Kurt Eichenwald, Newsweek, May 15, 2014: The Plots to Destroy America

This article is of interest to those who are amused by conspiracy theories...and those who believe in conspiracy theories. Probably all of us at one time or another delved into a conspiracy theory and accepted its basic premise.

I won't paraphrase the article. Read it and then we can discuss. There are a few ads that interrupt the text, but keep scrolling down.

    The title is appropriate...

When even the website about Common Core says that the Newsweek article is wrong, is it any wonder people start believing in conspiracy theories?

From the Article... "Common Core teaches none of those things. In fact it pretty much teaches nothing - There is no curriculum, no imposed method of learning, no books that must be studied. Indeed, the only materials every student is expected to read in Common Core are the Preamble to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address" (Bold mine)

From http://www.corestandards.org/about-the-standards/myths-vs-facts/ (The website made specifically about and supporting it...) "The English language arts standards require certain critical content for all students, including classic myths and stories from around the world, America's founding documents, foundational American Literature, and Shakespeare." (Bold Mine)

Seems to me Newsweek might want to check their facts before starting a conspiracy theory of their own...

I did n't read it; however we do not need plots to destroy this country; it is already being destroyed by the way it is run at the moment; check the "gook box" in the evening; a killing, a shooting, a robbery; little kids grabbed; corrruption cases, texting behind the wheel, corrupt politicians, politicians on drugs, voting fraudes, local terrorists, road rage, religious sects, grazing rights wars, robber barons, stock market manipulations, polution etc etc.

What I got out of the article is how people are so easily duped into believing conspiracy theories about just about anything, no matter how crazy. It is almost fascinating how a conspiracy theory can be born and spread so quickly through the internet. Alex Jones and Glenn Beck are the kings of the conspiracy theorists, but their motive is primarily money...catering to a niche audience that needs to be continually fed outrageous allegations with no basis in fact.

I expect many of those right wing militias must listen to Jones and Beck.

It would be interesting to study the psychological and neurological aspects of people who live within the conspiracy theory bubbles. Many of them may just as well come from another planet. Maybe that study has been done...I'll have to check.

Yes "Schmidt" a lot of people here live in a bubble; contrary to people in Finnland I guess. Since I came here I always had the feeling that people here fall for all kind of nutty things; like if it is in the media or wikipedia they presume it to be true. Also if the government says "this will keep America safe" they believe that as well. Of course they believe everything the church tells them and if the NSA or Military says there is may be a threat then they hide in the closet for sure.

A lot of that article implies that most conspiracy theories are FALSE, & I guess most of them are. But this line of reasoning does make it totally impossible to convince anybody when one is REAL. For instance "Area 51" is REAL, & exists out in the Mojave Desert of Nevada - heavily guarded by the US Air Force. People really do work there on some acknowledged top secret projects.

When it comes to US Govt "conspiracy" theories, the John Birch Society is REAL. It was founded by Robert Welch in 1958 & I have read their (once secret) Membership Manual (called the Blue Book). It was printed by Western Islands Publishing (Belmont, Mass) since 1959.

In the 17th printing, of the Blue Book, on page 169 --- is the National Council of the JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY: (In this particular year, they
have listed 26 members of the Council) ---- it may vary from year to year, as some leave & new ones are added:
----------For brevity, I will just list a random few: 8 of them:

Mr. S. J. Agnew (Agnew timber & plywood in Wash, Oregon & Calif. & T90 ranches in Washington).

Mr. Carlton Beal (Texas OIL business: American Petroleum Institute. (wrote books on mining & metallurgy).

Mr. Frank Cullen Brophy (Libby Fruit Packing; Chmn of Bd of Ariz Banks; founder: Commonweal Magazine).

Mr. Stillwell J. Conner (Pres: Modern Sleep Products Co. in Wisc; a JBS recruiter & leader in Chicago, IL).

Clarence E. Manion (Dean) of Notre Dame Law School; weekly TV & radio show; (200 stations), & author.

Thomas Parker, M.D. (Doctor & Surgeon in Gen'l Practice for Greenville, S.C.; a President of the AAPS.

Mr. J. Nelson Shepherd (Pres of Midwest-Beach Co) Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bd of Nat'l Assoc of Manufacturers.

Charles B. Stone III (Lt Gen USAF); Cmdr-14th AF in China; business executive in southern California.

---- I could easily add the additional 18 names to this list, but will not do it, now, to save time & energy.

The John Birch Society has been very active in America since 1958, to influence our elections, & manipulate our
votes, by extreme propaganda, telling lies continuously, to mold our electoral opinions heavily toward the GOP.

The JBS started printing & distributing election literature AGAINST JFK as soon as he took office, in 1961, & by Nov
22, 1963 --- they had placed ads in the Dallas newspaper saying "JFK Wanted for TREASON" -- & they already had
thousands of TX people "hating JFK" & wishing something horrible would happen to him. Even Catholics who were
brain-washed to hate JFK, even though he was our first Catholic President. The Birch Society had taken advantage
of all our media, (radio, TV, & newspapers) to spread the "lies" & disinformation, saying that JFK was a communist.

