Well, I just watched an episode of the show Vice on HBO. It spoke of the mass escalation of Rhino killing in South Africa. The reason is some old Vietnamese used to believe it had magical medicinal powers. It's since been proven that it is equivalent to your finger nails. However, many in Vietnam
now have much money. So buying these horns / or pieces of them, is now in high fashion. Like buying designer items. The cost of 100 grams of Rhino horn is now higher than the price of gold. It's a status symbol. It's smuggled into Vietnam. The govt. is slow to react. The numbers of Rhino are decreasing at an alarming pace. Since the price has gone up, the poaching has increased as well. Sometimes they tranquilize the animal and cut off the front of their face to get the horn. A slow painful death for the animal.
I tried to post a link by the BBC but that has been made more complicated. I do not know how to post a link....
I think this is an important topic though. Too often the wrong thing is done
    in the name of money.

I watched that as well. It was sickening to see what they do to the animals, then to have them wake up missing half of their face. Sickening... This adds another topping to my recipe of human hate. I would love nothing more than to go there, and do what they did to those animals to the people doing it. And every other animal abuser in the world. Senseless cowards.

Not much different than walking through the forest and coming to a deer kill with his hind quarters cut off. The hunters left the rest because they wanted only the fleshy hind quarters. The hind quarters are easier to carry on the shoulders and fits well in the freezer. It's also easy to come upon a big deer kill with just the head missing for a wall mount showing multiple points of a prized rack display. The remaining carcass minus head lies on the ground.

You need to also consider the black bear kills for their endocrine and sex glands. These glands get thousands of dollars per ounce on the black market sold to the orient. So, walking through a beautiful forest scene and come upon a little black bear split open exposing his insides.

There's all kinds of animals from tigers, lions and panthers to rhino's and elephants that get harvested. I was always taught you EAT what you kill. If that hunter eats what he/she kills than maybe more animals will get the respect they deserve. Mankind is supposed to be protectors of the animal kingdom managing the species. Just another example of greed and less priority on God's creation.

I tend to believe that desecration of animal life, & pollution of the atmosphere & water, are the
most awful and despicable actions of humans on the earth. At the rate they are increasing, it
makes enjoyment of natural land a horrific sight, instead of a peaceful experience. I would begin
to hate my fellow man for this brutal behavior, but I believe & hope MOST would never do that.

On the other hand, what CAN we do? Profit seems to motivate everything these days, & fewer
seem to have normal decent morality guiding their conscience. Maybe by advertising that the
horns of rhino's have nothing any better than chewing your own fingernails, could be helpful.

All this plundering of innocent animals, all this senseless slaughter, will eventually lead to a
day of reckoning. Nature will learn to retaliate. We will find a planet full of diseased animals,
and water impossible to drink. Then the air itself will be unbreatheable. Bye-Bye, humans.

Your typical hunter is no better than your average mass murder, in my humble opinion. No guns, no hunters (most of them are too lazy to hunt unless they can blow it away from a distance anyway)!

Yes the human race shows its ugly face; sorry to say the present day humans (with some exceptions) are no better than certain animals themselves.
There is no respect for nature or other living things the "ego's and the "me, me only" culture is exploding. Present day kids are way too much involved with their I-Pad or cell phone and have very little interest in nature; they rather go with their oversized wheels on their truck and ruin nature than to take care of it. So I fear for the future of this world; nature sure will take revenge; New Yersey's Sandy storm is just the beginning.

The thing people do not seem to understand that nature requires a "balance" when the balance is disturbed then things will happen, which will affect people's environment. This is applicable to the climate polution) as well as killing the wrong species of animals which creates an imbalance in nature so other animals will overbreed and has its effects etc. People will never learn.

