth, happy people. I'm not saying we should drop our military and start growing flowers. I am saying that this country needs a total overhaul in how we act, do business, and puff our chest at every little thing.

It's amazing how just having a conversation with someone from, let say Canada, can open your eyes to this subject. Totally different way of thinking. A way of which I applaud in many ways.

I think once we drop the mantle of world policemen and unless our interests are directly threatened then we should await UN directions if its a humanitarian cause and then we should along with other UN Nations to resolve those issues, there also certain Treaties that also must be looked at if we are to defend other Nations as well, as for now , our present administration sucks at foreign relations, the argument could be made that we shouldn't be where we are but it doesn't matter now, what matters now is the intent and the implementation of any new Foreign Policy to be precise in what are our expectations of any Government that we get involved with either by trade agreements or by Mutual Defense Pacts, not this policy of a little bit here and later a little bit more, and then see what the political polls say before we go any further.

..."I think once we drop the mantle of world policeman and unless our interests are directly threatened then we should await UN directions if its a humanitarian cause and then we should along with other nations to resolve those issues"...

Here's someone who doesn't see it that way: "AMERICA MUST ALWAYS LEAD ON THE WORLD STAGE. IF WE DON'T, NO ONE ELSE WILL."--President Barack Obama yesterday in his speech at West Point. "LEAD" meaning meddle and interfere...when we decide to, of course.

Seems like we plan on being the "worlds policeman" for the forseeable future, at least the next 2 1/2 years.

And as far as the UN is concerned, they are definitely not looking out for our best interest, so UN "directions" should be weighed and carefully considered. The UN actually does some good on some humanitarian relief missions, but their peace-keeping missions are often disasterous.

..."our present administration sucks at foreign relations"... yes there's no doubt about that, we suck all right. Whether it's drawing RED LINES in the sand in Syria and making empty threats which we will not back up, to our relations with Russia on the Ukraine affair, Iran, N Korea, the endless, useless war in Afghanistan...yes we suck.

But we are still going to "ALWAYS LEAD" as bad as we are at it.

Hopefully Queen Hillary, or whoever the next president is will be better. They can't possibly be worse, can they?

If we drop our guard like Dutch suggests and let the terrorists run free killing whoever and whatever they like, than I assume Dutch expects all of us to just open our arms and be targets for anarchy and terror. There is stupid than there is "STUPID". I'm glad there are more educated and intelligent people around maintaining some resemblance in order protecting America. People who criticize the way our military performs and many who never served in harms way are just the mindset for letting America's enemies into our borders and letting them do as they will. America has an significant number of enemies all ready in organized crime, criminal business and those that prey on our people. We don't need to experience more attacks from abroad inside America. America needs to stand guard, attack and defend when required, and eliminate threats against America. If your one who believes, there are no threats, you must be one of those reading too many comic books. Dutch must fancy "Spiderman", because he writes many times on this character, so he must read a lot of Spiderman for his intellectual ability.

AMC; I guessyou have no clue whatsoever how the rest of the world lives; you solely are a typical self centered person who only absorbs what the media, church, army throws at you.
Lets start with your statements; "let the terrorists run free" did I say that? No I said change our foreign policies in order not to create more terrorists.
Terrorism has a cause; take away the cause. We've got plenty of weird sects in this country, like in Pensylvania, Utah, Scientologists etc. they do not attack us either. Sects outside the US either Muslim or Hindu or something else hate our guts because we "holy" Americans will determine and tell them what to do or bribe their leaders or supply the leaders with our weapons to kill them. Those people lack education; in order to change their fanatism and isolation in this world, killing them won't help, because the situation in any such country stays mostly as it is. Take as an example Egypt and Iraq; we tried to impose our way of life there; it does not work; both countries are in much worse turmoil then before. Etnic groups etc. will keep fighting each other.

Obama is correct related to Syria; hands off policy is the best; because mostly we choose the wrong party to support; the oposite party then may become or create terrorists against us etc etc. Meddling by us in most past cases did not help anyone except may be some persons who benefitted money wise of our meddling. Do me a favor and start studying human behavior through the centuries; especially in countries far from your bed.

Like the French say" L'histoire ce repette" then also the old saying "action" creates also an "reaction" Thus all our "actions" around the world will certainly create "reactions" one way or another.
Thus AMC, I suggest you visit Mali, Somalia etc. and keep your eyes wide open and observe on how these people live and what we do for them; not much good I guess; here is our present to you because you are poor have no food, live in heat, sand, no water, no airco, no fridge, are not christian, have a corrupt government etc. but we will provide a drone (worth a million) to kill you. Wow. For sure they will love us!!
