Mother's Day began as a small grassroots movement by a daughter who wanted to honor her recently deceased mother and culminated when President Wilson signed a proclamation in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor and recognize mothers. While we can thank Ann Jarvis for starting the tradition of honoring her mother, the real reason behind the creation of Mother's Day was more political than anything else. It is possible to argue that President Wilson was blatantly pandering to a demographic he lost handily to in the 1912 Presidential election. He may have begun to recognize the electoral value of having women on his side and calculated that having a national holiday in their honor would benefit him politically going into the 1916 election when he was up for reelection. Whatever the true reasoning behind the creation of Mother's Day, it has undoubtedly morphed into a national holiday celebrated by millions of mother's around the country. How is everyone planning to celebrate the day this year?