.......and just when you think that animals are the only target of opportunity comes random shootings in the streets. Now in cities across America there's a new thrill to hunt and shoot drivers in vehicles. A favorite game for gun enthusiasts is to drive around highways and streets looking for someone to shoot. Maybe they can't find that rhino, big cat, or black bear, but they sure can find unsuspecting drivers to aim at and shoot. Imagine driving peacefully on a road and bullets come in your direction, hitting your vehicle, penetrating the door panels or glass and hitting you in the arm, leg or head. Now imagine, asking yourself where did that come from as the cars around you pass quickly without noticing your trauma. The people using their guns such as this violence is just hunting their animals. Yes, your the rhino, big cat, deer and black bear.

Strict Gun Control is demanded from common sense to mitigate these acts of uncontrolled rage. The people using their guns like the above random shootings must have a mental illness and/or just plain stupidity and lack of humanity.

Support Strict Gun Control and Mental Health Initiatives. I'll additionally will say on this thread, Support you State Conservation and Game Control Initiatives.

POACHER is the word for people who shoot rhinos for their horns. Not "hunter", POACHER.

CRIMINAL is the word for someone who drives around looking for someone to shoot drivers in vehicles. Not "gun enthusiast", CRIMINAL.

The vast majority of hunters are law abiding and eat what they kill or donate the animal to places which will process the meat for homeless shelters.

The vast majority of gun enthusiasts are law abiding people who don't hunt other people.

As always, there are a few who give a whole group a bad name. That's true for any group of people.

Maybe "Gun Enthusiasts" took down the Malaysian flight. You shouldn't apply your agenda where you want. It doesn't fit. Too much pollution - - - Maybe it will kill the "Gun Enthusiasts".... Human Trafficking is really bad, is it caused by Gun Enthusiasts ? Start a new thread if you want to make a point. I think your point is valid, just misplaced.

Tony I'm just clearing up the proper definition of a couple of words used previously on this thread.

You think it was a "knife enthusiast" who stabbed the kids at the school today?

I would classify him as a "criminal", at least until we learn more about him, then maybe other descriptive words can be accurately applied.

Sounds like all the victims will recover, thank goodness.

If someone were to remove all the ..."valid, just misplaced"... points that people post on this DemocraticHub, there would be a lot less content on here. Just look at all the threads which start out political and end up all about religion, and that's just one example.

    jamesn,
I rarely disagree with anything that you post. I agreed with your criminal/poacher post. I guess I was piling on a bit. Yes far too often things get off topic towards guns, or god.

I never liked hunting for sport, I was and still am a catch and release fishermen, although if it's biggie I will take it home and cook it!!. I never saw the need to sit in a duck blind or a deer blind and ambush some animal and then call it hunting, where my son lives ,there is a state park and since there are no longer any predators for the deer in the woods , the herds grow like crazy and every once in awhile the state has to cull the herds, the meat is taken to various shelters , these trophy hunters should consider that as an alternative to leaving the carcass of the animal left to rot in the fields or woods.

Tony Thanks, I think ALL of us get a little off topic at times, and I am as guilty as anyone.

I try not to complain about it, but sometimes on the threads which turn into a religious argument I mostly avoid them. This is supposedly a POLITICAL forum. Is anyone on here going to change their religious or non-religious views after they have the same exact argument for the 100th time? I don't think so.

It's just human nature to wander off topic and there are probably religious forums which get sidetracked by political topics. This same conversation in reverse may be happening on a religious forum somewhere.

On the rhino show on HBO I saw it and it was pretty bad. Money makes people do evil things, and in many other countries animal life (and human life) has much less value than here. I guess all of the rhinos will have to be locked up for their survival, as bad as that sounds.

The thing that troubles me the most is the killing of animals who's numbers are dwindling/facing extinction. Yet they mentioned that S. Africa allows some hunting of the Rhinos to raise money for the reserves. We should all make preserving species a priority. For future generations to appreciate an enjoy. And to maintain the bio diversity.
JC, I agree with your views on hunting and fishing. Not that you shouldn't ever keep your take, but eat it or contribute it to the needy. As you mentioned, deer repopulate at a steady pace. They could be hunted without problems. Hunting for trophy's is bad though.
