Melissa Etheridge: I Need to Wake Up

Thanks to Eternal Flame for linking to this Melissa Etheridge music video on Climate Change under the Chris Christie thread. I have grabbed her link as a headliner for a new thread on Climate Change...who cares?

Certainly many of us care deeply. In fact I personally see Inequality and Climate Change as the two biggest problems that our society faces in the next few decades. Both trends need to be reversed, but let me focus only on Climate Change, and the broader question of why Republicans have largely become skeptics when at one time they were believers.

Joshua Greene in his recent book, Moral Tribes, describes how our brains are designed for tribal life. He cites studies by Dan Kahan and his colleagues on how our brains have evolved and are often in conflict (cognitive dissonance) when different parts of our brain are competing with each other. So in the case of Climate Change, the tribal influences of being a "Republican" trump any kind of facts or critical thinking even amongst the more educated members of their tribe. Furthermore, human emotional responses such as guilt, gratitude, and empathy can also be in conflict with the tribal loyalty.

Republicans views on climate change are predominately skeptical or outright denial despite the overwhelming evidence and concurrence amongst scientists that Climate Change is real. It wasn't always that way. In 1997, two out of 3 Democrats and 2 of 3 Republicans (67 percent for both) believed climate change was real and serious. Since 1997, support for Climate Change science has increased for Democrats to the 75 to 80 percent range while Republican beliefs have gone in the opposite direction to about 30 - 40 percent. It would appear that as scientific studies become more convincing, Democrats became even more supportive. The opposite occurred with Republicans. They abandoned critical thinking and became more tribal choosing to believe all the corporate (e.g. Koch Industries, Exxon) funded studies and think tanks that spent millions to cast doubt on the science, not to mention their propaganda outlets Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones.

That's not to suggest that Democrats are also subject to tribal influences, but they seem more "evolved" when it comes to critical thinking and emotional traits such as empathy.

So getting back to Melissa Etheridges song on Climate Change...We need to wake up! Also President Obama needs to elevate Climate Change in his day to day rhetoric and not just leave it for honorable mention in his State of the Union speech.

    Thanks Eternal Flame for sharing...

San Jose Mercury News, January 25, 2014: California drought: Past dry periods have lasted more than 200 years, scientists say

I just read this article. For many I suppose the words, "scientists say" will immediately invite a bunch of skepticism. Nevertheless I'll extract a few lines:

"California's current drought is being billed as the driest period in the state's recorded rainfall history. But scientists who study the West's long-term climate patterns say the state has been parched for much longer stretches before that 163-year historical period began.

"And they worry that the "megadroughts" typical of California's earlier history could come again.

"Through studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers have documented multiple droughts in California that lasted 10 or 20 years in a row during the past 1,000 years -- compared to the mere three-year duration of the current dry spell. The two most severe megadroughts make the Dust Bowl of the 1930s look tame: a 240-year-long drought that started in 850 and, 50 years after the conclusion of that one, another that stretched at least 180 years."

With long droughts in California's historic past, we certainly cannot attribute the California drought directly to Climate Change...at least not yet. But if California's drought continues, we should all worry. California's agricultural industry will be especially hard hit.

    Anyone care?

Yes nature is quite simple; if we would be running this planet as it should be; i.e. a balanced system between nature and us, then nature will not interfere. As soon as things get out of balance; like overpopulation, cutting our forests, poluting our oceans and water ways, industry, emissions of all our cars and planes worldwide, etc. In nature there is a simple law, if it gets out of balance, like with the dinosaurs ( I guess they ate much,ha ha) then things will happen in order to either get the balance back or uses our own polutants to kill of the species; to get it back into balance. That is why cancer is getting a bigger threat all the time due to our unnatural chemicals and polution in everything.

regarding cancer......won't evolution at some point make us immune to cancer....such as the plague in Europe????????

L.A. keep on dreaming; due to the fact we ourselves produce so many polutants and chemicals in our food and water as well as daily stress that even if your wish would come true, then certainly another even worse decease will pop up. A human body can only adapt to something over time; I doubt if it has the time to adapt to all our continuous polution in everything a living creature needs to be healthy. All our food is not "natural" anymore, neither the air we breathe is clean and has the right amount of oxygen; our water is clorinated; not natural either etc etc. I doubt if you sit on the 405 in your car if you breath clean air. So the over population of this globe will eventually lead to things like the black plague, to get the species back into balance.

Or we may do it ourselves by starting WWIII.

Recently a little girl was cured of leukemia by using the aids virus, they tricked the virus into attacking cancer cells not T-cells

evolution didn't kill the dinosaurs..... an asteroid did. They were here millions of years before us. Their appetite had nothing to do with their own demise.....random occurance

It's difficult to imagine global warming when the snow is up to your butt and the mean temp. is below your birth weight. and the weather forecasters are predicting more of the same for the foreseable future.

Well perhaps your imagination might be different if you lived in Australia.

The Guardian: Catastrophic fire danger alert in South Australia as heatwave sweeps country

Climate Change is about a long term trend of increasing average GLOBAL temperatures with an increased propensity for extreme weather events as the amount of moisture in the atmosphere increases.

It's called winter........summer is coming. As the earth heats up every morning........ when the sun rises billions of charged particles enter the atmosphere from evaporation (ocean surface) that the sun causes. The energy from these charged particles at some point must be released (violent storms) thus creating a wetter, hotter planet...making this process worse on the next go around. The summer months is when climate change effects the planet.

As more water enters the ocean (storms) it de-salinizes the oceans by slowing the currents that warm-up other oceans....thus causing colder winters

I didn't need an explanation thanks for the explanations anyways but as I said it's hard to imagine global warming Etc. It does seem a lot easier to believe in global warming when your caught in a drought or a long hot spell but like the old adage says when your up to your ass in alligators its hard to remember your job was to drain the swamp!

I wonder if anyone noticed the headlines a few weeks ago where it said that both China & Russia were sending up huge lazer beams into space to attempt to control the weather? And then we get all these crazy freezing patterns, & the Arctic Vortex & ships are stuck in the ice at one of the Poles, and can't get loose for a few weeks, even with "icebreaker" ships.

The idea of sending lazer beams into the stratosphere is not exactly new. Do you guys remember HAARP? That is located up in Sarah Palin's old stomping grounds. ALASKA. The HAARP is run by many agencies, including a couple in the Military. If you see 2 military agencies at one place, it usually means something BIG is going on. For ONE, they were working on Weather Control. They did experiments with over 180 arrayed antennas
that have probably increased to 200 or more by now. If they force energized strata upward, it leaves a vacuum, which is then filled by inrushing air, which actually "moves" the Jet Stream -- & that jet stream controls the weather.

Several years ago, the United Nations made a rule that "no nation shall be allowed to use weather as a weapon, against other nations." This means that the U.N. knew that they COULD manipulate the weather --- or why else make that rule? Russia has been advertising to other nations in the European region that they could request to have rainfall, in a certain area, for a price. --- Like the old movie "The RainMaker."

Unfortunately a useful rainfall is a blessing to a desert region, but it could easily be a roaring FLOOD in a different region, so that would be using Weather as a Weapon. NOW in the news only a few weeks ago, it was mentioned that China & Russia were both using lazer beams sent into the stratosphere, possibly to impact the weather. Hmmm then suddenly we get: Arctic Vortex, extremely freezing weather, & massive snowfall, & some very unusual weather all over the USA. (Some say weather can be the "new" WMD in the world).
