November 22, 1963 is a day that will be forever etched in millions of American's minds. America watched in horror as they saw the President slumped over after being fatally wounded by a gun shot wound to the head. The images of the Presidential limousine racing off while the First Lady was trying to retrieve a piece of the slain Presidents skull are almost impossible to comprehend.

It's been fifty years since that fateful day where John F. Kennedy was assassinated and it is difficult to not think about what might have been. A young, charismatic President that truly believed in the the American dream. I just can't help but ponder the change he could have ushered in.

For those of you that were alive when JFK was assassinated--what are your memories of that day? For those of you who were not--what does today mean to you?

I was only 2 so no memories. I just watched on PBS an episode of NOVA called JFK The cold case. They looked at the crime with modern day ballistics and forensics. I thought it was very interesting and informative. I believe there was a second gunman and a conspiracy.
I think this country would have been much better if he could have finished his first and second terms.

I was in a Central American jungle, didn't know about the murder until hours later when we were pulled out and returned to our base camp, then we sat around a radio and listened to the news reports, we stayed on alert status for about a week I think, and then back to the boonies.

I would like to start by thanking Slavica Anic on LinkedIn for having initiated this! It emboldened me to finally do so too and reach into one of the collective memories etched into my consciousness. President Kennedy meant much and was warmly regarded the world over, including in India where I grew up. A war had broken out on the sub-continent in 1962, but with different antagonists than the usual ones and India was losing badly when the President ordered immediate military assistance from the United States. In addition in our family, as in many others he was deeply admired, for his ability to overcome and retain graciousness and humor under the most vicious of personal and public tests! All this, while framing the deepest empathy for the most extreme of positions that are products of the Human Condition in the most touching turns of phrases! His was the Literary touch that led to the 'Profiles In Courage'. I remember exactly where I was sitting when the news from Dallas arrived while I remember little of my own life from that period - which attests to its impact! It was an early Sunday morning in India, I was10 and although I did not understand the verb in 'Kennedy Assassinated' the headline to the news that occupied the front page news on the Times of India, reading through I knew it could not be anything good and my sleeping parents would want to know. So I went into their bedroom with the paper and made the announcement - the alacrity and intensity of their reaction told me why it was shared the world over and through the ages. It led me to join them in reading Professor Arthur Schlesinger's 1000 days and Robert Kennedy - still present on my much smaller book shelf. To finish this long comment we hear much, particularly from those who speak from the safety of academic distance, about the President. There are many responses, but the one that I like emerges from his service in the Pacific Theater. After a Destroyer ran over PT109 the young Commander held his crew together, on the island on which they were marooned, through excruciating backache - the kind that dogged him throughout his short life! How many of these writers could have emerged similarly from that crucible? Not many! Regards, Ferez Nallaseth

In college, I read most of the Warren Commission Report, & I never did believe it was written to tell the true history, but to white-wash the whole episode, so everyone could return to "business as usual." After many more years of research, I found out about the existence & motives for the JBS (John Birch Society) & I was shocked & amazed how this had been over-looked by many serious historians. The JBS began in 1958, with its leadership being 12 Republican millionaires, & its founder Robert Welch. Their expressed purpose was to "fight communism" in America, & to recruit at least a million Americans to be devout dedicated members who would attend meetings, donate money, & follow Welch's orders to do anything they were told. No dissent was allowed. It was a "front group" which held "secret meetings" & all of their activities were to be kept confidential. Some duties were to start petitions, infiltrate churches & school PTA's, to start up phone call groups to express Birch "right-wing" ideas to all Congressmen & influential parties. Eventually, they were to "takeover" the Republican Party, & then "use it" to takeover the entire United States Govt. But THIS should be a CLUE to you -- Welch, their founder, DID NOT Believe in Democracy, & wanted to destroy it. He began the John Birch Society JBS in 1958, & 55 yrs later, the US Govt is in shambles, mostly due to the GOP which is half-destroyed by TEA PARTY groups in its core. (The Tea Party is the 2nd generation of the JBS (John Birch Society) -- Fred Koch was on the Exec Council of the JBS, in the 1960's, and HIS SONS, known as the Koch Bros are founders & financiers of the Tea Party. Both groups exist just to infiltrate, sabotage & destroy our US electoral system -- since Robt Welch "did not believe in democracy" way back in 1958.
Welch studied Lenin, Marx & Hitler to find their methods to takeover a govt, & install a fascist form of govt instead (in America). They began immediately to set up a "propaganda" apparatus, getting on radio & TV as fast as possible. Often using "religious" broadcasters who already were established. By 1964, they had Barry Goldwater as their Presidential candidate, to run against JFK, & you all know how that worked out. (JFK was killed). And then again in 1968, Robt Kennedy (Atty Gen'l) was Democrat who ran for President, against Richard Nixon, - & RFK was also very coincidentally shot dead. The Birch Society saw it was easier to win elections using Bullets instead of Ballots.

