    shad,
The link takes you to what looks like a commercial. Do you have any input from a neutral site or publication ? I'd like to give it a chance but I'm not going to look it up. I think if you want to convince anyone you're going to have to offer something else.

Here are MSNBC links to the Chris Hayes original ALEC segment on his show tonight. They each have short commercials first.

Exclusive: How ALEC serves the right

    Why ALEC is so effective

I recommend watching these well researched segments presented in the Chris Hayes style. I should note that Arizona has covered some of the ALEC agenda in this website on several occasions, but Hayes pulls it all together.

Wow ! I did not know about ALEC. Those links were very informative. Thank you. It seems like money often leads to corruption. That seems like what is going on.

I caught that last night! Very informative, as usual. Also very disgusting and surprise, surprise ALEC had its filthy roots in the Reagan administration! I found one comment by the guy from DC (I've forgotten his name) to the effect that all pols are starry eyed individuals while running for office and when they get elected they think to themselves the system can't be that bad, I got elected and totally forget who put them in office and why. Does the name Obama ring a bell?

By now, we're all very familiar with the damage that ALEC has caused in our society (stand your ground laws, private prisons, SB 1070 etc) but the New York Times had a column this morning about the financial pain that ALEC has cost the taxpayers of Kansas:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/opinion/paul-krugman-charlatans-cranks-and-kansas.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=c-column-top-span-region&region=c-column-top-span-region&WT.nav=c-column-top-span-region

    here's the key paragraph:

For the Brownback tax cuts didn’t emerge out of thin air. They closely followed a blueprint laid out by the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, which has also supported a series of economic studies purporting to show that tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy will promote rapid economic growth. The studies are embarrassingly bad, and the council’s Board of Scholars — which includes both Mr. Laffer and Stephen Moore of the Heritage Foundation — doesn’t exactly shout credibility. But it’s good enough for anti-government work.

Thanks Arizona for sharing this. Of course you have provided many other links describing ALEC in the past, and if people really knew and paid attention they would be outraged...like we are. But you mention ALEC to anyone on the street and you get a blank stare.

Ditto for the Heritage Foundation. They publish all kinds of graphs and charts selling their story...all bogus. A few years ago I spend hours breaking down their graphs and they don't hold up. They are meant to deceive. Any college student can pick holes in them, but then they are not appealing to the educated, are they?

They romance the ignorant with supply side economic theory that has been debunked again and again.

    Schmidt:

As most of us are aware, ALEC wrote the "stand your ground" laws that have been adopted by 33 states.

According to a study recently released by the American Bar Association, states that have stand your ground laws have experienced an INCREASE in homicide rates. The Association recommends that states should either repeal their existing laws, or refuse to enact new (similar) laws:

    Arizona --

Thanks for sharing this Al Jazeera article. I find more trust worthy news in Al Jazeera than in most US media sources. You have summarized the key points, but to further drive home the point, I will extract a few lines:

AlJazeera, August 12, 2014: ‘Stand your ground’ states see increase in homicides

"The National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws, convened in 2013, conducted a comprehensive and multidisciplinary review of the impact of “stand your ground” legislation on public safety, individual liberties, and the criminal justice system.

"The 62-page report, issued on Friday, found that “stand your ground” laws, which vary from state to state, obstruct law enforcement, confuse law enforcement personnel, and disproportionately affect minorities.

"“Stand your ground” legislation has failed to deter crime, and, in fact, has led to an increase in homicides, the report said. States with “stand your ground” laws experienced an 8 percent increase in the number of homicides compared with states without such laws."

For many of us, the study findings come as no surprise. Yet the gun lobby and their agents in ALEC keep pushing this stuff because it is profitable. More gun violence always translates into more gun sales. Every time there is a shooting, gun sales go up...it's good for business. The stand your gun laws encourage more shootings not fewer shootings. Instead of walking away the emotions of the moment take over...a wild west "shoot the bastard" mentality with happy trigger fingers and no thought of retribution.
