There's a few bad things in the news.

    1. Nigeria Apparently 20 (corrected - well over 200+) girls were kidnapped (from a school I believe). The person ('s) who claimed responsibility went onto the net and said I have your kids and I'll be selling them because there is a market for human beings. Unbelievable !!!!!! I'm not a fan of social media but many have heard about this story and went onto social media to complain about the fact the Nigerian govt. was doing next to nothing. All the negative attention has caused the govt. to suggest that they're going to find the girls. Finally a value to facebook.

    2. I saw a show last night on HBO. The show is called VICE. It's HBO's 60 minutes type show. They spoke about how in India, women have virtually no rights and no worth. They spoke about a 12 year old girl who was raped and another young girl who was killed. The police are worthless. They do nothing, they take bribes, they won't speak to victims or their families. They sometimes offer to share part of their bribe with the victims family. They suggests to the victims families that the "settle" with the offender. Usually between 150.00 - 400.00 (usd equiv.) is offered and if not accepted, the victims family is threatened to be killed (by the offender). If I was Mr. Obama, I would halt all trade until they address these human rights violations. That is freaking third world actions

    3. (Virginia) I don't have the details (just saw the end of the story on CNN) an 8 year old boy was killed while trying to protect his 12 year old sister from being raped. He's my Hero. A teen was charged. I very much hope the teen is tried as an adult. Crazy Crazy World.

Tony you are right in your comments about the kidnapped girls but wrong on the numbers. Most accounts put the number at between 250 and 300 girls taken and who knows how many are still alive and well. Maybe not many, there are already reports that the abductors claim that at least two have died from snake bite.

The "leader" of the group responsible is another of those "Peaceful Muslims" and has claimed that they are his slaves and he will sell them for as little as $12 each. The ones that have survived, that is. How many have been raped, beaten, and brutalized in the last few days? No one knows...

The real tragedy is that this happened several days ago and the media has mostly ignored it. Talk about a "war on women!!!"

I have seen a few episodes of Vice, and it's pretty good.

    jamesn,

I just saw the Nigerian story on the nightly news and you're correct about the numbers. The leader says that Allah is telling him to sell them. As we approach "Mothers Day" it seems the world is being very disrespectful towards the female gender.

I'm glad that you enjoy Vice. I like it very much as well. Bill Maher produces the show.

And certain people (also on the site) state religion saves your butt; just ask those girls.

It's all about the business of Prostitution. These girls will most likely be located in some brothel in Europe, probable Netherlands, which reports 80% of their prostitutes are from other countries. I reported before on Prostitution, which many of you deny it's happening. It's a good bet these girls are already heading to Europe, Asia, or even America. There's nothing legal about prostitution however you want to put a condom on it.

Sorry to disappoint you again; prostitution is very well regulated in the Netherlands; not just anyone can be injected into the circuit. Also it can not expand; so where do you place 200 plus females who do not speak the language. Sorry I think more or less they will end up in other Islamic states/countries.

    AMC,
I watched the Academy awards (well about 30 minutes of it) this year....after winning the Oscar for the (Very good) movie: 12 years a slave....The director spoke of how slavery is alive and well today. Google it, you might be surprised. Many are used in Central/North central Africa. That's probably where these girls are. Pakistan has slaves....(yet we give them huge foreign aid to let us Drone kill some suspected Taliban, you would think that with slavery being used we wouldn't fund such a country. India has some slaves. It's called something other than slavery but it definitely exists, even today.
Very poor people don't count. Slave away !

I would suggest you read "Call to Action" by President Jimmy Carter. This book addresses the issue of violence to women worldwide. I was shocked at the number of women who are abused, sold or killed with no justice for the victims. The number of women who are raped at American universities with no action taken against the rapists is unbelievable...the crimes against women worldwide are terrible, but the idea that this goes on in our country is appalling.