Flash Forward to 2008, where the Tea Party is running in the GOP election against Obama, & all of a sudden we have all kinds of "gun" rhetoric coming out of the mouth of people like Sarah Palin, "we come unarmed this time", don't forget to "reload" --- setting "gun targets" on the maps of states where they want to get rid of Democratic candidates. Also having GOP members going out to throw stones & bricks at Dem Hdqtrs, - (that is a "repetition" of the "Kristallnacht" of Nazi Germany, where the Hitler Youth threw rocks & stones at all Jewish homes, businesses, & synagogues). That is the year we had GOP spitting on our Democrat Congressmen as they walked up to the nation's capitol to go to work. While the GOP carried insane posters depicting Obama as a Zulu guy & all kinds of defamatory images. Democratic congressmen got phone calls threatening to "kill all the children of those voting for healthcare." This should tell you exactly how CHRISTIAN these GOP Bircher Tea Bag PEOPLE ARE. If God was watching, they better buy a lot of asbestos underwear. Because I hear the Fire burns real "hot" in HELL.

Right now, this last couple of years, it is easy to see how the GOP/Bircher/TeaParty faction operates. They will do almost anything to win an election. Including Murder, making new rules about "voting" to disenfranchise millions of voters, paying billions of dollars on FALSE Ads against Democrats, gerrymandering districts, & various ways to "rig" elections, like not counting the ballots in FL, so Geo "W" Bush had to be chosen by the Supreme Court, which had been recently appointed by his Daddy (Bush #41). Yep, they all got a "lifetime" job in govt, in exchange for making his son the POTUS.

Now we are stuck with those corrupt old codgers who have made it possible for slimey corporations to donate billion$ to election campaigns, to get GOP in office much easier.

Saying "corporations are people". Yeah sure. Well, be sure to tell me the next time any corporation eats, breathes or defecates. And I
DOUBT they could find one with a BRAIN.

To pgr & L.A. Citizen: I am really sad that you guys would choose this anniversary of JFK's assassination to write such terrible things on this "Democratic" Forum. It sounds like stuff I would expect from the WORST right-wing dirt rags, & it is not only inappropriate & disrespectful, it breaks my heart to see such contemptuous LIES being perpetuated here. I spend a lot of time trying to awaken people to the TRUTH about this country & its gradual downfall due to right-wing treasonous efforts by the Birch Society & the Tea Party & several others.

Almost everything in the Chomsky article about JFK's foreign policies were totally LIES, and JFK was getting ready to pull us out of VietNam at the time he was killed. Also, it was Bush & the GOP who were doing terrorist activities in Cuba.
All of JFK's agenda was for PEACE, as he was Catholic & he knew the Christian attitude; Jesus was the Prince of Peace. JFK saved us from nuclear warfare, since he went against Pentagon insistence & would not bomb Cuba, despite all their continuous pressure. All the right-wing rhetoric about JFK is totally FALSE. They just can't stand it, because all their idols are guilty of war crimes, Watergate which almost got Nixon impeached, Reagan who sold Hawk missiles to Iran, (selling arms to an enemy nation is treason, by our legal definition), & Reagan was responsible for the explosion of one of our space shuttles & all aboard died. Also Reagan testified that certain people were Commies to the HUAC, & later admitted that none of them guilty. Many lost their jobs.
Reagan also cut off disability payts to VietNam Vets because he thought there was too much corruption in the system, so all had to be confirmed over again, costing the govt million$
& guess what? No real graft was ever found. Meanwhile a lot of our wounded soldiers either died or killed themselves due to loss of their rightful benefits. Bush (#43) faked WMD to start a major war (for 10 yrs) costing thousands of lives, & bankrupting the US economy, while stealing oil wells from Saddam Hussein, but not to worry, he just killed Hussein to cover all that up. All of it, like bombing the water & power of Iraq is a series of War Crimes. And the US economy is really in bankruptcy due to Bush, but has he ever spent even one hour under detention? NO. Neither has his brother Neil who robbed the Silverado Credit Union, or his brother Jeb who was involved in "rigging" the election of 2000. And Daddy Bush was involved with the Cuban invasion directly while in the CIA. And "W"s Grandpa Prescott Bush financed the Third Reich in Nazi Germany (I.G. Farben) that built concentration camps & Zyklon gas to kill the Jews. All 3 generations of Bush were in the "Skull & Bones" at Yale. Their Insignia was the same deaths head skull of the Nazi Party. Also, in the US today are many neo-Nazi groups that are NRA & practice in the mountains & valleys with hidden campgrounds. Google it. All are right-wing (GOP) devotees, & many are involved also in KKK & Tea Party groups. (Birds of a feather). I guess some of them hold up the Tattoo industry a great deal.

