It gives me no great pleasure to write this, yet I can not rest until I do. Unemployment extensions ran out last December. Congress did nothing. They as a matter of fact went home. Home to celebrate the holidays. Behind the scenes thousands, rather a couple million of Americans faced the bleak prospect of the start of winter. That is with no job, no income source, in essence if they had no savings or credit they could rely on or relatives or some really good friends, there would be no real celebrating for them. Instead they could know they had better get very imaginative and come up with some ways to bring in money into their households and fast. Families with children to feed. Those that are on medications that are lifesaving to be paid for. It was winter so therefore homes that needed heating. All of this mattered not one bit to our congress. They merely packed it all in and went to their warm homes. They returned from winter recess and continued to ignore the plight of those Americans by not authorizing benefits once they returned. Yes there were Senate bills that stalled out right there in the Senate. Kudos to those Senators that tried. The months just flew by, somehow people laid off either made it or they didn't. But as we all know time waits for no man. It turns out there are many, many horror stories out there. Of how people have lost it all or just about lost it all. It's just not on our nightly news. So the poor has many new faces, and it was preventable. Fast forward to more recent times. Now. A Senate drafted bill passes through the Senate. But you see there really was no hurry. It landed in the house of representatives with a thud. Our house leadership will not allow a vote on this bi-partisan bill. Mind you democrats gave everything republicans asked for in the bill. Even shortening it's duration. Still it lies in the house of reps, just sitting there. And within days of arrival what does house reps do? Why of course all that hard work, all the heavy lifting, they were tired. So they went on spring holiday! Once again leaving now many more millions of jobless Americans wondering what on earth are they going to do if things don't change for them and soon. Speaker Boehner within days of the Ukraine situation called for a news conference. for what you ask? To address the crisis in the Ukraine, and more importantly, to assure them financial aid and assistance was on it's way. They needn't fear. Where was a special news conference called for American taxpayers. Reassurance to them that aid was on it's way, with warp speed? It didn't happen. Till this day it hasn't happened. This makes me so damn angry. Help for far off lands is taken care of within three (3) short weeks. Yet nothing for taxpayers. Even more recently after walking away from even allowing bringing a vote for unemployment extensions, Speaker Boehner announces he is going to Afghanistan. Really, and why? To push for US troops to stay there longer. So of course this means money is there to kill people. But for former taxpayers out of work now. Not so much. Wow, I mean really, does this speak to what our elected officials hold as priorities or what. You could know that by now my anger is more like outrage. This has run a bit long and so now I will conclude. But now let me finish with this, congress get a clue, get your priorities straight! Many are hurting right here. You need a good cause to help and assist with? Those that both need and deserve it, look no further than your own borders. Again Congress get your priorities straight! OH and by the way. Where oh where has your jobs bill gone. Oh where oh where can it be? Speaker Boehner and his commrades promised and ran on a jobs bill in the 2010 midterms. Then they made huge gains in the Congress but to date nothing. When is the congress specifically the Speaker going to show any leadership and that he cares about the people of this country? When will the rich have enough? When will the poor be poor enough? And to this point in time 54 votes to repeal the ACA? I guess the truth of it is, your plan is to turn your back on the new underclass you're creating. They can't eat, they have no homes, and if you repeal ACA they can't get medical help and surely they will just die quickly and get it all over with. But help is on it's way to the Ukraine! And keep our boys in Afghanistan! By God we have money and the will for those things! Something is very wrong here. Honestly this, this is not the America I grew up in. It's not even close.

I agree with you. However, let me clarify one point. It is not the Congress as a whole that is blocking unemployment extensions, but a group of extremists that call the Republican Party home.

President Obama and Democrats have been calling for and pleading for an extension of the unemployment benefits and all Boehner says is no, no, no. It makes me furious. These guys just tell lies after lies...and never have to pay the price.

Next he'll be telling the unemployed to "eat cake" as he hits the golf course and plans the next House recess.

Schmidt , yes that is correct. A tiny faction causing way too many problems. i do blame Speaker Boehner for not doing the right thing. He should in short order first convince as many house repubs to vote for the extensions, then allow a vote on it. Anything other than that for me the congress' priorities are not what they should be. Again I point out, what they managed to accomplish in three short weeks for the Ukrainian crisis. Funding was approved and signed off on in 3 weeks. But nothing for taxpayers that ironically will have helped pay for the aid sent abroad.