NOTE that the Birch Society National Council (some of which was listed above) is composed of very wealthy business
people, with lots of money & influence. (LOTS of GOP wealth & very influential positions), Most of them had been told
millions of LIES, by the Birch Society leadership (like the Founder, Robert Welch). He & his family candy business had
been the source of his wealthy lifestyle. But he studied literature from Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, & others to learn the best
methodology to weaken our govt, and how to takeover the United States of America. One of the first things he would
need would be a powerful PROPAGANDA network, (this idea from Goebbels in Nazi Germany). So then we see the
JBS getting into radio broadcasts, building up "secret cells" of US citizens meeting weekly, to be fed propaganda that
would brain-wash them against our "liberal" ideas, & turn them into subversives, trying to destroy our whole US govt.

It even involved married JBS couples infiltrating churches to spread the "Birch line" into the congregation, until eventually you would hear
lying Birch accusations coming straight from the pulpits. Keep in mind, this process took nearly 50 years, (2 generations) but it was very successful. Also, I did not get all my knowledge from reading, but I KNEW actual Birch members, & how fanatical they were. They were always after me to join, & sending me Birch literature thru the mail. One time at an "innocent" gathering in Los Angeles, it soon became a recruiting session, as one host got out a few suitcases of JBS literature & started giving me the "Join Birch Now" speech.

I was "neutral" right then, so I did listen carefully to his ideas. Then he said "this nation is NOT A DEMOCRACY" & never was intended to be one." RIGHT THAT MINUTE I knew what a horrible trick he was trying to play on me. What a horrible LIE he was telling, maybe to hundreds of innocent (uneducated) people. I was so grateful at that moment that I had the most wonderful Govt teacher in high school, who taught me all about democracy, & what an incredible legacy we had from Athens, Greece in 500 B.C. // As (one of our founders) Thomas Paine said, "What Athens was in miniature, America shall be in magnitude." -- Thomas Paine was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson & Benjamin Franklin. He was the one who wrote "Common Sense" which helped the colonists win our American Revolution.

Killing Kennedy was thought necessary to help the GOP get into power. The Kennedy family had at least 3 brothers who were ready & able to take the helm, as all were well educated men, & raised to understand govt operations - & their father had been U.S. Ambassador to England. It was an enormous pain to the GOP, to think of a delay of 12 or 16 years, before they would get THEIR chance as President. So they thought if they could just make the people HATE the Kennedy's it would make the GOP rise to power that much faster & easier. But it was even easier & much quicker if they just killed JFK. On Nov 22, 1963, pamphlets were distributed all over Dallas, saying "Kennedy Wanted for Treason" with a mug-shot of the President's head, & lots of (false) accusations against him. Also, there was a huge headline in the Dallas Newspaper saying much the same slanderous things.

Later both the anti-Kennedy pamphlets and the headline in the Dallas Newspaper were checked out by the Warren Commission, in a study of
the assassination. ** "The "Wanted for Treason" poster that had appeared all over Dallas ... the man who created the handbill, Robert Surrey, was a right-wing activist and associate of Major-General Edwin Walker." ("The General, [who was a] darling of the Dallas media, a hero of the John Birch Society, was once again in the news.")#1 --- // "In 1964, mother sent me a booklet titled "The Assassination Story" which was a compilation of articles published in the Dallas Morning News & the Dallas Times Herald, (Nov 15 - Dec 11, 1963). It was the work of the same R.A. Surrey, & his American Eagle Publishing Co., who printed the "Wanted for Treason" handbills.#2 ---// "The Warren Commission also took an interest in the full-page "Welcome Mr. Kennedy" ad in the Dallas Morning News. They talked to Bernard Weissman who admitted to them that
the cash for the ad was given him by Joe Grinnan, a coordinator of the John Birch Society.#3 --- //

**NOTE: #1, #2, #3, are excerpts from: “Wrapped in the Flag” by Claire Conner, Beacon Press, Boston, 2013, (pages 115-116).

Claire Conner has said many times that she thinks it likely that the Birch Society was involved in the assassination of JFK. She is very well informed about the JBS since her parents were leaders & recruiting members of the JBS -- & her father was on the National Council of JBS.

Thanks, Dutch -- I have been "working hard" the last few days. And I don't get paid one dime. Maybe I am in the wrong business!! : ) But at least I choose my own hours & can snack anytime on the job. (looking at old candy wrappers & Cheetos bags all over the floor). It is such a great life just having the freedom to say what we want (here on the Hub) & breathe some fresh spring air. How are YOU doing? Stay away from San Diego ; )

Hey, L. A. Citizen: What's up? I hear it's "smokin" out there. What a mess. I used to hang around Long Beach & Santa Monica, once upon a time. Loved the whole scene. But I really hate to hear about the drought & serious fire conditions out there. It is just like a paradise, otherwise. Please
keep yourself safe. And whatever you do, don't inhale. (ha)

like I tried to tell some of these haters in this forum.....I'm working class. Fires, floods, and severe heat affect the rich here in sunny Southern Cal. I'm safe in my great city.... and thank you. yes it is a paradise. It was a hundred degrees today. Had my six pack of stella and a bag of chicharones (pork skins)

Told my job I needed to take a mental health day off. I may not be on very much longer. I've got the three wise white boys (moderators) in this forum playing censorship gods and protector of the zealots. its almost like dungeons and dragons

Sure I stay in sunny FL; floating in the pool with a nice drink in the hand falling asleep and dream about all the Americans halucinating in la la land.