I could go on for hours, but suffice it to say, there is not a whole lot of room for Republicans to think they are without stain, & holier than thou. Their phoney religious icons are also fun to identify. **See Matthew 25: 31-46 -- Jesus will Judge the people on Judgment Day, by how well they treated their fellow man, by what good deeds they did for the homeless or the elderly, or the widowed & orphaned, by giving them food or shelter or clothing, & by taking care of their needs. And the Repubs would be going straight to hell, according to the word of God, since they refused to give people healthcare or shelters, or Food Stamps. Repubs are only selfish greedy fools, & they better get used to living in fire & brimstone, since that is where they're surely going.
I only mention it, in case some people could finally hear the truth & change their ways before it is too late. AMEN.

I hesitate to bring up the subject of Marilyn Monroe & Mary Jo Kopechne, but since 2 members have talked of it, I will jump in with the facts. Marilyn Monroe was very famous in the 50's & 60's, as an actress, -- and one of the Kennedy's sisters (Patricia) was married to "actor" Peter Lawford. So it was only natural that actors would visit the Kennedy home. This group (the Rat Pack) included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop. This group performed together often in Las Vegas. Marilyn Monroe was married to Joe DiMaggio (baseball player) & then Arthur Miller (famous playwright). She had an alcohol & drug problem for years, & one night took a fatal overdose. Her maid called ambulance to her house right afterward. Her Autopsy did not show any unusual wounds. She had dated Frank Sinatra fairly recently & also a Latino director. She was in the middle of a movie at the time she died, called "Something's Got to Give" (1962).

Mary Jo Kopechne was a teacher, a secretary, & a political campaign specialist, working for Robt Kennedy in 1964. He ran for Senate, & later in 1968, he ran for President. During a staff reunion gathering on Chappaquiddick Island in July 1969, she was leaving with Ted Kennedy, & ended up in a horrible accident, where the car missed the turn, in the total darkness, & dived off a bridge at the bottom of a hill, ending up in deep water. Mary Jo could not get out of the car, but it was impossible for Ted to see her in total darkness & being underwater. In that situation you could not speak, you could not hear, you could not see the other person, & if you didn't depart quickly, you could not breathe so you would drown.
He did not know if she got out or not, & if he kept on going down over & over, nothing would be accomplished except being drowned himself. At that time, everyone assumed if you were underwater 2-3 minutes, you were dead already.
So it would be futile to expect or believe he could save her.
There was a complete investigation, & an actual trial & a grand jury (3 different inquiries) & the verdict was that Ted Kennedy had "left the scene of an accident" & the sentence was 2 months incarceration (suspended) -- Mary Jo's family never thought it was anything except a terrible accident.

Now it would be nice, if on the 50th anniversary of a dead President's assassination, we could TRY to accept the Truth instead of blowing up all the weird theories of the Tea Party crowd (a bunch of known liars) who have dozens of crooks in their history, & just try to act like real Americans for a day -- & honor a good man (JFK) who was a real WWII hero, a good husband & father, a man of Peace, who started the US space program, & kept us out of nuclear war with Russia by his embargo of Cuba instead of nuking the island like the US (Pentagon) wanted him to do. He was really trying to end our involvement with VietNam, but our military were dead set on keeping that war going for at least another 12 yrs. It was a miracle we had JFK as President, he was well suited to be the leader during a dangerous crisis, & he will always be a true HERO to me. Rest in Peace, Jack --- & we will always think of you, & the "eternal flame" at your graveside.

    Eternal Flame,

Good posts. They were called for and appropriate.

I just thought I'd say something you might find interesting, which agrees with some of what you said. As it states in an article titled Who Killed President Kennedy, even though most Americans love him he was resented by many people in the Pentagon, the FBI and the CIA, as well as by Communists and Southern racists who hated his stance against Apartheid. And he did indeed plan to pull all of Eisenhower's military advisers out of Vietnam.

That is explained in an article that provides a kind of sane and reasonable balance between the "official" government explanation of the assassination and the very different and sometimes wild conspiracy theories that have been floating around.

For example, it concludes that the FBI and the Secret Service probably did knowingly and purposely enable or allow Lee Harvey Oswald to carry out his planned assassination, and it provides evidence and shows a video that lends credence to that conclusion.

However, it is far more reasonable than conspiracy theories that claim Oswald was not the only shooter, and that the head shot that killed Kennedy came from the front. It explains exactly how and why the three shots fired came from the rear, and from the book depository.

The article closes with these remarks:

"The answer to the question of who killed President Kennedy is that while one corrupted murderer may have pulled the trigger, he was merely a pawn who was moved by the same player or mentality that motivates all hateful, malicious, self-important, self-righteous people who are incited to kill, or approve of killing.