Pollwatch, I agree that the violence against women is horrific and it is being shunned by ignorant people, mostly men who champion "Prostitution", a legal "Sex" industry, such as in Nevada & Netherlands, and the conservative right groups who remove women's rights, birth control, and centers for counseling and medical assistance to pregnant women. All this energy spent for the purpose to deny women rights and at the same time promote ED help to old men who don't have the courage to stand up for what is wrong in the world against women. I deplore the numerous drug commercials on TV about the various ED drugs and how glorifies an erection up to or over four hours that they urge you to seek medical help. Yea, who they kidding........the old men and men who just want to herald a marathon sex event, that's who. Most women just laugh and roll their 3 eyes, as to why they would even think of doing that with someone. The commercials make it look so good and enjoyable, but the advertisers are conveying a message to sell and sell big time to old men.

The world appears more about sex and money than ever before. The bad of all this, is that women are the end result for man's folly getting their selfish satisfaction. I feel bad about women in the world, which is another reason I advocate for more women in politics, law and business. Removing the old men makes perfect sense to me. Women just think differently and more compassionate than men.

If you go back on DemocraticHub and see the many threads on Prostitution, Women, Children and the slave industry, you will read where there has been some hot responses and long debate on the issue. What is clear, is many men stick to there sickness and deplorable view of women and a desire needing a sex industry to satisfy their cravings.

    1. Nigeria. 18 (more) girls were kidnapped the day before yesterday....... 150 people were killed and robbed last night. It's bad enough to kidnap children but to steal money and live stock (food) is salt in the wounds. The US is said to be involved in an effort to help. I won't be happy with anything less than a retrieving of the girls, elimination of the threat, and a plan for the local police/govt. to avoid this from happening again. A local was quoted on the news saying how they no longer sleep at home out of fear. They sleep in the bushes. That is sub-human and very sad.

AMC, You speak of better treatment of women. I agree 1000 %. You seem to be affixed on human trafficking and the sex trade. Most bad treatment of women happen in the neighborhood when the boyfriend/husband comes home drunk and via his feelings on inadequacy goes on to beat his wife. Violence is always bad.

No one was denying that there is a human trafficking issue in the world, and no one was denying that most of that human trafficking involves the slave trade. The disagreement arose around voluntary prostitution. Women and men who freely and willing choose to be prostitutes and/or in the porn industry.

The slave trade is awful and this incident is horrible.

The main part of this story, the main kidnapping, happened over 3 weeks ago. Why is it that it has just become a big story in the last few days?

What does that say about our media? If the girls had been white, would it have been more of a story? If it had been boys abducted? If anywhere other than Africa?

It is probably way too late to get these girls back. Maybe SOME of them can be rescued, but they've probably all been brutalized, raped, beaten, starved, and other things too horrible for us to imagine. Some are probably already dead, others already sent out of the country to different destinations, "married" off to who knows who... Life has very little value over there.

Most of the world ignored this story for three weeks and shame on all of us.

New info on kidnapping from Fox News. The US has apparently arrived to help in the search.(who/what and how many are not known) Who knows how that will go. Yes there has been too much time elapsed so the outlook is not optimistic. The local police (according to local sources) were notified 4 hours before the abduction. There were unknown people in town. Men on motorcycles were asking for directions to the school. The police sent 17 men to the scene but they were overpowered by the abductors. When you have large groups of people with powerful weapons gathering.... Bad things are going to happen. I would think that Nigeria has a military. What is it that they are doing with their time ? I think US intelligence should be in countries that are involved in modern day slave trade. It may be too late though.

It is never too late to get involved in stopping this horrific practice, it's a real shame that many of those third world countries who decry the practice but nevertheless profit from it. I think the UN should be much more involved than it is already, those countries practicing or allowing the practice to flourish should lose their vote in certain Assembly discussions, while not losing their membership but any aid from the UN should be curtailed until that particular nation shows a serious effort to stop the practice.

It is never too late to do the right thing, but why did it take 3 weeks for anyone to care?

If the US is willing and able to assist Nigeria in trying get these girls back, then let's give the help, and that's a good thing. Recon, transport, and intel yes, drone missile strikes or American boots on the ground in direct confrontation...I don't know. I think we should remain in a support role. It won't be easy in one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

I don't think there's any chance that they will all be recovered, and they've probably all been brutalized/beaten/raped...or worse.

The UN won't punish member nations for their human rights violations, as evidenced by their past history. The UN is perhaps even more corrupt than our US Congress.
