We've all seen a lot of crazy rumors about Barack Obama. On occasion, some of my relatives have asked me to check them out, and I've discovered that it normally takes just a few minutes to disprove them.

Although I use a wide variety of sources to disprove rumors, I generally use snopes or truth or fiction as starting points. If you analyze the data on the last 7 U.S. Presidents, you'll quickly discover that there have been more rumors about Obama than about any of the other Presidents on snopes. Here are the totals:

    Obama - 448
    George W. Bush- 202
    Bill Clinton - 168
    Ronald Reagan - 93
    Jimmy Carter - 17
    Richard Nixon - 46

A while back, I looked into the rumors on Obama when they totaled someplace in the low 300's. At that time, all but a handful were "FALSE". The balance were a mixture of truth and fiction.

Obama has also had 390 rumors published about him on truth-or-fiction:

The latest rumor to surface about Obama is that he is planning on running for a third term. The Tea Party adherent that I heard that from had heard it on faux news, but other conservative sources (randpaulreview, wnd, the dailysheeeple, teaparty.org, spectator.org, and obama2016electionnews) have also been spreading the rumor.

This one turned up as a mixture of truth and fiction on snopes:

By now, you would think that most people would be smart enough to not believe ANYTHING that they heard from conservative news sources, but since more than 40% of the population believes the earth is less than 10,000 years old, that's probably hoping for too much.

I checked your link to Truth or Fiction and did a similar search by typing the word Bush. Yes, I did come up the numbers you presented, HOWEVER many of those weren't 'about Bush' in the search I did, and many of the ones in the search you linked to weren't 'about Obama'. The problem with your assertion is that your search pulled up ANY TIME the word Obama was mentioned. Even if it was just to refer to time frame or someone who worked for him.

Having said that, I don't know for sure how many rumors there are about Bush vs. about Obama, but there are likely not as many as you presented. I can add some that aren't listed on the truth or fiction page against Bush... I did a search for "9/11 Bush" and no mention of Bush having ordered the twin towers be brought down is mentioned. "Bush Uranium" did not produce the rumor that the military, under Bush, lost over a million tons of enriched uranium. There are many rumors it doesn't list so your statement that Obama has more rumors about him is not necessarily true.

I think these numbers might be more indicative of the advent of the internet. Most of the rumors are from 'troll' mills.

Is it ay coincidence that the most rumors were about the only president who wasn't Lilly White ? Racist Hate mongers and quick to spread it thick. They'd prefer any president at all if they looked like they could be a cousin. No matter what they stood for.

Yes, it absolutely seems to be a coincidence. I would argue that the 24 hours news networks and internet are much more to blame. There was was steady rise between the number of rumors and popularity of those two things. There were probably many other rumors and conspiracy theories that never, ever got off the ground for the other presidents because they could not easily be blurted out to a massive audience.

Race has something to do with it, but Zach is right, it's the media of today that has the most to do with it. The 24 hour news cycle on cable TV and the internet are both to blame more than anything else.

I feel sorry for President Hillary or whoever the next president is.

If you tuned in anytime in the last 2 months and saw the 24/7 attacks on Chris Christie by MSNBC for example and whatever Fox thinks will get some ratings (IRS, Benghazi, NSA, Obamacare, the president lying about Obamacare...etc) on the other side.

It's almost all attack talk, all the time. More than 7 months until the midterms, and it will be hell.

I personally don't think race has that much to do with it. I feel there would be just as many attacks on any other president, they would just be about different subjects. Race just happens to a subject in this particular case.

Here's a question... If a rumor is true, is it still a rumor?

I would say rumors would tend to lean to the false side but be unverified. Once you verify it to be true I would say it's not a rumor

Rumors say that the Koch brothers will arrange a coup and make Palin President; and her dog Vice President
