The Titanic Sunk 102 years ago tonight.

Seriously. You heard it on CNN first! The crown jewel of the White Star Line has fell to the ocean floor....102 years ago. It had the "BREAKING NEWS" tag and everything. You're welcome.

CNN is not the only network to overuse/abuse the "Breaking News" tag which is applied to WAAAY too many stories, but they are probably the worst.

I tuned in to CNN yesterday to see the "Breaking News" banner on the screen only to find out that the story was that "Analysts were about to begin looking at data collected from the robot submarine" in the missing airliner story.

CNN is STILL spending far too many hours of air time telling us that there is no new news on this story.

I guess we live now and have our present day "Titanics", like Flt 370, just yesterday a Korean Ferry, Mudslides etc. "BREAKING NEWS" the word is most of the time misused; if Obama's dog has flees, it is BREAKING NEWS !!

CNN's nosedive into incompetence is emblematic of a much larger issue materializing before our very eyes. The fourth estate has morphed itself into an entertainment industry whose sole focus is daily and weekly ratings released by the Nielsen Company. The rise of 24/7 channels coupled with the American public's complete disengagement from anything outside of their own bubble has brought us to where we are now.

The Unfortunate thing is that CNN is only following the lead of all the other 'news' channels out there who have thrown actual reporting completely out the window. It's really sad if you understand what Ted Turner's vision for CNN was and what his channel and so many others have become.

..."sole focus is daily and weekly ratings"... True. And why is that? MONEY. Ratings equals MONEY. The best (or worst) recent examples are MSNBC which put everything on hold for about 6-8 weeks to devote almost all their time to Chris Christie and "bridgegate". CNN has done almost as bad with the missing airliner for the last 6 weeks or so.

Another poor example is the ABC morning news show, Good Morning America which has morphed into a review of Dancing With the Stars, or whatever the latest Holloywood gossip is. It is more Entertainment Tonight than news, and it's not even close. Real news just gets a passing mention.

Watch PBS, it's not ratings driven like the rest of them.

I would think twice before saying PBS is not a ratings driven organization. They whore themselves out just like everyone else. The Koch brothers invest heavily in PBS and use their status to make sure the company skews their reporting in a way that benefits their line of thought.

They're not ratings driven to the extent that the rest of them are.

I guess they are small time whores, compared to the big time whores.

Probably everyone on TV is a whore to some extent, it just depends on the scale.

    Just my opinion.

When asked to describe television news as of late, reminds of the wisdom of either Samuel Clemens (aka) Mark Twain or W.C. Fields when it was asked of a rather attractive lady if she would sleep with him for $10,000, when she replied yes, he then asked what about for $1 dollar, she replied No, what do you thing I am , his reply was 'we know what you are but we are now discussing price. That to me is TV news reporting as it is today.

Remember when ? ........... I remember the start of the first gulf war. CNN was great !!!!!!!!!! They had THE coverage that the whole world turned to. That was good news coverage. Yes at some point they sold their souls..... but for a few weeks nobody could touch them. I still watch CNN because MSNBC and FOX are too obvious in their slant.
As for PBS, I am a really big fan. Same with NPR.

Tony you are completely right about Fox and MSNBC. I still watch all the networks, but you just have to realize the source, and what their agenda is. If CNN ever stops with the overwhelming missing airliner coverage, I will watch them more.

In the last few days the Nevada rancher showdown is a great example of how the story can be portrayed completely differently.

I agree with you about PBS but seldom watch it.