I think that my being apart of the millions of people whom benefits got cut Dec/28/2013, it has been a struggle, I've had to get support from family members, I've been homeless because I cant afford to pay my electric, or gas bill. I lost my job as a yard scanner/Rail scanner, and vehicle transporter after working for an organization contracted by Ford Motors Inc. for over two years. My union rep keep promising every week that he's going to get me back working and the clock is still ticking, I haven't worked sense june,15,2013, I have been trying very hard to get a job, im online from sun up to sun down at times trying to fill out application. Right after Christmas I had a real depression episode where I had to be hospitalized for a few weeks because I couldn't handle the stress of not working and being able to provide for my children, then I get out the hospital just to find that my benefits had been cut. It was a very cold, and difficult time for me and my children, if it wasn't for the depression meds, and the love of my children, I probably would have givin up. Still it being a struggle I continue day to day determine to find work, but its very hard when I don't even got $2.00 to get on the bus,at lease if they extend our benefits it will help us bounce back a little. its funny how every call that comes in when your applying for jobs is always an education specialist that do not speak well English, but they have jobs, and the American people that pay taxes,an vote cant even find decent employment. This is our United States of America.

Yes I can understand your situation. However as long as this government is more interested to spent money on drones and its killing rockets which kill people who you don't know, and who never even atacked us; to "keep us safe" (super BS) then they have no money nor time for you. There is plenty of work to do in this country; like infrastructure. Compared to Europe this is a third world country for the lower classes. So the only thing you can do is to vote the "greedy" one's out, which will be just about an impossible task, sorry to say. This country will need drastic cultural changes; if not, than also in the future many other lay-offs will occur because of corruption and mismanagement of just about everything.

Hello all. Here is what I am baffled by. Why did we not add the unemployment extension to the budget agreement at the end of 2013? We would have never given the Republicans a chance to block this life saving measure. Also I feel that if our leaders really wanted to pass this quickly they would have allowed a couple small Republican amendments to be added. I truly think and somewhat agree with the posturing on this account. The sour taste it is leaving in the mouths of voters should help us come election time. I was one of the long term unemployed. I lost my job when the Bonanza Steakhouse I was Managing closed its doors after 25 years. The franchise owner was getting old and did not want to sign another 10 year contract. I lost $581 of unemployment benefits a week on December 28th. To date I am out $9,296! I signed up at 3 temp agencies. I registered at the Pennsylvania Career link. I went to the employment classes . I went to 6 job fairs. I was signed up and had a profile on 9 different job web accounts. I put in 84 applications in person. I put in 217 applications online. I was either over qualified, under qualified or who knows what! I have a clean criminal record except for a DUI in 2006. I have been a Restaurant General Manager for a major company since I was 24 years old. I changed jobs 3 times in 12 years. Keeping the same title just moving to different concepts for more money. I finally was offered a part time position for a local fine dining establishment for $9 an hour! I took the job. I have been bringing home roughly $315 every 2 weeks!!! That is $630 a month. My unemployment was $2324 a month and that was only 58% of my previous salary. I finally landed a full time job last week. The starting pay is only $12 an hour but after my 90 day probationary period I will be going straight into General Manager training program. Anyway my point is that I am a 36 year old healthy young man. I have a very nice appearance and am well spoken. I still could not find suitable work for 13 months. So what is a person with none or some of my attributes going to do to find work? Something has got to change! I am sure there are people out there who are milking the system and don't deserve an extension. The majority of posts and blogs and stories that I see are almost identical to mine. I am married with 2 children(10-12). My wife works full time at Kmart and part time at the same restaurant I work part time at only she is a server. I have borrowed $6700 from my mother to date! Without that we would have lost our house(which we rent for $750 a month) and our only car. We would have had no money for propane(heat), Comcast(phone-internet-cable) which we didn't need the cable but it was cheaper to get the whole package. She made enough to get groceries. We didn't qualify for any public assistance, because they use your previous 3 months worth of income. Which makes no sense. Luckily the boys qualified for health insurance. So someone who has contributed to the government for the 21 years I have been working, got 6 months of unemployment then was cut off with 2 weeks notice and denied all public assistance!! At the same time my government quickly approves and expedites a BILLION dollars to the Ukraine. If that is not a FUCK YOU then I don't know what is!!!Enough about me. How is it that in a democratic society one man has the power of GOD and its not even the president. Where along the lines did we the Speaker of the house the most powerful man in the country? One person democrat or republican should not be able to decide what is going to be allowed to be voted on period. The arrogance displayed by the Speaker and his puppet master Cantor is sickening. I don't understand how their constituents aren't beating down the doors of their offices. Thanks for listening. I am always looking for some encouraging words and more knowledge to gain. Lets pass this unemployment bill so I can pay my mother back and help the millions who are still struggling.

