As the article states, "when adjusted for age fluctuations, that represents a total of 12 deaths per 100,000 people – up from 10.1 in 2010 and the highest rate since 1996."
That compares with gun related death rates of 0.2 deaths per 100,000 people in Japan, 0.3 in the UK, 0.9 in Germany and 2.1 in Canada.
We have discussed this topic extensively in this website, to go with informed public discourse after every mass shooting. But the fact is that the gun lobby led by the gun manufacturers, the NRA, and Fox News has continued to the hold the upper hand in the messaging...or maybe I should say propaganda.
Even "common sense" gun regulations proposed by moderates in the Republican Party get spun as an attack on second amendment rights. We have discussed all kinds of ideas in this website. Politicians likewise have sought common ground on even very modest proposals, but none seem to get traction to go anywhere. It needs to be made an issue for the 2020 election, but Trump and his propaganda machine will make it a positive issue for him..."liberals want to take away your guns...your freedom...and blah, blah, blah." I am not hopeful but we need to keep trying.
