The world has lost an icon after famed author, poet, and activist Maya Angelou died at her North Carolina home this morning, leaving behind a linguistic void that will be impossible to fill. Her breakthrough book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" exposed the Jim Crow south in a powerful, first person account to millions of Americans and was one of countless individuals who helped spark and usher in the Civil Rights movement.

Angelou's powerful description of the systematic racism which permeated our society not very long ago helped to put a face on who the Jim Crow laws were affecting. Many Americans knew about the systemic racism in the south, but Angelou found a way to turn personal tragedy into a teaching moment for our country. For that, and countless other reasons, she will always be remembered.