Goldie's story is that of many caught up in this situation. Good honest people that just need a little help and a little more time. How the politicians sleep at night is beyond me. To find money for military weapons, funding for other countries when they are in need. And not to help those here in our own country is completely mind boggeling. When this happens you slowly and surely break people down. They lose all hope. They begin to think they have no chance at a normal life again. if hope is gone what remains? Go to Boehners' Face Book page, see him pretending to mow his own lawn.
Then look at the over 3,00 American citizens that have written him. some begging him to allow the vote on UI extensions. some cursing the day he was born. I don't know what this says about America riight now but it's not good. One man with so much power. is that democracy? Is this America's values? Let people lose their homes, let them starve in the streets. I wrote this to try to stir the dialogue. to bring a level of conciousness about that I don't see right now. So much of what's happening to some very good people is avoidable, if action is taken. As I said in my message to you goldie, i sincerely wish you all the best. and that this will turn around for you.

you absolutely nailed it! Nancy Pelosi made the statement , there would be no budget without unemployment extensions. Apparently she's one of the last good caring elected Democrats. What she did not know was a deal was being made that Dems would not hold out for the extensions. and the budget would be passed irregardless of federal unemployment ext. Also what i do not understand is look at how fast everything came together for Ukraine. Both parties had to sign off on it. and then the presidents signiture. Blows my mind. There was a bargaining chip Dems could have used as well. no emergency aid to a foreign country until we help our own. Who can make sense of this? I surely can not. Dems are letting us down as well. If people can not maintain their lives close to what is normal for them how can they efffectively search for work?
also let me say I am happy for you littledenny, you made it out of the abyss. congrats. and your point is well taken and duly noted. not everyone has going for them all the things you are blessed with. making it that much harder for them. our congress, (cough cough) is back to work this week, let's see if they continue to totally ignore what has grown to be several million Americans plight or grow a set and act.

It hurts as an American to see fellow Americans suffering and asking for aid of their government and nothing happens. It makes no sense our government constantly disagree on taxpayers issues, health benefits, and governmnent benefits, but when a country outside has issues we come to their aid like there country is the United States. It's funny how quick were ready to send our troops in to a country to fight. Speakeer Boehner how quick your will to help another country, but not aid in benefits. It's seems wrong.

That's it... I'm moving to Ukraine and maybe THERE I can get some help since it ONLY takes about a week for the US to approve a $BILLION there to help them. Ok, I'm not moving to Ukraine but the idea sure sounds MORE PROMISING than trying to get the arrogant house members that WE ELECTED to get some MUCH NEEDED HELP HERE in (the what once was Good 'ol US of A), BEFORE EVERYBODY LOSES THERE HOMES, CARS AND ULTIMATELY THEIR MINDS trying to UNDERSTAND WHY "WE" CANNOT get help HERE when HELP EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE PLANET/COUNTRY at the blink of an eye.
    HOW ABOUT AMERICANS!!!

Well we have sold off nearly EVERYTHING in our home too just to eat and pay the bills in hopes that the government (I.E. Boehner) will have some mercy on us unemployed workers OR BETTER YET FIND A REASONABLE PAYING JOB. We ARE ALL trying HARD to find work BUT even if I found a job tomorrow, we will most likely STILL LOSE OUR HOME because there is NOTHING left to sell!! Well, we did manage to locate some camping gear that MIGHT help us pay the $203 electric bill, hopefully BEFORE they shut it off. Other than that, ALL that is left now is our bed and a 22" tv. We sold our entire bedroom set (our clothes are now in storage bins), we sold our dining room set (we eat what little food we have on snack trays), we are sitting on fold up chairs to watch our little tv because we sold our entertainment center, couch, love seat and all tables just to survive another day. There really is NOTHING left to sell and we are at rock bottom. Plus we had to basically GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY on Craigslist for about 35% of original cost. The only thing we can do now is GIVE OUR HOME away for pennies on the dollar to some real estate shark just DROOLING ALL OVER THEMSELVES for the opportunity to steal it away and believe me it's gonna be SOON if this bill doesn't pass in literally like 2 weeks. This is the FIRST time I EVER collected unemployment in my whole life too and ALL THOSE YEARS I PAID IN AND ALL THAT $$$ and that's ONLY good for a lousy 26 weeks??? This is just WRONG on so many levels. PLEASE PASS this bill!! We are ALL HURTING!!