In the final analysis, however, it is not crucially important to determine whether or not any conspiracies were involved in the assassinations of the Kennedy brothers and King, nor is it crucially important to determine that even though it was the Communist Lee Harvey Oswald who actually killed Kennedy, he was enabled or allowed to do so by U.S. government agents who served the U.S. Military Industrial Complex that wanted (and still wants) global dominance.

Granted, it is important to determine those things. However, what is most important is to realize that the malevolent spirit and mentality that motivated and approved of the assassins was widespread, and it is still very much alive today.

It is also important to realize that regardless of who was really responsible for it, Kennedy’s assassination, like the assassinations of his brother and Dr. King, caused horrified disappointment and frustration in those who were trying to reform the U.S. political-economic system. But, it soon made them stronger and more determined, and that of course created an even stronger right-wing reaction against them from right-wing conservatives all over the nation
    ."

By the way, there is a note at the bottom of that article pointing out that it's really just one section of a larger comprehensive article titled Ignored American History, and in that article, following the section about the Kennedy assassination, it continues and discusses how those three horrible assassinations changed America and enabled the forces of greed and self-interest to do what they've done between then and now.

I only pointed out an alternate view, not what I believe, necessarily, but another view. Don't be afraid of different views as without different views it's very difficult to find the real truth.

Republicans worship Regan while most of us think he was a worthless actor. Liberals worship Kennedy but the reality is both of them have been made into bigger than life figures by their followers and supporters.

My personal feelings about Kennedy are probably a lot more truthfull and accurate than most who just believe the fable of Camelot. Kennedy wasn't a particularly good or bad president. He had many moral failings to be sure but that didn't make him a bad president either (although sharing the same girlfriend as a Mafia leader at the same time makes one wonder doesn't it). He certainly wasn't any better than Obama has been no matter what your feelings are about Obama. He was certainly better than Regan but that's not saying a whole lot. The biggest thing Kennedy did was lose his life for his country and while sad, that happens to plenty of servicemen in the military on a regular basis and their lives are or should be just as important.

History has been pretty kind to both Reagan and Kennedy, probably a lot kinder than either of them deserve. Do I dislike Kennedy - not at all, but at the same time he wasn't the god (if I can use that term) that his supporters would like us all believe either. Facts are facts and hype is hype and most of the Kennedy legacy is just that hype created by his family and supporters to enhance his short and somewhat mediocre presidency. That's reality, like it or not!

Well, I wasn't even on earth when Kennedy died. Do you honestly believe that they cared about this country??? Their fortunes were created from the fringes of crime.
That's a wonderful statement Ted gave about his mistress,,,,,,but we can't ask her. What was it that made that family so special???? Jimmy Carter was 10 x the president John F, was if you pay attention to democratic philosophy. John F was addicted to drugs and women while he was president. Everyone in prison with a heroin addiction all claim back pain as the reason......I know, it wasn't heroin, it was better then heroin.....MORPHINE

LBJ not accepting re-nomination was a far greater act then any kennedy had ever done....I'm sure Ted paid the family of his mistress handsomely.
BTW,,,,,I support working people. I'm not a democrat or republican

Say what you want about Fidel and Che,,,,,,,you can't call them cowards. They stood up,,,,,,, something our citizens can't do because it would interfere with the kardashians and Duck Dynasty.

I was in the Vietnam War scene at the end and long after JFK was assassinated. One of many opinions that floated around about JFK's death has always stayed with me. For some reason it has motive and every once and awhile the media news brings up the controversy surrounding LBJ. Yes, the Vice President at the time being possibly part of a conspiracy. I am not alone because many of us in uniform believed it had merit and apparently it has stuck with the history of the assassination. Many knew that Lady Bird, LBJ's wife, had a significant quantity of stock in Remington Arms, which supplied the M16 weapon to the military. The M16 was the weapon of most all soldiers on the ground in Vietnam. So, at the time the M16 was plagued with many issues and was continually going through redesign. To eliminate the M16 would be a disaster to Remington stock. This is the motive to not end the Vietnam War so swiftly, which Kennedy was pursuing as President. It sounds far stretched, but many of us Vietnam Veterans believe today it has motive and of course there is so much corruption at the top, it would not be hard for LBJ to be a part of a conspiracy.

An Air Force general who had a total head case against JFK, the Mafia, Cuba's Castro and others all had possible motives. However, I do not believe for one second that Lee Harvey Oswald worked this alone. He was a pawn played to capture all the attention away from those who actually conspired against JFK. I always hope that someday someone will come forward with the real junk on a conspiracy. Maybe fifty years is not long enough for reprisals to occur if someone does come forward with evidence. I'm not holding my breath for that day for new evidence, but I can hope for some justice to a great President, God Bless John F. Kennedy.