HowAboutAmericans -- Your personal story is gut wrenching...slowly having to give away your life's belongings just to survive. Have you shared your story with your Representative, Charles Dent? I notice Dent has introduced an alternative unemployment benefits extension bill. That bill like so many others that Republicans introduce ties the extension to a grab bag of things that Republicans want, like the approval of the Keystone pipeline. In effect he is holding the extension of unemployment benefits hostage to laundary list of demands that have nothing to do with the benefits you have earned.

Examiner.com: House GOP Reps introduce alternative unemployment benefits extension bill

I wish you all the best in finding employment. The Lehigh area was especially hard hit in the recession, and although some construction jobs are being found now to reduce the unemployment rate, it still has a long way to go.

Sent to speaker of the house today:
PLEASE vote to extend unemployment! I am 60 years old and have worked all of ny life. Now due to so many jobs being outsourced I was first laid off from a company I worked at for 25 years and last November the company I worked at for 8 years went bankrupt. So my unemployment runs out in June and there are no jobs to be had. Also the affordable care act is a joke. No one in the middle class can afford to pay over $400 a month and a $2K deductable. I don't even spend $2,400+ a year even if I had no insurance.
Please know WE have not stopped looking for work there is nothing available that pays a wage you can live on.

Thanks for the info Schmidt, I will contact them and let them know what we are going through. Who knows, maybe it will be helpful. I should also include before and after pictures of the NICE home we ONCE had and had to basically give it all away on the CHEAP for a few bags of groceries and a few other basic necessities.

Well, a "little good news" somebody came over today and bought one of our tents, 2 coleman lights and a fold up chair for $100, so we are 1/2 way towards the $203 electric bill. Still no official shutoff notice yet, so we are still buying time until we sell the other tent, 3 sleeping bags and porta potty. Tick, tock, tick, tock...

Read in the news today that because of the EUC bill not being passed that somebody lost his mind and was arrested for threatening Boehner. I'm not surprised one bit and yesterday was THAT day. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if it happened again especially after YOU & YOU ALONE have successfully pissed off well over 3 million HARD WORKING AMERICANS AT THIS POINT!!! It IS enough at times to make you almost lose your mind because of the lack of caring displayed by our HOUSE of "representatives?" WHO are they really representing anyway? CERTAINLY NOT the unemployed for the past UNEXPLAINABLE FIVE MONTHS... Well, they DO represent UKRAINE (and QUICKLY TOO I might add), they found the time to open up a NEW investigation about Bengazi (admittedly a worthy cause to seek out the truth but still) and I'm sure they'll TRY HARD to find some other meaningless crap to occupy their time AND ACCOMPLISH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING SUBSTANTIAL UNTIL THEIR NEXT TWO WEEK VACATION.

HOW is it that ONE MAN (BOEHNER) WIELDS SO MUCH POWER THAT HE CAN EFFECTIVELY CONTROL THE ENTIRE STATE OF THE ECONOMY??? NEVER MIND who's running for president new term, we NEED TO EXAMINE WHO IS RUNNING FOR THE NEXT SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE!!! Can you imagine this clown as the ACTUAL PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES??? HOLY CRAP would we be in SERIOUS TROUBLE THEN!!!

Our government needs to RE-THINK the responsibilities and POWER given to that position. NO ONE MAN should have THAT MUCH CONTROL and if ANYONE, it should be the PRESIDENT, NOT the speaker of the house. WHY DO WE ALLOW THIS??? WHY CAN'T WE JUST VETO HIM?? (OK, it's just a hypothetical question...)

OK John Boy, how about you let us put this to a VOTE (YOU KNOW DO YOUR JOB!!!) and then we'll SEE WHO HAS OUR BACK THEN!!!

That's it for now... God Be With Us All Please...

It's difficult to understand the motives of Boehner's House. On April 7th, the Senate passed the Unemployment benefits extension 50-38 with Republicans Susan Collins of Maine, Dean Heller of Nevada, Mark S. Kirk of Illinois, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rob Portman of Ohio and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire voting with the Democrats.

However, Boehner is just not going to "give" this away by a vote. He and his Tea Party friends want something in return, so all the House versions of unemployment benefits come stacked with all kinds of demands...effectively holding the unemployed as hostages. This never used to happen to the degree that it is happening now. Extending unemployment benefits has always been a bipartisan effort. In Boehner's world it's now another political tool to extract demands...much like the government shutdown of 2013.

There are several House Republicans that have said they would support the Senate bill, but we don't know if there is enough support to get it passed. The Tea Party is holding tight, and they threaten and bully the more moderate Republicans to hold the line. Of course Boehner is the king pin that is holding that line. I suspect if he brought it to a vote in the House it would indeed pass.

Unfortunately the House just went on vacation (May 10-18) for a week. They won't be back at work until May 19th, so nothing will happen for the next week. Then they work four days and take another five day break. Then three days at work followed by another nine day vacation. And while they working, they will be spending all their time on Benghazi so no time to consider your needs.

I don't know if any of your representatives plan to hold town halls during those breaks. It would be a good time to attend one of those and voice your concerns. Or maybe you might bump into them at the golf course where they are meeting with their real constituents...the one's who write them big checks. Ha!

By the way, here is the House Work Calendar. The days colored in light brown are the work days. I count 112 total work days taken and planned for 2014...and 253 non-work days!

The non-extension of unemployment benefits is just one of the myriad of the recent failures of the 113th Congress, which is officially the worst Congress since Gallup first started taking polls of Congressional approval ratings in 1974. The approval rating of this particular Congress dropped to an all time low of 10% in October, during the government shutdown caused by the Tea Party.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/113th_United_States_Congress

The second worst Congress in modern times is the 112th Congress, which was the most politically polarized Congress since the Reconstruction era of the 1870's. This Congress also had record low approval ratings, By no small coincidence. the 112th Congress first started meeting on January 3, 2011, just a few months after the Tea Party achieved great success in the 2010 mid-term elections.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/112th_United_States_Congress

Using Schmidt's calendar as a starting point, the lowest paid members of Congress (who get $174,000 a year) were paid $1554 per day for doing virtually nothing to benefit most of the citizens of our country. The only people that seem to matter to our current Congress are the top 1%, which is why the Republican-led House and Ways Committiee in the House had the balls to vote last week to make the Bush era tax cuts permanent, which would cost our economy $310 billion in the next 10 years, and would not be offset by any other changes in the budget

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/05/07/tax-extenders-tax-breaks-not-paid-for-editorials-debates/8779161/

As the article above points out, the Democrats aren't entirely free of wrongdoing either, but the Republicans in Congress are by far the most irresponsible.

Oddly enough, the failure of Senate Republicans on April 28 to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over the next 30 months should actually be good news for the Democratic Party, since it is just one more example of why it's critical that both the House and the Senate need to be controlled by the Democrats and not the Republicans.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/minimum-wage-bill-dies-in-senate/

Where the Democrat Party hasn't done a good job is generating outrage in the voting public about the incompetence of the Republicans in Congress, a tactic that has worked well for FOX "news" and other conservative organizations. In fact, when I opened up this thread, the ad that first appeared at the bottom was a survey by Townhall.com, asking you to vote on which of Hillary Clinton's scandals was the worst.

Townhall.com is a conservative website that was started in 1995 (when Newt Gingrich, the guy who shut down the government the first time, was Speaker of the House). Initially. it was operated by the Heritage Foundation, but it was sold to Salem Communications in 2006. Salem Communications is described as a "Christian and conservative values" organization. The contributors to Townhall.com included a few "wacko birds" like Ann Coulter, Dinesh D'Souza, and Michael Savage. Its columnists appear frequently on FOX.

The original "wacko bird" (Ted Cruz) has also received ample coverage in Townhall.com:

    http://townhall.com/tags/ted-cruz/

The House voted 54 times to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act. When it finally became apparent that that was a foolish strategy (these guys are evidently slow learners) their attention has once again shifted to the IRS "scandal", and the Benghazi "scandal". By now, you would think that the Fast and Furious "scandal" was finally dead, but Darrell Issa still hadn't given up on that one as recently as January.

O'Reilly Factor host Laura Ingraham even went as far recently as blaming the kidnapping of the Nigerian school girls on Behnghazi.

You and I both know that Laura Ingraham's ideas about Nigeria are absolutely stupid, but here is a more unsettling fact:

in 2013, FOX "news" had the top 14 programs in total viewers, and the top 9 programs in the key 25 - 54 demographic. The number one program on cable TV was "The O'Reilly Factor".

The Emmy Awards were first awarded in 1949 to recognize excellence in broadcasting. Surprisingly, the FOX network has actually won a few Emmy awards, but the network has earned far fewer than any other network. The totals for all years is shown below:

Most wins for a network in every year

    NBC: 1012
    CBS: 910
    ABC: 704
    HBO: 460

    Fox: 163
